Game 146, 2023

Dodgers at Mariners, 7:10 PM PDT, TV: MLBN (out-of-market only), Root NW, SPNLA

RHP Bobby Miller (9-3, 3.98 ERA) climbs the mound at T-Mobile Park for the Dodgers and RHP George Kirby (10-9, 3.48 ERA) does so for the Mariners. As of today Seattle is the third wild card team in the AL.

Today in Dodgers history:

  • 1951 Preacher Roe wins his 20th game of the season when the Dodgers beat the Pirates at Forbes Field, 3-1. The 36 year-old southpaw will finish the season with a 22-3 record.
  • 2002 Chin-Feng Chen becomes the first Taiwan-born player to appear in the major leagues as he walks and scores as a pinch-hitter for the Dodgers against the Rockies. The 24 year-old first baseman-outfielder played for the 1990 Taiwan team which won the Little League World Series.
  • 2008 Mets shortstop Jose Reyes, with his eighth-inning thievery in a 7-4 loss to the Braves at Shea Stadium, becomes the first player to have four straight seasons of 50 or more stolen bases playing for a New York area team, which also includes Yankees, Dodgers, and Giants. The accomplishment extends the infielder’s own record, as he is also the only Gotham major leaguer to achieve the feat for three consecutive years.

Also, in 1990 Mariner Ken Griffey and his son, Junior, become the first father and son to hit homers in the same major league game. The back-to-back blasts are given up by Angel hurler Kirk McCaskill.

Lineups when available.

  1. Apropos of not much, old friend Greinke is 1-15 with a 5.39 ERA. Tonight, however, he blanked the Trashtros for two innings before leaving the game.

  2. Good win. Good game. I will be at Sunday’s game.

Rojas did not have to jump. He made a simple play hard.

  3. Wow. That seemed like it must have been at the very top of the strike zone. Like the attic. Or the aerial antenna.

  4. This game has a playoff-like feel to it.*

*At least a playoff game that is not a blowout. Those can happen as well.

  5. I like Outman laying down a bunt every once in a while. He needed more roll down the line to get a hit.

  6. Defensive play of the day belongs to the fan that caught the home run ball. Why isn’t home run one word?

  7. I want the Dodgers to win these games but, as an expat Northwesterner, I want Seattle to win their division over the Trashtros.

  8. I am embarrassed. I figured there would be no travel day between the end of the Padres series and the beginning of the Mariners series. It’s what, a three-hour flight between LAX and Seattle?

Oh well. The info above pertains to tomorrow night’s game.

    • I’m old enough to remember Sick’s Seattle Stadium, where I saw the Pilots play the Sawx and, sitting in the left field bleachers, we had a running conversation with Ken Harrelson (as a broadcaster, so bad he was good).
