The Giants’ LHP Kyle Harrison (1-1, 5.18 ERA) makes his sixth career MLB appearance, all of them this year. He’ll face the Dodgers’ RHP Emmet Sheehan (3-1, 5.44 ERA), who’s making his 12th career big league appearance, also all this season.

Tonight will be the major league debut of the Giants’ hot prospect Tyler Fitzgerald. The Giants’ Twitter feed has been documenting every step he’s taken today, from arrival at the stadium to going up the dugout steps.

  • 1934 “If I’da known he was gonna throw one, I’da thrown one, too.” – Dizzy Dean, after his brother threw a no-hitter in the nightcap of a double-header. In the second game of a doubleheader at Ebbets Field, 22 year-old Cardinal hurler Paul Dean, called Daffy by his teammates, becomes the fifth rookie to throw a no-hitter, beating the Dodgers, 3-0. His brother Dizzy held Brooklyn hitless until the eighth inning in the opener, settling for a two-hitter in the team’s 13-0 blanking of the Bums.
  • 1952 In front of the second largest crowd this season, with many of the 8,822 fans rooting for the Dodgers, the Braves play their final home game in Boston. Brooklyn catcher Roy Campanella hits the last home run at Braves Field in an 8-2 victory over the Milwaukee-bound club.
  • 1963 When first base umpire Doug Harvey tosses skipper Danny Murtaugh and coach Frank Oceak, Gene Baker takes over the club’s reins in the final two innings, becoming the first black to manage a major league team. The former Kansas City Monarchs, Chicago Cubs, and Pirates infielder’s historic moment is spoiled when Willie Davis hits a three-run walk-off home run, giving the Dodgers a 5-3 victory over the Bucs in the Chavez Ravine contest.
  • 1969 In a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the tenth inning at Candlestick Park, LA’s Pete Mikkelsen quickly retires the first two Giants batters, but then is ordered to intentionally walk Willie McCovey, who is 4-for-4 in the game. The Dodger reliever proceeds to issue free passes to the next two hitters unintentionally, loading the bases, and then loses the game when shortstop Maury Wills boots pinch-hitter Jim Davenport’s ground ball.

LHP Clayton Kershaw (5-2, 2.53 ERA) goes for the Dodgers and LHP Wade Miley (3-1, 2.31 ERA) goes for the Brewers.

  • 1953 With a double and home run, Roy Campanella drives in all the runs in the Dodgers’ 5-0 victory over the Phillies at Ebbets Field. Campy’s total of 40+ RBIs in the first 30 games will not be matched until Tino Martinez accomplishes the feat in 1997 with the Yankees.
  • 1955 Dodger right-hander Don Newcombe faces only 27 batters when he one-hits Chicago at Wrigley Field, 3-0. Gene Baker, who will be thrown out trying to steal second base, ruins Newk’s bid for perfection, with a fourth-inning single.

Other historical notes: on this day in 1909 Fred Toney completes the longest no-hitter in organized baseball history, a 1-0 victory over the Lexington Colts of the Blue Grass League. As word spread around town about the Class D Winchester Hustlers right-hander’s performance on the mound, fans continued to stream into the ballpark before the lone run of the contest scored on a squeeze play in the bottom of the 17th. And if you thought the Phillies’ Ben Chapman was bigoted only toward African-Americans, think again. On this date in 1934 Chapman, who will lead the protest against Jackie Robinson in 1947, harasses a Jewish fan during a Yankees’ 13-3 victory of the White Sox at the Bronx ballpark. The New York left fielder shouts disparaging epithets and taunts the team’s supporter with Nazi salutes.

RHP Tony Gonsolin (2-0, 1.64 ERA) faces RHP Bryse Wilson (0-1, 3.79 ERA). Gonsolin’s only gone past five innings once so far this season; in only one has he given up more than one run. This will be Wilson’s fourth start, but his last two appearances have been in relief. He’s given up no fewer than two runs in his starts. He’s gone no more than 4 1/3 innings in any of his five outings.

The Nationals send RHP Aníbal Sánchez (0-5, 5.15 ERA) out to face the Dodgers’ RHP Kenta Maeda (3-2, 4.66 ERA) in the middle second game of this three-game four-game series. Sánchez has lost four straight starts and walked at least four in four of his six starts this year. Maeda has done just a little better; he’s walked at least two in four of his seven starts.
