Game 67, 2014

Dodgers at Reds, 4:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA

The Dodgers send out Hyun-Jin Ryu, who’s been spectacular on the road this season. He’s 5-0 with a 0.95 ERA away from Dodger Stadium. Overall, he’s 7-2 with a 3.08 ERA. The Reds counter with Johnny Cueto, a righty with a 5-5 W-L record and a 1.97 ERA. If you see that ERA and say “shouldn’t he be better than .500 in wins and losses?” you’d be right. Eleven of his thirteen starts this year have been quality ones. Either his bullpen has let him down or he’s gotten no decision in half of those starts.

  1. Video of Dee’s great catch last night shows something kinda scary. Dee’s so fast he got out of the way, but Puig was barreling down on him full speed.

Yasiel may yet annihilate a teammate. It even rhymes, unfortunately.

  2. Attention-grabbing video of snakes on a Puig at Jon’s insider. Dude is a natural media magnet, and I don’t mean that in a negative way. He does a lot of endearing things.

Jon said this: “Yasiel Puig went to the zoo today. Youngest Master Weisman almost went to the zoo, but ended up miniature golfing instead.

Summer is a kids’ paradise …”

I think I see what he did there. And he’s right. Coming from his deprived background and being young and enthusiastic about life, Puig is a kid in a lot of ways.

And there’s not a thing wrong with that.

  3. I have thought for a long time that Kemp might have a vision problem. That could explain both his strike out tendencies and his fielding problems. Let’s ignore the elephant in the room that the incompetence in calling balls and strikes has become… I can only imagine how frustrating that is for the players. In this age of electro-technology we could easily have a machine that would make a perfect call on every pitch.

    • As I recall he wears contacts (so some attempt to correct any vision problem). Actually, I remember in 2008, when he had a problem with them and had to sit out a game against the ‘Stros. Repko started in his place and Torre decided to have him fresh from the farm lead off with Oswalt pitching. Jason received a golden sombrero and was on his way to a platinum, but on an apparent third strike the pitcher was called for a balk. Repko flew out on the next pitch.

  4. just looked at some vision of the game today:
    1) Kemp had a few choice words to say from the dugout
    2) The Reds uni today made the Padres version look good

  5. These guys need to get on a “win six, lose two, win four, lose one” kind of roll, and so far they’ve shown no sign they can do that. There are 95 games left. Plenty of time, but they have to get started.

  6. Once again with a chance to win four in a row . . . and the offense is MIA . . . ineffective . . . impotent . . . choose your adjective, they are frustrating!

    • Cueto is one of the best, 12 Ks and 3 H with no BB over 6 IP. I agree about the maddening inconsistency of the offense, but sometimes you just have to tip your hat to the other team’s pitcher.

Seems like the offense is feast or famine.

      • True, sometimes no matter what you do, the other pitcher is just going to beat you

    • This was less frustrating for me, because Cueto was absolutely lights out. I doubt many teams could have hit him. We had a small window of opportunity in the 7th, but Broxton and Chapman were also phenomenal. Not much to do…

    • On the road trip they are averaging 4.8 runs per game and have score 4 or more in 5 of 6 including this game (doesn’t really fit a feast or famine scenario), where they faced three of the best pitchers in the game right now. Their two losses on the road trip both involve the pitching giving up 5 runs.

  7. Gameday says Chapman’s 5th pitch to SVS was 102. But was a mph or so when you’re consistently triple digits….

  8. Turner battled Broxton over 9 pitches and walked. Dee fought for 10 and lined out. Chone was outta there in 2, grounding out to end the inning.

There may or may not be an object lesson in there somewhere.

  9. Good AB by Turner. He continues to be a pleasant surprise. The team needs more of his kind of surprise and less of some other kinds it has run into this season.

Last night he drove in a run and for the night was 2-for-4 with a run scored. He has 4 straight multi-hit games, has driven in 12 runs in his last 14 starts and has scored at least one run in 11 of his last 14 starts.

    • Agreed. He has done a good job as a utlityman. But we lost Punto, Schumaker and Hariston and, despite the addition of Turner, our bench is weaker than in 2013.

      • Is it really? I didn’t have high hopes coming in, but Turner and Figgins seem to be doing a good job, and we still have SVS. They didn’t do to badly last year, but they were used too much and their limitations showed. Hope we don’t have a repeat this year.

        • I feel that last year’s bench gave us more versatility. I agree that it was overused, demonstrating their limitations. I like Turner a lot, but I am not too high on Figgins. Another downside to this year’s roster compared to 2013 is the lack of hitting from the catching position. Granted that Ellis has battled injuries, but his replacements are simply not doing an adequate job at the plate.

  10. Looks like once again we were just teased for a few games and the offense hasn’t decided to stay.

  11. He is likely done for the night. Chapman 2 innings away and middle relief not the Red’s forte (look who’s talking!)

  12. We got to him last time in the 7th, when he was over 100 pitches. He is now at 90.

    • I’m guessing that because he struck out looking, it was for arguing the strike 3 call (he has done that a bit before)
