It astonishes me that a jury could ignore the video evidence that the occupiers of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge carried guns and blocked federal employees from doing their jobs, but that’s what one did yesterday. I can only conclude that the jurors sympathized with the cause those two-bit “sovereign citizens” espouse and dislike the federal government.
The juxtaposition of the acquittal of a bunch of white men in Oregon and the arrest of 141 protesters against the construction of a pipeline in North Dakota by heavily-militarized police should probably not be lost on anyone. Most of the arrested protesters were Native American. Are there two standards of justice in this country? It’s hard to disagree.
