Dodgers at Phillies, 4:05 PM PDT, TV: NBCSP, SPNLA
RHP Max Scherzer (9-4, 2.75 ERA) pitches for the Dodgers and RHP Aaron Nola (7-6, 4.49 ERA) does the same for the Phillies.
This date in Dodgers’ history:
- 1979 Dodger hurler Don Sutton sets a franchise record with his 50th shutout, blanking San Francisco at Candlestick Park, 9-0. The 34 year-old right-hander had previously shared the mark with Don Drysdale. (Ed. note: 50! Through his twelfth year Clayton Kershaw had a career total of 15!)
- 1995 The first forfeit in the majors in sixteen years occurs when the fans for the third time during the night throw promotional souvenir baseballs onto the Dodger Stadium field. At the time of the decision to halt the game, Los Angeles is trailing the Cardinals, 2-1 with one out in the bottom of the ninth.
August 10 is a good day for pitchers: in 1971 at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park, Juan Marichal records his 50th career shutout as the Giants blank the Expos, 1-0. The Dominican hurler’s ninth inning double helps to build the winning run.

Smooooth!
Snakes gave it their best, but gnats. Always. Win. When. We. Win.
Gnats up by one run now. Phooey. Posey and Crawford strike again.
At Software Stadium, the Gnats have blown a five-run. Now 5-5 after 5-1/2. The big inning started with a double by pitcher Zac Gallen.
In-game quiz: Name the other Philly with the last name of Herrera and what position did he play? Hint: second half of the 20th century, (No internet research is allowed).
Was the fellow Cuban?
Yes, he was.
Ramon Herrera, but didn’t know that he played with the Athletics.
It wasn’t Ramon Herrera. I should have been more precise. The player I am referring to played for the Phillies.
No idea.
It was Pancho Herrera, who mostly played first base for the Phillies: 1958, 1960-1961. The main reason I remember him is that I still have his 1959 Topps baseball card. He was second in the NL Rookie of the Year voting in 1960 behind Frank Howard. Herrera also played second and third.
That’s not the 19th century.
I corrected that to 20th century about a half-hour ago. Take a look.
Dang, should have refreshed, though I don’t recall Pancho in any event.
I hadn’t realized that he was second to Howard in the Rookie of the Year voting.
Looking him up, he also got MVP votes! Just the sort of fellow you might remember, as he led the league in Ks. Out of the majors by 1962, but hung around in the minors until 1969!
He even came back to play briefly in the Mexican League in 1974. Here is a fine profile of Herrera on the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) site: https://sabr.org/bioproj/person/pancho-herrera/ (Something to read during a long rain delay).
Great read!
I look at the name of the Philly who just struck out, and I recall what I thought when the Dodgers brought in a new manager for the 2008 season: “Torre Yes!”
Well, he was able to ruin Broxton.
We did reach the NLCS in the first two of his three seasons as skipper.
Torre was better than McCourt, but that’s about as faint as praise can be.
Getting us to the NLCS twice in his three years merits more praise than that.
Since the advent of the NLCS in 1969, only three Dodger managers reached the NLCS in their first two season: Lasorda, Torre and Roberts.
Well, he was able to ruin Broxton.
Did suggest a commitment to winning and raised the profile of the team. Hard to imagine that Torre would have signed up, if McCourt hadn’t made some promises to provide resources for improving the team.
Torre was a retread whose day was past.
Not my point, but yes he did seem wedded to a management style and strategy approach that were outdated.
In fairness, Mattingly was worse.
Your definition of “fairness” is intriguing.
With JT and Mookie (possible IL) out, and Kelly to the IL, this is a war of attrition.
Dodgers by the month:
April, 16-11, .593
May, 16-11, .593 (same as April)
June, 17-9, .654
July, 14-12, .538
August, 4-2, .667
TOTAL, 67-45, .598
Most games over .500 (23), at 58-35
Their road record (when I was on it) was 6-4. Back in the saddle (couch) now. Indeed, the other Dodger fanatic in the neighborhood almost talked us into going up to Philly to see Max pitch tonight!
Big T-storms here in DC, but weather up in Philly should be good.
So much for my forecast.
While the Giants are at home for six games this week vs. the Diamondbacks and the Rockies, the Dodgers are on the road for six games vs. the Phillies and the Mets. Tough sledding?
I predict we will do well.
We are slated to get two starts from Scherzer and from Price and one each from Urias and Buehler. The best pitchers slated to go against us are the Phillies’ Nola (tonight) and Gibson (Wednesday night).
Fielding error, no less.
sigh
See if the Snakes can keep the Gnats from scoring in the bottom of the 9th.
Tied!
AZ down 7-6. Bases loaded, 1 out.
McGee really struggling.
In theory I like McGee but not with him being on his current team.
And now to root for some AZ snakes.
Bases loaded, no outs. AZ batting in top of 9th.
One out.
Now 1 out.
Woo-HOO!!!!!!!
Even better futuring!
I really wanted this one!
It was clutch!
Dodgers win!
One more, Greene.
Good futuring there!
Greene has an over 14 ERA. Gulp.
Tiny sample size.
How small?
only 1-2/3 innings.
How nice would a DP be right here?
Very very nice.
There goes that.
Not Belt, Crawford.
5 is so much better than 4.
Can’t be tied with one swing.
Exactly.
Maximum!
Max!!!!! Bomb!!!!!
Boy, was it!
Nice!
Good futuring?
Yes indeed!
If you gotta face Harper in the eighth, it’s best with a four-run lead, two out, and the bases empty.
But we’d better get Realmuto.
Albert was wrong.
As was Trea.
That one was more debatable.
I’d like to turn this into a laugher.
Yes please.
Love Brusdal’s passion.
Wonder if he will bat?
Nope
Lots of K’s.
I’d still be fine if this one ended an inning or two early to save the pen some work. And to save any late game drama too.
I expect we can all agree on that.
Seager kills the drama.
One of the crowd mikes in picking up a lot of chatting.
Bruilh throws strikes and takes balls.
Is he one of the pitchers called up from OKC recently?
Yes, but he’s risen quickly through the system.
Must be a thrill for him to be out there on the bases.
Jet lag starting to hit me, but will stay up for Trea.
Dog (walk) lag is hitting me. I returned with the expectation I’d watch a PBS mystery and fall asleep.
Well, that was a memorable at bat.
Solid pitching there.
When’s that rain coming?
My weather app says it’s raining now, will stop in 53 minutes.
Last time Knebel pitched they allowed sticky stuff, no?
Yes.
Big test with Harper.
He passed that one.
No problem griping the fastball, thank goodness.
Thank Dog!
AJ gets it done!
He’s a https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-J03yCE15rg
Hey! AJ!
I’m liking what I see of Matt Moore. Too bad he’s gnot a Gnat any Moore.
Doubles Seager!
Cycle alert.
TT is fast.
Trea was so slick with that slide.
Haha! So true. Pops back up like no big deal.
Looked like he slide by the plate and touched it with his hand going by.
Even his slides are fast. So he had to swipe the plate on the way past it.
Trea with the wheels!
Seager welcomes the return of the festivities…Game is now official.
There’s the 3 outs.
Now for the waterworks?
Forecast I last saw says 100% chance during the eleventh hour.
So a 30 min top of the 6th followed by rain. Works for me.
How about some fireworks!?
Vesia pitches like he has somewhere else to be
Back up at the plate maybe – looking to hack.
3 outs and I hope the skies open again for the night.
Is there more rain in the forecast this evening?
I am the wrong guy to ask.
Ha!
Belli’s bat back? Brilliant.
It’s like a west coast start time – but with the added bonus of the game being half over.
Seager!
Seager looking great!
Restart scheduled for 10pm local time.
Tarp off. 0-2 with my forecasts.
Oops, that was just to throw water off. Tarp back on.
I’m not sure if this is better or worse.
Neal Conan (NPR’s TOTN host and gentleman macadamia nut farmer) passed away of cancer today, according to Ken Rudin of NPR at Facebook.
Your (sorta) neighbor?
Big Island neighbor.
“Talk of the Nation” was one of my favorites.
It was excellent. Between Ray Suarez and Neal, it had wonderful hosts.
Looking at most recent forecast, doubt that this one starts again tonight.
Tomorrow looks more promising,
That’s good news.
Unfortunately, this wastes a Scherzer start at a time when the rotation is thin.
Yes. I was wrong in the probable pitchers for this week — from the fantasypros site — that I posted earlier. It should have said: Scherzer today, Price Wednesday, Urias Thursday, Buehler Friday, TBD Saturday and Scherzer Sunday. I wonder if they would move Scherzer up to Saturday on three days of rest considering his short outing today. However, that would still leave us with a TBD on Sunday.
Question: Under the new rules, if the game is called at this point, does it pick up at the same juncture on another date? In the old days, if a game wasn’t official, all records were erased.
Yes, as I understand it picks up where it left off.
Thanks. I wasn’t sure.
I guess then it would be resumed a few hours prior to tomorrow’s scheduled game. I expect that the Dodgers would call up a pitcher from the minors.
Rain delay? Sheesh, send us some of that wet stuff.
If these are anything that we got a few hours ago here in DC, they will be heavy and last for awhile.
There’s a chance of thunderstorms in the Bay Area, but they could be (potentially disastrous) dry ones. High fire danger here.
Nola needs to remember that he isn’t that good this year.
The Dodgers’ first nine outs: seven Ks and a GIDP. Ouch.
Old friend Torreyes is making Max work.
Harper made a fine play to hold Seager to a single, making the DP possible.
Starting in 2015, his first full season with the Red Sox, and continuing through 2019, his last year with Boston, Betts never played in fewer than 136 games. He will fall short of that total this year.
¡Tienes que quedar en la base! ¡Segura!
That’s a good way to keep the pitch count down.
Willie boy!
That snaps the string of four games in which the Dodgers had scored in the first inning.

Yuck, Nola dealing tonight.
Starting out, he is taking his name seriously: “No L.A.”
