Dodgers at Phillies, 4:05 PM PDT, TV: ESPN (out-of-market only), NBCSP, SPNLA
LHP David Price (4-1, 3.53 ERA) goes for the Dodgers and RHP Kyle Gibson (8-3, 2.79 ERA) is his counterpart from the Phillies.
The Dodgers activated RHP Edwin Uceta from the injured list and placed OF Mookie Betts on the injured list with a right hip inflammation, retroactive 8/8.

This day in Dodgers’ history:
- 1940 Bees hurler Nick Strincevich completes an unusual 1-1 unassisted twin killing when he doubles up Joe Vosmik, the runner trying to score on attempted squeeze play signaled by Dodger skipper Leo Durocher. The Boston southpaw catches Vito Tamulis’ bunt in the air and continues running until he steps on third base, completing the double play to end the top of the seventh inning in the team’s 3-0 loss to Brooklyn at Braves Field.
- 1946 Sweeping a doubleheader, the Phillies end the Dodgers’ 18-game winning streak, a major league record, in Philadelphia. The Dodgers hadn’t lost in the City of Brotherly Love since May 5, 1945.
- 1950 Vern Bickford, throwing just 97 pitches, no-hits the Dodgers at Braves’ Field, 7-0. The 29 year-old right-hander hurls the first hitless game for Boston since Jim Tobin accomplished the feat, also against Brooklyn, on April 27, 1944.
- 1951 WCBS-TV televises the first baseball game broadcast in color, a Braves’ 8-1 victory over the hometown Dodgers in the first game of a twin bill at Ebbets Field. Brooklyn’s announcers Red Barber and Connie Desmond provide the play-by-play commentary.
- 1969 Don Drysdale announces his retirement. The last Dodger to have played in Brooklyn, Drysdale will be elected to the Hall of Fame in 1984.
- 2015 The Blue Jays, Rays, Marlins, Mets, Indians, Cubs, Royals, White Sox, Twins, Cardinals, Diamondbacks, Mariners, Padres, Dodgers, and Giants all win, making it the first time in the live ball era that every contest is won by the home team in a full slate of games. The unique occurrence became a reality when the two last games to finish end in extra innings, with the host clubs enjoying a walk-off victory.
- 2020 For the first time in over a century, games are played at three different New York major league ballparks when the Toronto Blue Jays face the Marlins at Buffalo’s Sahlen Field, joining contests taking place at Shea Stadium and Yankee Stadium. The last time this happened in the Empire State occurred on September 8, 1915, with the Polo Grounds (Yankees), Ebbets Field (Dodgers), and Federal League Park (Buffalo Blues) hosting big-league teams.

Was listening to the dispirited Phillies broadcasters on SiriusXM. They said that Bellinger fouled off 19 pitches today and that Joe Girardi calls Trea Turner the best under-the-radar player in baseball.
Trea under played that last hit.
I didn’t see it. What occurred?
He booted a routine grounder.
Got it.
Weather looking good in Philly tomorrow. Some chance of rain in NYC on Saturday.
What a pitch for strike 3!
3 k’s on 12 pitches!
Double our pleasure! 3-0!
DP! DP! Waddya say?
Thanks!

Meanwhile, the Giants continue to show no interest in losing. They are up 5-2 over the Diamondbacks in the 6th inning. This is gnoteworthy, gno?
I continue to have confidence that they’ll turn it around.
Harold Stassen never gave up either.
I had to look him up. I was expecting a pitcher.
Best case scenario for the Gnats is 1993. In that context, Fangraphs agrees with me. https://www.fangraphs.com/depthcharts.aspx?position=Standings
Snakes have had their chances. Two on and no or one out for three innings but just can’t seem to score.
7-2.
Bullpen game for us (again) tomorrow? It’s a 10:05 a.m. start on the West Coast, but on the West Coast of Hawaii that means 7:05 a.m. for Link.
In Hawai’i, he’s actually in the Midwest.
Ha!

Dodgers win!
Woo-HOO!!!
Ballgame!!
Uncle Albert! He hammered that!
That is one very long single. Lol
Do the Dodgers have any desire to re-sign Albert next year? On a muuuuch smaller contract than his last one?
Good question. It may depend whether he wants another ring.
Ha!
I would.
Veteran presence.
He’s been a valuable bench piece and a savvy signing, but he does have his limitations.
How much would you pay?
Wondering what he is expected to do under his contract with the Angles?
AJ beats the throw!
He is learning from Trea!
Does that Quack proof the game?
That OPS is rising fast.
What was the launch angle on that sucker?!
Straight up?
Lol. 180!
179°.
Belli bustin’ out.
Cody redux!
Classic Belli. 1 HR. 3K’s.
Make it 2HRs!!!
Cody is back?!?!?!
Cody!!!!!!!!
Gnats up 5-2. Grrr.
They blew a lead yesterday, and they can do it again. They also have rotation issues, having just put Cueto on the IL.
They’re not playing as well as they have been in the past, but the Snakes can’t win for losing.
I still have confidence in them.
Blew a couple of leads but still kept on winning. No stopping them right now.
No word yet on who starts for the Dodgers tomorrow? Is Mitch White the leading candidate?
I would guess White, whose last outing was pretty good.
Have they called him up? Looks like we have Quack, Uceta, Vesia, and Greene available.
Kenley’s still around.
Talking about opener for tomorrow. Not the closer.
He is expected to do the bulk of the innings, though he may not start.
Turner clearly does not like to walk. He fouled off
Ball four at least twice.
Too bad. Because with his wheels a walk is not the worst thing in the world.
I know. I love having his speed on base.
Rather pedestrian walk rate for his career. Half of Muncy’s rate, for example.
So to speak…
Muncy’s walk rate is high, though.
League average is 7.7% and Trea clocks in at around that for his career. Not what one might expect from such a good hitter who often is called upon to bat lead off.
Still has a pretty good OBP, though.
At the lower end for a leadoff guy.
Pedestrian!
That was crazy. Camera man had a great reaction to the flying bat.
Diggin’ the Hammer glasses. Just need some white tape on the bridge.
Imagine him pitching to Henry Aaron…
McKinney watches a lot of strikes go by.
It’s been a long process, but Brewster has finally gotten his ERA below 4.
Graterol does the job.
Brusdar dealing!
4 outs on 19 pitches is nice from Graterol.
5 on 24 pitches.
6 on 26 pitches. Very nice!
so we are contented with a 4 run lead then?
Not really. But much better than 2.
I mean not having a Pinch hitter bat
I wondered that myself. Kinda gave up on that inning.
Saving the pen, as Brewster hadn’t thrown many pitches.
Gotcha. An puzzling move by Doc. Perhaps saving arms for tomorrows bullpen game.
With pen game tomorrow, probably figured that getting another inning from Brusdar tonight was the way to go. Was hit a bit the last two times he went back-to-back.
Looking forward to seeing Brusdar swing.
Wonder what his batting celebration is like?
Hilarious. Leg kick!
Pujols gave him a big smile coming back to the dugout!
He’s very likable.
Pujols? Graterol?
Let’s just say both!
Both indeed.
First career at bat, but no opportunity to unveil it.
Not disappointed.
At least he got wood on it.
AJ! Keeps the line moving.
Couple of old Snakes dueling.
C’mon Cody. Open a can on this guy.
Good battle but not good result.
Fan favorite around here, Bradley.
The Okie from Muskogee.
A couple of gifts. Thank you Phillies

Avoided more runs after a Trea mistake.
Unintentional intentional walk?
Not a bad choice.
Turns out a good one!
Looks that way.
That was a dumb AB.
Who is their emergency catcher?
Did avoid the DP, so Harper at bat.
True.
The Bickford Files. Episode 35. A Philadelphia Story.
Dang Segura is a tough out.
Okay Bickford, do your thing.
More rain in the forecast for Philly.
Gotta get through the fifth (with a lead, and that would also help the pen).
Gulp.
Quite a catch by McCutcheon.
He doesn’t seem to know he’s washed up.
I’ve always liked him as a player.
Turner is going to be wanting revenge.
Belli caught it!!!! Fake!
Outstanding.
Still an elite CF.
Nice play.
Rats!! Error really cost us.
Technically not an error.
Yes but…
But realistically an error.
A mistake, but not an error.
Mistake and error are synonyms. It was a freaking error.
In baseball, they are not synonyms.
Yea, right. So why do they give you an error in baseball when you make a mistake? I believe you are mistaken. Or are you in error. Oh wait. They are the same thing.
Check the box score.
Although not a statistical error, it is in reality, an error.
Seeing eye single but man!
Trea Turner play may be costly.
Ouch!
Happens so many times. Momentum changer.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iVFRgoQe86U
So TTurner is mortal.
Trea Turner high throw. Still getting his Dodgers legs at second.
Thanks to Harper for a one-pitch AB!
What’s not to like about David Price?
That smile is Price-less!
Holy Cow!! Way to go David.
Price!!!!!
Price is such a gamer.
That should boost his confidence!
Tio Albert hug.
BELLI!!!
Cody! My goodness. Looking good.
Now that’s an AB! Alex Cora redux!
Ka-Boom!!
Bellinger’s having better ABs even when he fails to get a hit.
Ump squeezing Price a little.
Anti-inflationary.
It’s the Third District.
Uh oh. Single by their pitcher…
I would have tried for two as well.
Yep. Me too. It was worth the risk.
Bad luck on a great hit by Smith but misread on the bases.
Cutch played it perfect off the wall.
Good bounce off the wall (and good throw), but likely committed at that point.

Ringo’s best drumming was on that cut.
Really tremendous on the skins.
Reminds me of Charlie Watts on “Get Of of My Cloud”.

Good stuff.
Here we go again…
That explains why I saw a Dodger special on Kershaw when I turned on SPNLA.
What happened to Realmuto?
Took a couple hard fouls off the mask. I’m guessing concussion protocol.
Got it.
Fine play by Seager.
Such a strong throw.
He’s actually looking like a shortstop. Maybe the arrival of Trea has motivated him.
He has normally shown a strong arm, range is what is questionable, particularly compared to Trea (most SS would suffer in such a comparison).
The reference above in the notes to Drysdale is correct. However, Jim Gilliam, who broke in with Brooklyn in 1953 (he was rookie of the year) and played with the Dodgers through 1966, remained with the club as a coach. He died the day after the Dodgers won the pennant in 1978. Maury Wills often credited Gilliam’s taking so many pitches with Wills on first that it greatly contributed to his stolen base totals.
Gilliam was an excellent infielder and a good hitter. I remember him.
AJ in his last 162 games (regular season): .292 AVG, .545 SLG, .884 OPS with 35 dingers and 92 ribbies.
If you exclude his horrible first half when they first signed him (and his playoff performance) he has provided the Dodgers with OPS+ 135 over 743 PA, which is better than his best year with the Snakes.
I was skeptical of him, but have come around.
Those guys have gotta talk!
What happened?
Turner and Muncy collided on a foul pop. Price eventually got the batter, but it meant more pitches.
Well, at least we forced Philadelphia’s starter to throw 25 pitches in that inning, meaning we are closer to seeing its bullpen. The Phillies’ bullpen has a 4.55 ERA and has allowed 64 home runs. The Dodgers’ bullpen ERA is 3.55 and has allowed 42 homers.
He’s a reliever. They’re holding back their starter because of weather concerns. 60 percent chance of rain later, with severe thunderstorm warning.
Thanks.
CT is due to hit one out.
At the Litterbox this afternoon, the Fish pummeled the Pads 7-0. SD had only four hits.
The Marlins just blanked the Padres, 7-0.
Bellinger is inching his way up the batting order. He has hit in eight consecutive games, going 8-for-25 in that span and raising his batting average from .156 to .177.
Mookie to the IL. Earliest return date is August 18th. Getting more tests done. I hope he is not done for the season.
If he is done for the season that would be a big blow. Perhaps the Dodgers should sit him through the end of the month in the hopes that he returns strong in September.
MLB network calling us “The New Look Dodgers” in the hype for their Saturday televised game.
I guess TTurner has given us a different approach.
Pretty intimidating line up, even w Mookie gone and JT out.
Trea Turner is a bolt of energy.
I believe that they have only had the full projected lineup for the season in 4 games so far.
