Dodgers at Nationals, 4:05 PM PDT, TV: MASN 2, SPNLA
RHP Emmet Sheehan (3-1, 5.31 ERA) takes the mound for the visiting Dodgers and LHP MacKenzie Gore (7-10, 4.28 ERA) does so for the Nationals.
Have you noticed how high the uniform numbers worn by some of the Dodgers’ young pitchers are? Bryan Hudson (#93) is the highest of them all, then Dustin May (#85). Sheehan’s wearing #80, Michael Grove has #78 and Bobby Miller’s got #70.
- 1955 The Dodgers clinch their eighth National League pennant with a 10-2 victory over the Braves at Milwaukee’s County Stadium. Brooklyn’s 17-game lead makes it the earliest date that a team has captured a flag in baseball history.
- 1957 Before their departure to play on the West Coast for next season, the Dodgers and Giants face one another for the final time in New York. The Jints beat the Bums at the Polo Grounds, 3-2, to finish the intense 68 year-old storied rivalry with a 656-606 advantage over Brooklyn in the battle between the boroughs.
- 1967 The Mets, at the urging of their fans, honor former Dodger pitcher Sandy Koufax, who retired last season when arthritis ended his career prematurely at the age of 30. The Brooklyn-born southpaw, who threw a no-hitter against New York in 1962, started twenty games against the Amazin’s, compiling a 17-2 record that included 14 complete games and 5 shutouts.
- 2007 Alex Rodriguez, hitting his 50th and 51st home runs, joins Babe Ruth (1920-54, 1921-59, 1927-60, 1928-54), Roger Maris (1961-61), and Mickey Mantle (1956-52, 1961-54) to become only the fourth player in Yankee history to hit 50 or more homers in a single season. The Yankee infielder’s second homer breaks the major league mark of 49 homers hit by a third baseman, shared with Mike Schmidt (Phillies-1980) and Adrian Beltre (Dodgers-2004).
- 2017 The Dodgers, who just a couple of months ago seemed poised to challenge the major league record of 116 wins in a season, lose again, their 8th straight defeat and 13th in 14 games, as they bow to the Rockies, 5 – 4. They blow an early 4 – 1 lead as D.J. LeMahieu hits a two-run double in the 5th to put Colorado ahead to stay. On a positive note, Yu Darvish records the 1000th strikeout of his career, punching out Carlos Gonzalez in the 5th, becoming the fastest starting pitcher to reach the mark, in 812 innings over 128 games.
One of the most important inventions in all of baseball history was officially introduced on this day in 1885 when George H. Rawlings patented a close-fitting baseball glove that features padding made of felt and rubber in the fingers, thumb, and palm. The owner of a St. Louis sporting goods store invented the padded piece of equipment to prevent players from bruising their hands when catching a ball.

New Yawk got one right! Nice play by ViGo and Freddie.
Amazing.

What an awful piece of “music.” Better we go with https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8LziWAdhYhs
You never cease to amaze me. SMH

Out at third? Maybe so! Or maybe not…
Looks tough to overturn.
Not from what they showed on the scoreboard here.
And I thought I was watching live. Nope, maybe 20 seconds behind you.
We won’t see Buehler this year:

An abundance of caution, I suspect – avoiding the temptation to overuse him.

Yay!!!
Yeehaw!
Dodgers win!
Woo-HOO!!!
One more out!
I still don’t get this Wong thing.
He’s going to get the Series-winning pinch-hit in Game Six.
So finally we have arrived here at the bottom of the 9th.
Dodgers should have challenged. Just to make the game last a bit longer. For the kids.
Ha! You crazy Canadians and your weather!
How many different fielding positions has Kiké played since coming back to the Dodgers?
Is it me or is the camera angle on fly balls a bit off tonight?
Camera work was pretty bad on that last fly ball.
Both?
OK. Here we go. Finish them off boys.
Wow. How the Rangers have tanked.
I’m sad by that. They are a million times better to root for than Houston.
Totally. I was hoping they would oust the Asstros.
My beloved Seager! Like Max as well. And U-less.
Dodgers haven’t really missed Seager. I preferred Trea, and Rojas is a huge defensive upgrade.
Big bat, though, with OPS+179!
Just declare the game over, umps.
Radio said that the tarp is coming off and the game should start in 15 to 20 minutes
I will harvest some tomates in the yard, then.
We have squirrels to harvest ours. One bite and they toss them.
The squirrels do that with our Santa Rosa plums, but have little interest in cherry tomatoes.
With a larger group that voted to leave at the first drop. No problem for me as I will get a lot of baseball this weekend.
More info please.
Nothing to see, might as well go home. Plenty more baseball this weekend for our DC resident, as long as there’s no more rain.
Big event for one of my Dodger fan buddies tomorrow as he gets some on-the-field recognition for volunteer work as a Little League commish in DC.
Downside is blackout on the tube once I get there.
I took advantage to take the canines on a dump walk, but disappointed game has not resumed.
More than one?
Our husky and our daughter’s boxer/pit/supermutt (according to official DNA results). She and my wife are at a family event in Olavarría.
Dodgers escaped the hurricanes, but now…
A little late with the tarp
Oh Toto, we’re not in Cleveland anymore.
Well that sucked.
Every time I take a peak the Dodgers have 2 or 3 on and nobody out.
Kieboom is a Dutchman.
You lost me
Nederlander
Prospector?

Kieboom is a Dutch surname and it means “rock tree”.
Taylor and Muncy were not trying to kill the ball with their last two at-bats with great results.
Max, the ball killer.
Nice going, Blue people!
Smurffy
Lotsa zurdos on the Nats (gnot the Gnats).
Maybe should have raised JD’s eyes before going back to the sinker?
Maybe Taylor should bat leadoff more often.
As I said below, who needs Mookie?
That’s how you do it!
Is that Ángel Hernández behind the plate again?
Fourth sac bunt of the season.
Everybody happy with the small ball there, with K-prone CT3 coming up?
I’m OK with it.
Certainly not a conventional call.
Rojas could have done it on his own
OK, time to something with RISP.
I can’t get too upset over Sheehan’s audition. He’s got a future.
I think he would be at least a good piggyback pitcher for the playoffs. Maybe with Kershaw.
I can see that. Dodgers are going to have to get creative in the playoffs with their pitching. Use Lynn as an opener and bring in Yarbough.
sigh
The kid actually pitched better than his line will reflect. The pitch to Ruiz was not bad. Muncy didn’t help.
The home run pitch to Abrams was not a strike either.
Too bad he couldn’t have gotten thru five innings.
Huge missed opportunity.
Yes, those lost runs would have been really good in light of what just happened.
A run or two there would have been nice
Or six…
Oh, man, guys. What a wasted bunch of runners.
Who needs Mookie, anyway?
Freddie matching doubles count with Big D’s uniform number.
I wonder if Emmet sings as well as Ed.
The horse?
Well, Wilbur…
No, but I got the singer’s name wrong. It’s’ SheeRan, not H. Oh well.
Kiké too? Yay!
When Max connects, it’s a thing of beauty.
Max!
We’re going to need a bigger boat.
Ruiz the Dodger killer
More JD please
Well, we are running up the pitch count on this guy.
Hang in there Emmett.
Better inning for Emmett.
Muncy is not a good third baseman.
He’s good enough.
Define good enough. He entered the day tied for the league lead in errors at third unless someone surpassed him last night.
dWAR 0.0
Not really. Muncy should be sitting against lefties. Taylor or Kike make that play at 3B.
Actually a great 1st and 2nd baseman, helping the team by playing third. Not his choice.
Great might be a little strong.
LOL
Something tells me you don’t like Max wherever he plays.
Not really. Muncy should be sitting against lefties. Taylor or Kike make those plays at 3B..
Not many opportunities at first.
He provided 0.7 dWAR as a 1st baseman in 2019 and 0.9 in 2022 as a 2nd baseman.
This season he’s had about as many opportunities at 1B as I have.
May I introduce you to Freddie Freeman?
I’m Freddie’s backup.
He doesn’t contribute with his glove, but is not negative at 0.0 dWAR.
I don’t wanna see it this weekend, but there’s gotta be a great home run call for Kieboom.
Muncy butchered this inning.
That was not a routine play. Sheehan bears most of the responsibility, for walking Abrams and tossing the gopher to Ruiz.
Routine enough
A good 3B makes that play.
A Graig Nettles makes that play.
Start over, Sheehan.
Keibert Ruiz revenge swing.
Aw shucks.
Well shoot. That really sucks.
Ugh.
Get the glove down Max
Rats!!
Argh. Overturned.
Atta boy Willy.
We really need to get a better 3B next year.
Perfect throw wasted by a bad tag. Second runner also due to a Max error.
Trade bat for glove? Not a premier defensive position.
Tell Brooks Robinson that. And Craig Nettles.
Arenado, Machado…..
Not certain they are available.
Okay, fine then, I’ll take Brooks Robinson.
Providing the names of great fielding 3rd basemen doesn’t make it a more important defensive position than it is.
Agree, the up the middle positions are the premier defensive positions but the ball will find a weak spot.
Kike or Taylor would have made that play.
Sheehan about 7 innings ahead of Pepiot regarding base hits.
Keep the ball down Emmett.
Gotta lay off that high cheese. Will and Max both SO on the high balls.
From the article Scoop posted a couple of hours ago:
That sounds unpleasant.
That’s nice to see, JD!
JD is back (back, back)!
So glad to have him back in the lineup.
That’s auspicious.
Holy Cow!!
JD!!!!
Bad base running there, CT3.
Not terrible. Could have been a hit and run play by Doc. I hope they stay aggressive on the bases.
I think he usually runs at first movement which takes the need for skill out of base stealing. He mostly gets away with it.
Mookie unlikely to play this weekend:
https://sports.yahoo.com/mookie-betts-likely-wont-play-193648155.html
Puts a dent in my fun this weekend.
Will you be attending all three games? Would love to get your perspective on any of the games you are at. No eyes, no ears where I am.
Tonight’s game we are above the pen, still most reporting will be on any shenanigans among the relievers. One year in these seats had Justin launch dingers that landed within six feet of me on each side.
Division and playoffs are all but secured. No need to play him with an injury. Same with Kersh. We need both 100% in October.
