NLCS Game One, 2022

Phillies at Padres, 5:03 PM PDT, TV: FS1

RHP Zack Wheeler (12-7, 2.82 ERA) goes to the hill for the visiting Phillies. He’ll face RHP Yu Darvish (16-8, 3.10 ERA) of the Padres.

Managers being fired, the Yankees winning, the Red Sox winning, Reggie Jackson, Mark McGwire and Ed Sprague homering…there have been lots of interesting events on this day in baseball history.

ALDS Game Five, 2022

Guardians at Yankees, 4:07 PM PDT, TV: TBS

In a winner-take-all game, the pitchers for each team are obscure, at least to me. The Guardians start RHP Aaron Civale (5-6, 4.92 ERA) and the Yankees counter with RHP Jameson Taillon (14-5, 3.91 ERA).

Update: The game has been postponed till Tuesday due to rain, and the Yankees have changed their pitcher from Taillon to LHP Nestor Cortes (12-4, 2.44 ERA), who’ll be pitching on short (three days) rest for only the second time in his career. The first time didn’t go well — in 2019 he gave up four runs on six hits and came out after 2 1/3 innings.

The Guardians have not yet said whether they’ll stick with their announced pitcher Civale or perhaps call on their ace Shane Bieber, who would also be pitching on three days rest.

Today in baseball history:

“Well, I don’t know if we’re on the air or not and I’m not sure I care at this particular moment but we are. Well folks, that’s the greatest open in the history of television, bar none. We’re still here. We are still as we can well on the air, and I guess you are hearing us, even though we have no picture and no return audio. And we will be back, we hope, from San Francisco in just a moment.” – AL MICHAELS, the ABC-TV play-by-play announcer, reacting to the Bay Area earthquake.

As the Giants and A’s get ready to play Game 3 of the 1989 World Series, a massive 6.9-magnitude Loma Prieta earthquake hits the Bay Area, which will be responsible for 63 deaths. Commissioner Fay Vincent quickly postponed the Candlestick Park contest, wisely ordering the ballpark’s evacuation.

ALDS Games Three, 2022

Yankees at Guardians, 4:37 PM PDT, TV: TBS

The teams are tied at one game apiece. RHP Luis Severino (7-3, 3.18 ERA) takes the ball for the Yankees and RHP Triston McKenzie (11-11, 2.96 ERA) gets it for the Guardians.

Astros at Mariners, 1:07 PM PDT, TV: TBS

It’s win or go home for the Mariners in this game. They’ll face RHP Lance McCullers Jr. (4-2, 2.27 ERA) of the Astros and RHP George Kirby (8-5, 3.39 ERA) will try to halt the juggernaut for the Mariners.

NLDS Games Four, 2022

Braves at Phillies, 11:07 AM PDT, TV: FS1

RHP Charlie Morton (9-6, 4.34 ERA) takes the ball for the Braves in this do-or-die game against the Phillies. The Phillies counter with RHP Noa Syndergaard (5-2, 4.12 ERA).

Dodgers at Padres, 6:37 PM PDT, TV: FS1

The Dodgers’ backs are against the wall, and they hand the ball to LHP Tyler Anderson (15-5, 2.57 ERA). The Padres give their ball to RHP Joe Musgrove (10-7, 2.93 ERA).

NLDS Games Three, 2022

Braves at Phillies, 1:37 PM PDT, TV: FS1

The Braves have not yet named their starter, while the Phillies are giving the ball to RHP Aaron Nola (11-13, 3.25 ERA).

RHP Spencer Strider (11-5, 2.67 ERA) has now been named as the Braves starter. He’s very possibly the National League Rookie of the Year.

Dodgers at Padres, 5:37 PM PDT, TV: FS1

The Dodgers give the ball to RHP Tony Gonsolin (16-1, 2.13 ERA) and the Padres give it to LHP Blake Snell (8-10, 3.38 ERA).

ALDS Games Two, 2022
