Game 13, 2014

Dodgers at Diamondbacks, 1:10 PM PST, TV: SPNLA.

Haren v. Cahill. On paper this shouldn’t be a contest. Haren is 1-0 with a 0.75 ERA in 12 innings over two starts. Cahill is 0-3 with a 7.90 ERA in 22 1/3 innings over three starts. “But that’s why they play the games,” says the aphorism.

Lineup:

I think this is the first time Ethier has started in left field this season.

  1. Old friendship renewed, apparently–

From MLBTR: “The Dodgers have signed lefty Erick Threets, who was pitching for the independent Long Island Ducks”

Didn’t he have a cup of coffee with the Dodgers or elsewhere in the past? Or was he just in the minors? Guess there’s always interest in a 6’5″ lefty power pitcher, which he is, if memory serves.

    • From Wikipedia: “He signed a minor league contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers after the 2008 season and was assigned to the AAA Albuquerque Isotopes.” Then, in 2012: “He signed with the Dodgers on July 17 and was assigned to the AAA
Isotopes, where he was 2-2 with a 5.19 ERA in 17.1 innings (18 games).”

  2. Didn’t see the game, but Jansen’s new added velocity doesn’t seem to have made his cutter any more hittable. Best I can tell, 10 of his 13 pitches yesterday were 95 or faster–2 @ 99, 2@ 98, 1 @ 97, 3 @ 96, 2 @ 95. All cutters.

Trumbo and Pollock didn’t seem to think it was more hittable. Both K’d swinging on the 98 and 99 variety.

Those speeds from Gameday. A couple places said one of his cutters hit 100, the Trumbo K.

    • He hasn’t thrown like that in a couple of years, as he seemed to be relying on control and his cutter.

  3. You stats gurus might know (or be able to find out easily), when was the last time a pitcher got an out in an inning without throwing any pitches

    • That’s as effective as the Blue offense today — 8 runs off of 7 hits. I remember that game several years ago when they had 11 hits and only 1 run!

    • Not sure, but I recall a game where the pitcher got all of his outs through pickoffs. Tippy Martinez of the O’s did it when the opposing team thought it would take advantage of having the third string catcher, Lenn Sakata, in the game and took big leads of first anticipating stealing second. August 24, 1983.

      • Lenny wasn’t even close to being a catcher, really. He was a utility infielder, but Weaver overmanaged and used up Dempsey and whoever the 2nd string catcher was.

Sakata is still active, managing in the minors for somebody.

        • Overmanaged? Ayala pitch hitting for Nolan in the 9th singled in a run as part of a rally that tied the game, which the O’s went on to win in xtras, with Lenn supplying a 3-run dinger in the 10th.

          • Well, okay, the end justified the means in that case, but pinch-hitting for your second catcher after the first one’s already gone leaving you with no catcher at all would ordinarily be thought of as shooting yourself in the foot.

          • Sure, but if they don’t score in the bottom of the 9th there is no top of the 9th. BTW, who is the Dodgers 3rd stringer. It was Kemp a few years ago, and Skippy last year. Hopefully not Kenley.

  4. Gordon’s fourth steal just came up on gameday, that was a great heads up steal

      • You guys need to stay away with the Dodgers batting, but be there when the “bad guys” are up. 🙂

        • Yeah, well. You know what’s worse? There’s a baseball game on the radio out here right now, but it’s the Giants – Rockies. While shampooing I heard the Giants come from behind to take a 3 – 1 lead in the 5th.

          • Okay — so you have to leave, but don’t shampoo . . . or at least not when SF is playing. . . . Because we all know that the outcome is determined by what we’re doing, right?

  5. Scary thought — the bullpen in charge of the majority of the game.
    But tomorrow IS an off-day.

  6. A-gon, again!
I know we need to be careful what we ask for . . . but can the Dodgers only play AZ?

  7. Just up on game day, Kemp sure crushed it (Vin got very excited – “hammered, I mean hammered”)

  8. Matchups to be considered I know, but I like this lineup and batting order the best

  9. Cahill’s not a bad pitcher, but he’s pitched badly so far. We’ll see if he can keep it up. Haren’s been good, but he’s not what he once was.
