Dodgers at Red Sox, 4:00 PM PDT, TV: ESPN
The Dodgers’ Cy Young candidate LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu (10-2, 1.73 ERA) faces off against the Red Sox’ LHP David Price (7-2, 3.24 ERA). If not for a seven-run debacle against the Rockies on July 28, Ryu’s ERA would be 1.20. Price, who was initially drafted by the Dodgers out of high school but who went to Vanderbilt instead, beat the Dodgers twice in the World Series last fall.
Here are the Dodgers’ four dingers in Saturday’s game:
Today in Dodgers’ history:
- 1968 In the nightcap of a twin bill, Don Wilson strikes out eighteen batters in a nine-inning game to tie the then major league record, shared by Bob Feller (Indians, 1938) and Sandy Koufax (Dodgers, 1959 and 1962). The Astros right-hander fans future Hall of Famer Johnny Bench for the last out of his 6-1 victory over the Reds on a wind-swept night at Crosley Field.

via Astrosdaily.com - 1995 Ramon Martinez throws the 22nd no-hitter in franchise history when he beats the Marlins at Dodger Stadium, 7-0. The Dodger right-hander, who was booed by the home crowd in his last outing, was perfect before walking Tommy Gregg on a 3-2 pitch after getting the first out in the seventh inning.
- 2005 Defeating their historical arch rivals, the Giants become the first team to win 10,000 games as a franchise by edging the Dodgers in LA, 4-3. The Giants, who started as the New York Gothams in 1899, have posted a 10,000-8,511 record during the club’s 123 seasons in the National League.
Lineup when available.

Throwing all lefties at the Dodgers backfired for the Sawx. LA is now 20-12 when a southpaw starts.
Missed a doozy!
NPUT @ 0830 HST, 1130 PDT, 1430 EDT
He was a pitcher at one time. Dodgers might consider making him a two-way player?

The in house lefty setup reliever that also plays outfield.
The new Fernando…
From one of the MLB game stories:
I’m not sure this is any different from how Roberts eased Seager back in at the start of the season. For that matter, it how he brings Turner back from hamstrings, too.
Our runs/pitch ratio is decreasing rapidly throughout the game.
Bye bye Price, though!
Dare I say Price is in a foul mood?
I love your sense of humour Bumsrap.
Unfortunately for those that are around me more, I sometimes like it too.
Well played.
Matt Vasgersian on ESPN said while Muncy was up in the 12th, just before he walked to force in a run, “Muncy has three bases-loaded walks this year.” After Max took ball four he said “FOUR!”
102 pitches, he is almost gone–Priceless
Ah, they had it all the time.
Pedro might have been due for a bad outing, but next time have it in a bigger ball park please.
Tastee Freese
Dodgers now lead Snakes and Rox by 14-1/2, Pads by 16, Gnats by 17-1/2. They’re 4-1/2 ahead of Barves for best NL record, and one game (.005) ahead of Yanquis for baseball’s best.
I don’t know what the win percentage chart was like for tonight but here was my take:
Dodgers are going to win. (Top of first)
Dodgers might not win (Bottom of the first).
Dodgers are going to win (mid innings)
Dodgers are going to lose (bottom of the 8th through to the bottom of the 11th)
Dodgers are going to win (Top of the 12th)
Dodgers better not lose (bottom of the 12th)
Dodgers win! (Game has ended)
Good work, Kelly!
Really satisfying win.
Agreed!
Woo-HOO!!!
Dodgers win!
Future people, get to work!
Martin chanting with Kelly.
Chanting? Chatting.
Lol
It could have been an eldritch ritual meant to befuddle the runner on second.
The future is bright!
I gotta wear shades.
Verdugo’s swing is solid.
Kelly is coming in.
Just what I need to calm my nerves.
It could turn out alright. Hopefully.
There’s one!
Big K for the first out.
Floro may be losing command.
Still take one more run.
Run number 3!
No video here, but Gameday suggests Verdugo swung at a pitch over his head.
Short compact swing and hit it flat and just right.
True. But it was up in his eyes almost.
Verdugo gets another over!
Every run helps!
Let’s get one of the wall.
Rats. Pop up. Corey knew it, too.
https://twitter.com/billplunkettocr/status/1150619755537162240?s=20
It’s like a regular west coast game.
Let’s go Seager. Time for your first hit.
Now, pour it on!
There’s one!
Come on snacks Muncy.
Glad they didn’t send Joc.
This seems promising.
Here’s hoping.
Good eye Joc.
Belli time.
Oops. First Joc Pop.
Could we get another Dodger run now?
Phewwww!
No video here – could the throw have had him at second?
He was safe. But a better throw could have had him.
Some help from the Sawx!
Nice play LA!
Regardless of the outcome there has been some fun things about this game.
Floro in.
Not a great choice by Ebel.
Agreed. Usually he is really good.
No ties Buster. No ties.
CT3 is out.
Or crazily staying in.
Found the game again!
Do it Dugo!
Let’s go Seager.
Now it gets really interesting.
No, it’ll get truly interesting when Russell Martin goes for the save.
Kenley!
No intentional balk here please.
So. Who pitches the 11th for LA?
Russell Martin?
Quite possibly.
Lol
Take a ground ball out here.
Some nice plays in LF tonight for LA.
Take a ground ball DP here.
Should Doc have let Ryu pitch into the 8th?
Hindsight…
I’m actually asking. Hindsight aside. I would say no.
Lost the ESPN game to poker.
I still have it
Really? They cut away for poker?
World Series Poker, that is.
Nope. Still not a good call.
Talk about down the river.
I’m all in. Night all.
Make those MVP chants get louder Bellinger.
Now to score six!
Yes please.
Survived to live another inning
Wow!
One to go.
One more.
Ball 2 looked a lot like strike 2.
Yep.
Ump! Help us out here!
Walking Betts is the right move.
Roscup could have done that intentionally and kept the game moving with Jansen in to pitch to lefty Devers or let Roscup pitch to lefty Devers.
Oh good. Put a guy on to start the inning, then remove the pitcher who walked him. Why did you put in a guy whose control was suspect, Dave?
Lefty righty matchups but Cora now pinch hits to mess that strategy.
Rosscup and now Garcia? Yikes.
Ambulance chasers
Heck, Jansen’s thrown as many gopher balls as anyone this year.
Okay, let’s survive the bottom of the 9th and then score ourselves.
Not seeing any survival skills yet
Quite a pitch. Gotta tip the cap on that one.
Wish we had someone in our bullpen who can come in and strike out hitters without giving up home runs!
Said every manager ever.
Especially this year.
Yep.
Rosscup? Not sure I’m comfortable having him come in a tie game.
Do not get it.
Baez is marvelous now.
And I was in such a good mood (although nervous about the bullpen…).
We need to score about six in the ninth.
And get two good bullpen guys.
We have to solve this. It’s so demoralizing, not to mention unfair, to our starters.
Fenway channeling its inner Colorado.
Adding insult to injury, ESPN positively gloating.
Thanks Ryu. Sorry about that.
Baez, really?!?!?!
We give up the lead!
Oh fine.
Boo
Got that over with, now shut them down.
No no no. Not what the doctor ordered.
So close to being only a double.
Okay, Pedro, be good.
ESPN announcers Never. Stop. Talking.
Never!
One of ESPN’s most irksome features is that they don’t even allow Gameday to show highlights.
I would gladly take another run or three.
Especially if Ryu doesn’t go 9
Ryu! Rock star.
Wow, surprised they are walking Belli to get to Pollock.
RHH
“Right,” I forgot.
https://twitter.com/kengurnick/status/1150579099338977280?s=20
Nice easy inning for Ryu.
Now it’s time for the Dodgers to score a couple more runs
Your mouth to Dog’s ears.
He seems to be at least listening
Or not…
I might have a few more toys if He / She were to, you know…
Verdugo with the out!
Verdugo is “the executioner.”
Was that Martinez trying to score from second?
Devers from second.
A third baseman so probably not much speed. Kind of a desperate decision to sent him home knowing Verdugo’s arm.
I’ll bet they didn’t know about Verdugo.
They do now
Can’t give away those outs, Muncy.
Scored a hit, but would a good throw have had him?
Well, very close.
Muncy looked very Saxy.
https://twitter.com/billplunkettocr/status/1150573425964015616?s=20
I was surprised how many Dodger fans were critical of Pollock’s signing and slow start.
He has talent, but he’s been very injury-prone.
All I remember is how he used to kill us.
I absolutely love our patient at bats.
And all those foul balls.
A lot of players just coming off the IL
En fuego.
Sometimes I can’t help myself
Pollock does it again!
AJ singles him in!
Pollock with another rbi.
That is the third or fourth foul ball to land juuuust foul this series.
A WP would do.
Up to tonight’s star AJ to drive in Freese.
Argh! Thought A. J. had it there!
Ok CB. A single will do nicely.
Nope.
Ryu is in his groove.
That last pitch just kept breaking
Right into a commercial break.
Yak. Yak. Yak. About to put ESPN on mute.
I’m on an ESPN blackout, so I’ve got Neverett and Monday (no Steiner, thank Dog).
How old is the universe in Dog years?
Approximately 42 billion (subject to additional research).
Take out the papers and the trash
Or you don’t get no spendin’ cash
If you don’t scrub that kitchen floor
You ain’t gonna rock and roll no more
Yakety yak (don’t talk back)
Almost, Russell. But good at bat, building up that pitch count.
Martin deserved better.
Not THAT exciting a foul ball catch, guys.
Ryu has settled down, now to get him some more runs.
Price has settled in as well but much higher pitch count.
Concurrent with the Dodger defense settling down.
The ESPN broadcast has a lot more talk than the players have hits.
I guess that the upside on an ESPN blackout.
Exciting first inning.
110 foot home run 3, Dodger defense 2
Thank Dog that inning’s over.
You are dyslexic.
I believe in Dog.
Is there only one Dog?
I walk with Him every day.
You are feeling feisty today I see.
Maybe it’s a blessing not to have video for this.
It’s been both tremendous and torturous watching so far.
The defense has been alternatively awesome and awful.
Okay Ryu. Work your stuff.
Yikes that was ugly defence.
Muncy flashing the leather!
https://twitter.com/Ned2point0/status/1150547071608320000?s=20
Ha and it ends up being a Big Fly.
Right off the melon. Thankful for batting helmets.
Pollock’s Pole!
Nice!
HR!!! AJ!!
Let’s get it done Bellinger.
According to MLBTV app, all today’s games are free “Game of the Day.” Does this mean no ESPN blackout for Dodgers/Sawx?
I’m pretty sure Friday was also a free game, and it was blacked out here.
(I didn’t realize yesterday’s game was on Fox, so I could’ve watched in real time.)
I don’t think that was an ESPN game, though. “Free game” wouldn’t mean much if it’s blocked in all markets.
Ahem. On the first line of every post I note what TV channel the game will be on.
(Sob! No one reads my posts!)
I’m a skimmer. It’s a curse…
We are just too excited to read what you write immediately after that tv listing line!
The question is whether ESPN will be a blackout unless you’re willing to pay the extortionists at Comcast (or any other “provider”).
Ha! Nice throw. Helps to have the ball in your hand first though.
Nice lead-off walk CT3.
Kinda sad that Seager is not starting. He is going to breakout soon and I thought it might be tonight.
Today’s “Free Game of the Day” is indeed blacked out.
