Game 136, 2023

Braves at Dodgers, 1:10 PM PDT, TV: Bally Sports SE, SPNLA

The seemingly-ageless RHP Charlie Morton (14-10, 3.29 ERA) goes for the Braves and RHP Bobby Miller (8-3, 4.00 ERA) goes for the Dodgers, who’ll try to salvage one game of this four-game set.

Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1917 Grover Cleveland Alexander goes the distance in both games of the Phillies’ doubleheader sweep of Brooklyn at Ebbets Field. In his 18 innings of work, the Philadelphia right-hander limits the Dodgers to seven hits en route to posting 5-0 and 9-3 victories in the twin bill.
  • 1956 In front of the largest regular-season crowd in County Stadium history, the league-leading Braves split a twin bill with the Reds, 5-3 and 5-7. Much to the delight of many of the 47,604 fans attending the Labor Day double-dip, the home team ends the day 3.5 games in front of Cincinnati and the Dodgers, but Milwaukee will finish the season in second place, winning only 11 of 23 of its remaining games.
  • 1978 At Dodger Stadium, Lee Mazzilli becomes the first Mets player to hit a home run from each side of the plate in a game. The center fielder’s first and seventh inning blasts, respectively hit off southpaw Tommy John and right-hander Charlie Hough, pace the last-place club to an 8-5 victory.

Lineups when available.

  1. I’m back and I thank all of you for the runs. Looking at the play-by-play, we have squandered some chances.

  2. Guatemalan Heritage Night is interesting at Dodger Stadium. I’ve seen baseball in Guatemala City, but it’s a minor sport and, though there’ve been some players in organized baseball, I don’t any has ever made it to the majors.

    • Ya jinxed him. Lol. He did the Wiley E Coyote thing where he realized he was defying gravity and then he fell.

  3. I’m taking a break. I’m depending upon the rest of you to get us some runs. Thanking you in advance,

  4. Cubs scored 10 runs in the last two innings today in Cincinnati and beat the Reds, 15-7. Bellinger homered , drove in three runs and is hitting .320.

  5. Orel says they’re leaning toward the call on the field. If that’s so, a whole lot of umpires are getting positive feedback they shouldn’t.

    • They know what the call is and they don’t overturn without overwhelming evidence, so yeah.

  6. Walker Buehler pitched 2 perfect innings on 24 pitches in his first rehab start at OKC with 2 K this afternoon.

  7. I’m going to exercise and listen. I’m already grumpy so that should help mellow me out. Right?

  8. Feeling good about today. Of the first 3 games, Dodgers should really have won last night and were close to stealing the first game.

But, if you are only going to win one – may as well be the Kershaw game.

  9. These past three games have been highly reminiscent of the last 3 games of the 2022 NLDS against the Padres. Can’t score with RISP. And striking out at an alarming rate.

So far this series we are: 3 for 24 with RISP, 23 LOB, 36 SO.
Three losses in 2022 NLDS: 2 for 26 with RISP, 26 LOB, 34 SO.

Seems we need a different approach

    • Different results would be nice, but what are you suggesting in terms of a different approach?

      • Maybe try shortening your swing with 2 strikes and work on putting the ball in play. Play more small ball. I don’t claim to have the answer. I am just observing that the current approach is not working.

        • They won 111 games last year and on pace to win 100 this year. You take 3 games from last year that they lost and three games this year that they lost and say that they should have a different approach. You always look bad when you lose, which the Dodgers don’t do as often as other teams. You want a different approach in general or just for specific games?

          • Atlanta got a bunt base hit yesterday. The Dodgers didn’t try a bunt. Atlanta has severe shifts leaving a huge hole from third base to the middle of the left side. I don’t see anybody going the other way or bunting. It’s an approach. Would it be a better one? Hard to argue with success.

          • One hit? Weak sauce. What the games have shown me is that our starting pitching is weaker than theirs. We may be more effective with pen games using some of the yougins’ as long men.
