Cardinals at Dodgers, 7:10 PM PDT, TV: Bally Sports Midwest, SPNLA
RHP John Gant (4-3, 1.81 ERA) pitches for the Cardinals while LHP David Price (1-0, 3.31 ERA) goes for the Dodgers.
Today in Dodgers’ history:
- 1955 Duke Snider blasts three home runs in the Dodgers’ 11-8 win over Milwaukee. Jackie Robinson, Pee Wee Reese, and Roy Campanella also go deep in the Ebbets Field’s contest, helping Brooklyn set a franchise record with six home runs.
- 1962 In the nightcap of a twin bill at Shibe Park, Don Drysdale beats the Phillies for the 13th consecutive time, continuing a streak which started in 1958. The Dodger right-hander, however, will drop his next seven decisions against Philadelphia after today’s victory.
- 1997 When Wilton Guerrero scurries to pick up pieces of his shattered bat after grounding out to start the game, home plate ump Steve Ripley becomes suspicious and discovers that the rookie used an altered bat. The Dodgers second baseman is immediately ejected from the game by crew chief Bruce Froemming, and the 21 year-old infielder will also receive an eight-day suspension and a $1,000 fine for his use of a corked bat.

Joc has just put the Cubbies ahead of the Gnats at Software Stadium.
I take back my negativity about Bellinger; I will switch to a wait-and-see attitude.
Woo-HOO!!! Good work, guys! Missed a laugher and I am fine with that!
I missed the key inning. I was umpiring. When I got to my car it was 11-1 Dodgers in the second inning. I relaxed.
Well hoping for the best for Link and that he will be home again soon.
Yippee!! Tied for 2nd now.
And closer to first than 4th! Lol
No, still half a game behind, 1.5 below the Gnats.
Aren’t they tied with the Padres?
My mistake. You are totally correct WBB.
Oh well. Wishful thinking.
Dodgers win!
3 inning save for Uceta?
Sadly not.
Will Smith in at third base?!
And he makes an error.
Hope this doesn’t last as long as the Joc at first experiment. Lol
Boy was that fun. Sheesh.
Will did play there in the minors. Looking for another option when Doc wants to rest JT. Could open up bringing in a 3rd catcher as well.
Time for some more ribeyes here Belli…
Walker: I don’t care about pitching in the 7th – I just want to hit again in the 6th!
RBI will be pleasantly surprised when she checks in!
See above! Woot woot!
Lots of pitches for Walker. But Dodgers should be comfortable in turning it over to the bullpen.
You would think so. Bueller at 103 pitches. It’s time to sit him down.
Pollock coming back soon. Friday I think. Yoshi is probably gone. I’d like to see him go to AAA and figure it out.
That would be great if he did figure it out and help contribute later this season.
Yep. I hope the kid does well.
Walker! Feeling hitter-ish!
Link informs me he’s at the hospital undergoing multiple tests. He sounds irked about it.
Ah man. Sorry to hear that. Prayers for Link.
Quality medical care will is a far superior alternative.
Oh don’t worry. I’ll pray for the doctors too. 🙂
Xians need to stop preying.
Dude. I’m just supporting and caring for Link. Don’t make this weird.
I’m with you, Winnipeg Dave.
If you don’t believe in religion or prayer, that’s your decision, but don’t go after those who do.

Reminds us all of game 3 vs Atlanta.
Well this is a fun way to wash dishes!
I take it all back (from last night) about Belli!
Why do the Dodgers pitch to Goldschmidt? He kills us.
With nobody on base in the first, you don’t pitch around anybody.
Good point.
Giants off, Puds loss. Playing with house money tonight. Let’s cash it in.
Gnats get a day’s reprieve from the June Swoon. The Pads pick up the slack.
Cash money looking good!
I am with a friend in Las Vegas for two nights and tonight after dinner I cleared eighty dollars. House money indeed!
No sign of Link tonight, and no response to a DM, so I’m posting the lineup here. https://twitter.com/Dodgers/status/1400206645074927617?s=20
We’ll kick their ass tonight.
Oh my god that is SO maddening!!!! Hotter night that goes out.
Okay! Base hit! We will take it!
Way past my bedtime time. Guess I will miss the comeback.
G’night.
Sad to learn of Mike Marshals passing. He was unique. Could use someone like him right now. RIP
Treinen should have not been out there in the ninth. He did his job in the 8th. Doc is not a good manager.
That’s why the Dodgers have only won five straight division titles under his managership, with just three WS appearances and only one championship (not counting that other one that was stolen).
Just about anyone could win with the lineup he’s been given. He may not be a bad manager, but, he is definately not a great manager.
Phooey!! Need someone to step up and get the clutch 2 out hit with runners on. So far, it hasn’t happened. Bullpen game and we held them to 3 runs. That is excellent. The offense failed miserably tonight.
Dang. Robbed of a run with the ground rule double. Hopefully we can get a few in now!
Quite a pitch by Gant to get JT.
No relation to his Cards predecessor Ron Gant, so far as I can tell.
Quite a ball player.
What was that????
That should be an error on Jones. Easy one-hopper.
He should have had it.
Still, no harm done. Gets the K.
Almost, Jones! Great grab by that pesky Edman.
I wonder if Pujols is the best player that has ever played for the Dodgers? Or do you prefer Greg Maddux?
Koufax, Robinson, Newcombe, Snider… Not sure what you’re getting at.
Love all those guys. But let’s face it Pujols/Maddux are more upper echelon HofF players than long time Dodger players. Doesn’t mean I don’t like Koufax, Kershaw, Robinson, Wheat and Vance better.
Frank Robinson, Eddie Murray and Dick Allen stick out in my mind.
Jim Thome?
Yep. Now you are playing the game right. 😉
Had thought of Murray as well.
So you mean players at the end of their careers?
Not necessarily. Just at any point of their career. Pedro comes to mind for example.
Arguably the worst trade ever.
Stupid Jody Reed.
D4P
Stupid Jody Reed.
It’s one thing to have a bullpen game every once in a while. But Joe Bullpen Game should not be a regular member of the rotation. Friedman needs to do something to remedy that, perhaps sign someone who can give us five or six innings. Bullpen games also weaken the bullpen for the rest of the rotation.
Agee that they have had a few too many bullpen games for my liking. Gonsolin back very soon though fortunately.
Yeah, think they are counting on Goose to fill that need. Don’t think there is much thought at this point of going outside the organization.
Expect as well that returning Brusdar, Nelson and Alexander will strengthen the pen.
Cleavinger and Gratoral as well!
Mentioned Graterol, not sure that Cleavinger is at the level of the rest.
Gonsolin is the natural No. 5 starter, but it will take some time to lengthen his innings.
He is already at five innings at the farm and after next start he may be ready to return.
True. But if he can go 4+ or 5 in his first start and then more in his next, it cuts down on bullpen games pretty quickly.
Every time I see that O’Neil catch my heart sinks.
Dodgers record: 10-1 vs AZ and Col, 22-22 against everyone else.
Ouch.
Yeah, that’s not great.
We have been terrible at holding runners this year. That steal may have lost us the game tonight.
Okay, fellas. I’m on the road for the next few days so will be chiming in late over the next two nights.
Everything is completely up in the air in the NL West, but we have suffered more than our share of disappointments and injuries.
I do think both the Padres and the Giants are due some slumps and we’ve had our share of those for sure.
Here’s hoping….Buehler goes tomorrow.
For the Gnats, the June Swoon has barely started.
Reality – this might not be the Dodgers year. It’s not feeling like it at this point anyway.
Well, it certainly is different than 2020 . . . to this point of the season at least.
Losing May really hurt us.
Absolutely.
Exponentially.
I know. I keep thinking it’s early but the magic dust feels like it’s landing on other teams more than us.
Exactly. To both Scoop and RBI’s comments.
This would have been our first walkoff win this season. We’ve had four walkoff losses.
So so close.
Grrrr. I mean, come on baseball gods. Throw us a bone.
We’re now 7-13 in one-run games.
See below. Re: bone.
¡Miércoles!
Rule 1 violation
Wednesday?
Sorry – I was joking.
Ha! Clearly I’m in no joking mood after that maddening end. We could have jumped the queue on both our rivals. Oh well. I’m visiting a friend the next two days and will have to forgo the next two until late in the game, if at all.
Anticipating tomorrow’s game.
Instead, we got the Mookie of this year.
Dang. Another 1 run loss.
Mookie that was one to hit.
We need the Mookie of last year right now.
Yes please.
Cody didn’t try to do too much.
It sounded very good.
He hit a cookie. 2019 Belli ends it right there.
I liked his short swing on that. He’s been missing with his longer ones. But you have a point.
I agree with you that it was the right swing for this at bat tonight. Just noticed the difference…
Let’s go Mookie!
Too eager.
I wanna walk-off…
Bellinger: 8 Ks in 11 ABS, 0 hits since his return. Boy, is he due.
Yeah, but this is a tough place to do it in.
Molina being the grown up in the room.
How fast is Yoshi I wonder?
You never know…
If ever there was a time…
Tsutsugo go time?
I think we be doomed. Such a shame after Beaty’s heroics. I blame the ump. Why not?
Need Yoshi to walk here
To good to be true.
You got it!
Taylor has been solid this year, but he leads the team in strikeouts.
Time for a Zach attack?
%€!£_,*!!
Reyes has an ERA of 0.64 this year but a WHIP of 1.36, so he is not invincible.
Tough closer but he’s due a blown save here.
Sad Beaty doesn’t get another at bat.
Rally time Dodgers.
Bad throw by Taylor, who should’ve gone to second.
Stolen base began the series of irritations.
Allowing runner to get to second is also bad news.
The whole series of moves stunk, basically
Well that is so so annoying.
Fluky.
Bottom of their line up, too.
And that ball has been called a strike for their pitchers all night long.
There goes the DP.
Doesn’t leave me with a good feeling…
Nope, for good reason.
Now WE need the DP.
Per someone’s comment below about framing, I wonder how many of those close called strikes are due to Molina.
More than necessary I’m sure!
Dodgers still looking for first walk-off win of the season I believe.
Also have a lot of room to improve 1 run game record and extra innings game record (if it gets there).
Go Gavin go.
No go.
Lux be a lady tonight!
So good. Surely worth an rbi.
I was going to say: “A RBI lady?”
At very least Lux is a LA D tonight.
Phoo. Got under it.
Bad at bat by Will. Watches two strikes and flails at a sinker.
Ump Is really on thin ice with these close calls almost all going against the Dodgers..
Why couldn’t O’Nelll do a Beaty on that one?
Why couldn’t O’Nelll do a Beaty on that one?
For a moment it looked hopeful.
Yep. Gallegos in again.
Excellent inning!
Take a knee.
Table turned on that play by Justin.
JT!!! Great out!
Got him!
Good inning.
Belli still searching for that first hit. He’ll get there.
Wonder if he could have used a bit more seasoning in OKC…
Maybe, but once he gets that first one, look out.
I hope you are right, but I am having my doubts.
I’m aiming for optimism.
He has a lengthy track record.
How long was he there?
Good question. 7 games. 29 at bats. 4 hits.
Ah, so not that long.
Smashing farm arms doesn’t help as much as getting exposed to Big arms. Works the other way, though. Raley is mashing it in OKC
Beaty would be the counter-example I suppose. He came back hot from Triple A.
Beaty was having troubles. Belli was rehabbing and not trying to work out issues.
And yet it seems like he has some issues now.
You think he needs to go back to the farm to work on them?
Lol. No I’m saying he should have stayed down longer. 🙂
He is a proven Big leaguer. He is where he should be at this point.
Just tough to see him clearly struggling so much.
Agreed.
Pujols: you pinch-ran me for that? I could have had another run scored to add to my ledger!
That’s one way to make people
forget that error!!
Beaty redemption
Surprising how little of the bench the Dodgers have used so far tonight
Tie game!!!!
Beaty!!!!!!!!!
Great future person!
(Takes a bow)
Or, take a walk!
And steal second, third, and home!
Zach might. Maybe. Possibly.
No need!
Come on, Albert. Launch one for
Old time’s sake.
Going with a big gun for the 7th.
Two innings?
31 innings in 25 appearances, so he has done it before.
26-28 pitches has been his ceiling so far this season.
Great to see Mitch White overcome his injuries and make it to the Bigs.
Lotsa pitches, but still looked pretty good.
Should have had about five or six less.
As Gnats lose 8-1, the June Swoon is officially underway.
Strike three ump!!!!
Wait, did Carlson make that catch? I thought it was Edman.
Edman caught Muncy’s liner.
Right.
Finally! Edman out!
Zelmo clanks a free throw.
Such an awkward angle to try to make the catch
He had to run a ways, but it wasn’t a difficult chance.
He really should have caught it.
Seemed to have drifted into him shielding his eyes from the ball and glove interaction.
He looks mortified.
Matt was such a terror at the plate.
https://twitter.com/juanctoribio/status/1399944571346296837?s=20
Well, that’s gotta be the end of Gant at least. I feel like he must be sacrificing chickens or something.
A bridge too far. With 3 innings left they may have to use one of their lesser arms to cover the 7th.
And maybe the better arms will be rusty.
Genesis sure crumbled.
Dang. Gant living a charmed life.
Seriously!
Also for “Tang” – which was my least favourite drink growing up.
“Gant” is an anagram for “Gnat.”
This is one of those bad luck can’t catch a break kinda games.
Oh that broken bat bleeder catch breaks my heart.
Bad call and then a good call gets JT.
Un frigging believable. Edman again!
I made a play like that once in slow pitch. Got a huge round of applause from other players waiting for their game to start after ours.
Mookie single! He is
looking so much better.
Jones has such an odd delivery.
Bickford as well.
Almost, Jones! Great grab by that pesky Edman.
That was way outside but Molina gets the call.
Jones living a charmed life at this point.
Not now.
I can’t figure out why Gant is so successful. He doesn’t throw that hard and throws a lot of balls. And yet, he gets the outs.
It’s bewildering.
And apparently he’s been doing this all year.
Unpredictable?
Okay CT3, do your thing.
That was a nasty change from Gant.
OK, no GIDPs!
Giddy-ups preferred.
Fly ball out. Sigh.
It was an hairy battle…
Maxi!
Beauty of a play by Max there.
Dueling long-haired pitchers.
Have always thought that catchers may move the mitt too much in framing, like Molina did there. Ump was hardly going to be persuaded that the pitch was right down the pipe. Just a little bit to bring it into the box might be enough.
Argh. Darn DPs.
Very bad future person!
Okay Kelly – hammer it!
Lol
Tee-hee. (He put some wood on it!)
He didn’t embarrass himself.
Hammered, but at somebody.
He had all the moves.
Lots of k’s tonight.
K-town!
Need Beaty to do some business here.
Alas, no joy.
Pads lose to Cubbies, and Gnats trail 8-0 in the fourth (June Swoon has begun).
Big inning boys. Let’s do it.
Got him.
A few hits finding holes. Let’s clamp it down here Joe.
The Angles have just taken a 3-0 lead over the Gnats in the third.
At Wrigley, Machado just made a worse throw than either of McKinstry’s last night. Earlier, he styled a ball that just missed going out of the park, and only got a single off it.
