Dodgers at Reds, 4:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA
Two more lefties go against one another: Brett Anderson (7-8, 3.52 ERA) versus David Holmberg (1-3, 6.57 ERA). If this matchup looks familiar, there’s a reason: they faced one another back on August 15. The Dodgers came out ahead in that game 8-3, getting five hits and seven runs off Holmberg and driving him out of the game in just two innings. Puig, Hernandez and Turner all hit homers off him, and Gonzalez hit one off his successor. Anderson went six innings and gave up three earned runs to get the win.
Lineup when available.
Tonight's #Dodgers lineup:
Rollins SS
Puig RF
Gonzalez 1B
Turner 3B
Van Slyke LF
Utley 2B
Ellis C
Hernandez CF
Anderson P #whiff

Steiner’s bad at any time, but early in the morning is truly cringe-worthy.
Breakfast with the chump, huh?
If Orel would stop using “we” and “us,” he could be a real asset.
3 Dodger relievers didn’t even make 10 pitches last night….5,6, and 4.
DM is writing the textbook for future study of bizarre to outright bad bulllpen management. Many managers overmanage their pens, so he may be afraid not to do the same.
I couldn’t follow but seeing those numbers and knowing who was calling the shots make it likely that all this was not necessary.
NPUT @ 0900PT.
Woo-HOO!!! (Late, but still true…)
We win! Not easy and way too many pitchers but we’ll take it.
Yabba dabba doo!
Ball game!
Nothing easy here.
Charlie, you nitwit. Telling us Van Slyke was coming up, when he’d been replaced by Ethier who was subsequently replaced by Crawford an inning before.
Vin may be 86 years old, but Steiner’s the senile one.
Gonzo with a nice stroke on that hit.
Rollins has hit occasional homers, 13 in all, but he has too many oh-fers in the leadoff spot for me. We truly do not have a leadoff hitter this season.
Joc was for a while. Rollins has been much better lately.
Not sure who that might be. Not sure that would be Seager’s best spot. If Howie is replaced could be looking at Quique or Peraza. Joc might also land there again.
Iannetta doubled for the Angels leading off the 9th inning vs. Verlander, breaking up the no-hit bid. The ball hit the foul line. Verlander pitched a one-hit shutout, winning 5-0..
JV already has two no-no’s so he’s doing ok in that department.
Besides those two he’s gone into the ninth at least once if not more times with a chance, only to have it broken up. I’d like to see him get back to full health and ability. The more great pitchers the better.
That spring I mentioned earlier has tightened up considerably. Fortunately Bruce gets struck out again by Avilan.
Dodgers not looking sharp at all the last 2 innings.
Surprised to see Johnson start the inning. Now going to Howell.
Drat it. Gift double to lead off the inning for the Reds.
Still interesting in Detroit, top of the 8th.

Which Johnson do we get tonight: Dr. Jekyl or Mr. Hyde?
I guess it was Hyde.
Other way ’round. Jekyl was the good man, Hyde was the monster. Johnson got the K and didn’t allow the runner to score, ergo Jekyl. 😉
Of course. I was actually going to say he was either Hekyl because that’s often what happens when he pitches.
More like Heckle and Jeckle!
Was Utley’s error on a difficult chance?
He kinda back peddled into the outfield and then just as he was about to catch it, it went off the heel of his glove. Definitely could have had it.
Thanks. So, basically, he dropped a somewhat difficult pop-up?
Yes.
Frustrating last 10 minutes – solid single, error, passed ball, seeing eye single up the middle, etc and suddenly it’s a 6-3 game.
There goes the laugher.
Now come on, Anderson, settle down. We’ve been happily enjoying this game. Don’t let it get away from you.
Anyone know when Kendrick is due back?
Not till September, as I recall.
The guy pitching for the Angels now is Cam Bedrosian. Yes, Steve (Bedrock) Bedrosian’s son.
I feel old. I wonder if his nickname also is Bedrock.
Love it when the pitchers pitch count corresponds with the innings pitched. For example, Anderson was at 77 pitches with 2 out in the 7th.
Now at 83 pitches with 2 on after Utley’s miscue.
The interesting Tigers-Angels game is on MLBTV.
Ooh! Even Better!
The Dodgers have hit 13 homers vs. the Reds in 5 games and 6 innings this season.
This game has as much tension as a stretched out spring. I am not complaining but it does nothing to help captivate my son.
Switch over to the Angels-Tigers game on Gameday. Verlander is throwing a very interesting game there.
Thanks for the tip!
When one of these “Interesting” games happens Gameday highlights it on the scorecard bar above the game you’re watching. It’s nice of MLB to do that.
It’s nice, on occasion, to see a no-stress game.
Nice double by Hernandez!
Anderson is sharp so far. He has had some really good stretches of pitching this season.
Not Kershaw/Greinke good, but you know – solid.
So for $10 USD, I purchased MLB.tv for the rest of the regular season. Hooked up the Apple TV we got last Christmas (and have rarely used), and now watching the Dodgers hit home run after home run on my tv. I could get used to this.
Puig!!!!
Can we play Cincinnati for another month or so? Everyone looks good against them – including/especially Puig.
Just peeked in. Scotty!!!! AJ!!!!!
Two homers in one inning. Where is everybody?
Holmberg has an All-Star future (in the home-run derby).
I purchased a set of the old Home Run Derby video that was filmed at Wrigley Field in Los Angeles more than 50 years ago. It is delightful to watch. Having grown up in L.A., I went to many of the PCL L.A. Angels games there. My hero was Steve Bilko.
I was a Seattle Rainiers fan, and remember seeing Vada Pinson on TV. A few years later I was a Tacoma Giants fan, when the PCL moved there in 1960 (but I was always a Dodgers fan at major league level).
The PCL Angels and Hollywood Stars used to televise some games. Those were the years before the Dodgers moved west. I greatly looked forward to the Saturday Game of the Week on NBC with Dizzy Dean and Buddy Blattner behind the microphones and was I excited when the Dodgers were on the air. I saw Carl Erskine’s second no-hitter on a 9-inch, black-and-white TV.
I saw future Dodgers Manny Mota and Tom Haller play in Tacoma.
I remember the first-year AL Angels when they had Bilko and Albie Pearson. They did some PR shots with Bilko the Giant next to Albie the Mouse.
Rollins with RISP this year .158 (15-for-95), RISP wit two outs .151 (8-for-53), including last at bat.
Steiner’s a moron, but nevertheless makes the interesting comment that Rollins has as many HRs as Hanley had all last year.
And the Red Sox are going to ask him to play 1B next season, since he’s proven he can’t play left field.
In some ways, 1B is the easiest position, but errors there can be extremely costly – not to mention failure to dig out throws.
Okay, Kiké, now’s your chance.
Be nice if Scotty got hot (that dunker could help). BTW, he leads club in dWAR at 0.9.
Good call.
Package will be disappointed to read that

That should be his better side in any event, given that it is left shoulder that is hurting.
It’s his power side, but he hits for higher average RH.
Win tonight and Dodgers take the series. It’s just that easy to get some momentum (hopefully).
