Game 80, 2023

Dodgers at Rockies, 5:40 PM PDT, TV: ATTSportsNet-RM, MLBN (out-of-market only), SPNLA

RHP Emmet Sheehan (1-0, 1.50 ERA) is on the bump for the Dodgers and RHP Chase Anderson (0-2, 5.79 ERA) pitches for the Rockies.

In light of Domingo Germán’s perfect game, here’s a fun fact I learned watching the Berra documentary “It Ain’t Over” yesterday: In 1999 Steinbrenner finally apologized to Yogi for firing him in 1985 just 16 games into the season, despite his promise that Berra would have two full seasons to manage the Yankees. Then, on July 18 of that year, the Yankees honored Yogi with a day at the Stadium. Don Larsen threw out the ceremonial first pitch. Larsen said during the film that he normally left after three or four innings of those celebratory games, but he stayed for the entire game this time. Why? Well, David Cone threw an 88-pitch perfect game that day. What are the odds that a guy who threw one would be at the game to see another guy do the same?

Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1923 Dodger first baseman Jacques Fournier goes 6-for 6, collecting a home run, two doubles, and three singles. The southpaw-swinging slugger’s 11 total bases contribute to Brooklyn’s 14-5 victory over the Phillies at the Baker Bowl.
  • 1960 The Phillies strike out a dozen times in each end of a doubleheader when they are swept by the Dodgers at Connie Mack Stadium, 6-3 and 5-2. The 24 Ks tie a major league record for strikeouts in a twin bill.
  • 1990 For the first time since 1917 (Hippo Vaughan and Fred Toney), two no-hitters are thrown on the same day when the A’s (and ex-Dodger) Dave Stewart shuts out the Jays 5-0 and the Dodgers’ Fernando Valenzuela blanks the Cardinals, 6-0.
  • 2012 In the Diamondbacks’ 9-3 victory over Milwaukee at Miller Park, Aaron Hill becomes the first modern-era player to hit for the cycle twice in one season since Babe Herman accomplished the feat with the Brooklyn Robins in 1931. Eleven days ago in Seattle, the Arizona second baseman also collected a single, double, triple, and home run in the game.
  • 2015 Joc Pederson becomes the third rookie in major league history to hit 20 home runs before July when he goes deep off Allen Webster in the Dodgers’ 10-6 loss to Arizona at Chase Field. The 23 year-old center fielder joins Wally Berger (Braves, 1930) and Albert Pujols (Cardinals, 2001) in accomplishing the feat as a freshman.

  1. Gonna be a long night for the Dodgers. Red eye to KC. Probably won’t get to hotel til 4:00 am or later.

  2. We might actually be better off if they cancel the game tonight and make it up in September.
The Dodgers and Rockies are scheduled to play a four-game series Sept 26-28 in Denver. It includes a separate admission double-header on Sept 26 (which is pretty weird, since it was originally on the schedule that way, not a makeup game). Both teams are off Sept 25. So if they can’t play tonight, it would be easy to reschedule for Sept 25.

  3. Tatis Jr. — .275
    Soto — .268
    Machado — .248
Bottom of the 9th. San Diego trailing 5-4..(corrected score). Sanchez, pinch-hitting, walks. Tatis strikes out. Soto strikes out. Machado grounds out.

    • OPS+ which better defines a batter’s productivity is Soto 157 and Tatis Jr. 142 (numbers that get you in the Hall of Fame over a career). Machado a lowly 96, but someone to be leery of in the box.

  4. Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night stays these Dodgers from scoring runs

  5. When I left Pasadena (dinner with a friend) and turned on the radio I assumed the game would be over. Instead, we were down 3-2, top of the 4th. By the time I pulled into my garage, we were up 9-3! That’s Coors Field for you!

    • All teams strike out a lot. The Gnats whined that Toronto’s Chris Bassitt wasn’t throwing strikes, but he fanned 12 of them in six innings.

    • Striking out is a feature of baseball in this day and age. Many people blame the pitchers. About the six worse in the NL K-wise, but the Dodgers hit a ton of dingers and score a lot of runs.

      • A feature I am not fond of. How much better could we be if we put the ball in play more?

        • Old friend Keibert Ruiz has one of baseball’s lowest strikeout rates – only 21 K’s in 254 ABs. He’s hitting .236 with a .675 OPS.

        • Not great to watch, but I have learned to live with it and to not judge the batters so harshly when it happens. Maybe if they mound the mound back a couple of feet, otherwise…

          • It really only pisses me off when there is a runner at 3rd with less than 2 outs.

  6. I was lucky enough to be at Fernando’s no-hitter. Still have that ticket stub, somewhere. It was my first time at Dodger Stadium.

    • My first Dodger Stadium experience was a Koufax shutout against the Astros (not yet the Trashtros) in 1966. In the second game of a Sunday doubleheader, the winning pitcher was Joe Moeller (in the days when the “fifth starter” was usually a forgotten man).

  7. Snakes and the pathetic Pads have already lost today. Gnats and Scrub Jays scoreless in the third.

  8. Pirates beat the Padres today, 5-4. San Diego had led 4-0 after 3 1/2 innings.
