In case anyone wondered, when the needle gets a lot of fuzz on it, records still skip. This just happened to me with Neil Young’s After the Gold Rush. Fortunately, it was on side two. (Thanks to kd for reminding me of this album.)

In other musical notes, I have discovered that my third copy of Airplane’s Worst of… is still in reasonably good shape.

I’m now thinking that when I get rich I’ll just replace the turntable and get the Sansui 5500 receiver fixed, rather than trash the stuff. The Pioneer speakers (88s, as I recall; the big 80-watters) still work just fine with this gadget. I was able to blow out a lot of the New Year’s Eve firecracker racket with a History of Eric Clapton, which Amazon doesn’t recognize. It’s a nice compilation, from his early work with the Yardbirds to Derek and the Dominos to Delaney & Bonnie.

  1. I loved the Yardbirds…especially Keith…
Eric Clapton has a great history. Someone once said he was the greatest guitar man in history.
But now people say that about Keith Richards, BB King, and Elvis (no, not Elvis silly..!)

  2. at least you still have your old albums, and a turntable. i’m not sure i even know anyone with a turntable anymore, which is kinda sad. a lot of things didn’t get transferred over, so there are things that are just … lost forever. .sigh.

  3. kd, I spent several hours last night cataloging all the albums; my rough guess of 300 is a little low. It’s probably more like 335, and I’ll be damned if I’m gonna replace ’em all with CDs, even if I could. Expect a master list one of these days, just for fun.

  4. Damn, I’m flashing back to the last time I got fuzz on the needle and missing the 90s…. You realize many people have no clue what this means? Needle fuzz, that is? *sigh*

  5. You realize that you live in the same neighborhood as the best used record store in Hawaii? It went away for a bit (moved, of all places, to Massachusetts) then came back again. I haven’t been there recently, but much of my 600+ record collection came from Jelly’s used bins. Mayhap your album collection may swell just a bit…

  6. EC rules. My brother-in-law has seen him live about ten times. I’ve never been invited along, and just haven’t had that much cash to blow on one night. I keep saying “the next time through…” “Bell-bottom Blues” is about the most perfect song ever. Sigh.

  7. Ted Nugent said that Eric Clapton is a “really good guitar player….ten years ago.” Yeah, Terrible Ted.
You might be the last person alive with those massive speakers.
