LCS, Day Two

Tiger at Yankees. Anibal Sanchez for the Tigers and old friend Hiroki Kuroda for the Yankees. I’m happy for Kuroda getting a chance to pitch in the LCS, but I hope he leaves with the game tied and the Yankees blow it after he’s out.

Oh, in case you haven’t heard, the Yankees have some guy named Jeter playing shortstop. He broke his ankle in the twelfth inning of last night’s game and he’s out for the year.

Cardinals at Giants. Madison Bumgarner for the Giants and Lance Lynn for the Cardinals. The teams split their six games during the regular season.

Update: David Pinto at Baseball Musings has excellent previews of these two series. Here’s the one for the Cardinals – Giants, and here’s the one for the Tigers – Yankees.

  1. Have to discount, cuz its not against the best, but Beltran’s performance at 14 dingers in 133 post-season PAs is Ruthian (15 in 167).

  2. Thanks, guys. One of the small issues is that I can’t link to the LA Times Dodgers stories because I’m not in LA and thus not a subscriber to the paper, and I won’t pay to get past the firewall. It’s too expensive for too little value. The commenters will have to pick up the slack on those. 😉

    • Probably not a big deal because anyone else that is not a subscriber would not be able to read the link either. Following Dylan Hernandez on Twitter may be an option.

    • The reason I hang out here is because the LA times coverage of the Dodgers is horrendous. I suspect I’m not alone.

That said, I’m a subscriber, so I can link to pieces for you if you like. Best to contact me directly: lucy_is_bald@yahoo.com.

      • Gulp. That’s a heavy responsibility. 😉

If you see a worthwhile article in the morning paper that you think the rest of us might enjoy, just link to it in the comments of the current thread if you would.

Why IS the coverage so bad? Back when I lived in Westwood (’59 – ’62) the LA Times had what my 11-year-old sports brain thought were good reporters, good game stories, an excellent columnist (Murray), and a lot of other sports news besides baseball.

        • Back then, those were the only options you had, so you couldn’t really compare it to anything. But even if I had no alternatives to Plaschke or Simers, I would still think they’re blowhards. Jim Murray must be rolling over in his grave.

I’ll post anything useful from the LA Times when I can, but I don’t anticipate it will be often.

The coverage is terrible because Simers and Plaschke are inflammatory, which gets people animated, rather than good, which gets people to do nothing other than enjoy quality writing. Plus anybody who’s good gets snapped up by TV (Gammons, Olney, Kurkjian, Verducci, etc.

I’ve also heard tale that Dylan Hernandez keeps his job because he’s fluent in Spanish and Japanese, (and has a passable grasp of English) and can therefore communicate with players from Latin America and Japan. Not that the Dodgers have any Japanese players now that Kuroda is is a Yankee. But they do have plenty of Latinos.

  3. Link: Applaud what you’re trying to do here, picking up the baton
on such short and ill-timed notice.

Hope you can hold on (if doing this works well for you;-) until
trade season, or spring training, when Dodger interest should pick
    up.

    Good luck.

In mid-September, I said I hoped Girardi had the guts and permission
to sit Alex (Joe T’s “mistake” was not what the smirkocracy claimed, that
Rodriguez should never have been in the eighth spot; the mistake was playing him at all when he had better alternatives on the bench).
As an outsider, looks like his permissions are limited, and maybe his guts, too.
    Yanks needed every one of Cano’s hits coming down the stretch at better than .600;
but a predictable regression was in the cards. Add Swisher and Granderson (has anyone ever
missed more balls by what seems like a half-second or a half-foot or sometimes both than Curtis this season?), and you can see why they needed at least a chance at a live bat in
Alex’s moving slots (he’s a black hole wherever).

And a big hello to all those D fans who yearned for Alex to move west in the last few years…

  4. I refuse to watch the NLCS, which consists of two teams that do not deserve to be there. Except for the Tigres, all the remaining teams are insufferable.
