White Sox at Dodgers, 7:10 PM PDT, TV: MLBN (out-of-market only), NBCSCH, SPNLA
RHP Dylan Cease (3-3, 4.38 ERA) pitches for the visiting Pale Hose and RHP Michael Grove (0-2, 8.28 ERA) gets the ball for the Dodgers.
- 1938 In the first night game played in New York City, Johnny Vander Meer pitches his second consecutive no-hitter, beating the Dodgers at Brooklyn’s Ebbets Field, 6-0. Four days ago, the Reds’ southpaw held the Braves hitless in a 3-0 victory at Crosley Field.
- 1951 The Cubs trade Andy Pafko along with Johnny Schmitz, Wayne Terwilliger, and Rube Walker to the Dodgers for Bruce Edwards, Joe Hatten, Eddie Miksis, and Gene Hermanski. The deal, which prevents the coveted ‘Handy Andy’ from going to the rival Giants, is the first of many to be made by Buzzie Bavasi, Brooklyn’s new general manager.
- 1996 In the first inning of their 6-2 victory over the Braves, the Dodgers turn their first triple play in forty-seven years. After making a running, back-to-the-plate grab of Chipper Jones’s popup to short left with runners on first and second, Juan Castro throws to second baseman Delino Deshields to double up Marquis Grissom, then the ball is relayed to first baseman Eric Karros to get Mark Lemke, who was also running on the pitch.

NPUT
Bases loaded.
And no outs.
End this thing Freddie.
So you’re doing RBI’s futuring tonight?
Doing my best.
Miller could have started tonight on four days of rest. So why did they start Grove and his nearly 9 ERA?
Remember how they limited Julio’s innings? Maybe they plan to do the same with Bobby.
Now that comment I can understand.
Probably going to get up to 150 innings as is, so no desire to push him too much more and not have him in good shape for the playoffs.
Utterly unrelated question – have you ever seen a bear in Carmel Valley?
No, we haven’t. Once in a great while a small mountain lion appears. Plenty of raccoons and squirrels. We’re out in the country, in unincorporated Carmel Valley, about a half-mile southeast of Monterey.
I was curious because there was an article that someone in San Rafael had a black bear rummaging through her garbage. I used to do a lot of hiking in Ventana and only saw rattlers.
We have squirrels, and sometimes opossums, raccoons and skunks, in our backyard in Oakland.
Black bear visited DC last week over by Catholic University, not too far from me.
Escaped from the zoo?
No, that is just down the block! A red panda escaped not too long ago from there.
When I lived in Mount Pleasant, I used to hear the bichos – especially when I walked downtown via Rock Creek. When I car camped in Asunción, I would hear roaring lions at night.
I hear the lions roar during afternoon feeding and holler monkeys at various times during the day
Would you’ve rather started him against the Gnats tomorrow? This is his regular turn, and the starting pitching is thin.
I’d rather they hadn’t started Grove again. Period. ANYONE would have been better than Grove. Call up someone from OKC or even Tulsa. Did Friedman really expect Grove to succeed tonight? Did you? This is ridiculous.
At least the Dodger offense is entertaining even if Grove isn’t
The only other healthy starter on the 40 man is Gavin Stone, who has ERA 14.40 in 10 mbl innings.
Good point. I’m just feeling bummed and disappointed.
Join the club!
There’s nobody on the 40-man who can do better right now. It’s unfortunate, but Dodgers don’t have the depth they had last year, and Grove has shown flashes of talent.
Fillies have trampled Snakes again, as old friend Kimbrel gets a 1-2-3 save (despite three pitch clock violations in the ninth).
Woo-HOO!!! Had to look on here first.
Bullpen comes thru big time.

SA-WEET!!!!
One more ball and it’s a walk off walk win.
Literally
Quite the ab here for Mookie.
Just need a productive fly ball here.
Or a WP or PB
CT wants to score the winning run here.
Broke serve! Now to consolidate the break!

Come on CT. Make this your special night.
Up to Outman.
Nope
Correction. CT3
Deluca with the productive out.
Vargas – not so much.
It will be a bummer if the Dodgers don’t score this inning.
Nice!
Phillips!
Dang it. Extra innings.
¡Miércoles!
jueves
Lunfardo
Pass the baton to Smith.
Yes, he needs all star votes
Come on Freddie.
All in all this has been a well pitched game. Hopefully it won’t go into extra innings.
Dodgers relievers are awesome
Ha! If only they were this awesome throughout the year.
CT3 with run prevention
Very fine play by Smith and CT3.
Elvis not so much
Elvis has left the field.
Thanks Vargs
Where have I seen this game before? Oh yeah – last night. Hoping for a different ending this time.
Great way to get ones 100th career homerun.
Are there any bad ways?
Perhaps off of a position player doing mop up work.
All winds up looking the same in the box score and history books, those that are available anyway.
Yep.
Apparently his first was a grand salami as well.
Pitcher put that pitch in Taylor’s wheelhouse
Lightening meet bottle.
Yee-Haw!!
Woot!
When he connects, he connects!
CT4!
CT4-by-4!!!
As I live and breath.
Bright spot of the evening – the Spiders have bitten the Pads 8-6.
Cease will now desist!
And get no decision
Grove is now warmed up and looking dominant. Will he pitch the 6th inning?
Nope.
Cease looks like a Cy Young winner tonight.
Slow start this year. Cease and Giolito both have been linked to Dodgers’ trade interests.
I’ll take ’em both.
Came in second last year in CYA voting, So…
Quite the foul ball.
Could have been a KO.
Grove is now warmed up and looking dominant.
Dingerville, dang.
He gets them down on breaking pitches, and then grooves fastballs.
