Liberal majority sweeps Canada

The Liberal Party sent to the woodshed in 2006 — and told, decisively, to stay there in 2008 and 2011 — has been welcomed back to the government side of the House of Commons, and it’s packing MPs from every part of Canada.

How about that? After nearly 10 years of the Conservatives and Stephen Harper as Prime Minister, our neighbors tossed him and his party out on their collective ears and said “Right, then. We’ll try the other guys. Oh, and none of this coalition government, either. We’ll give them a solid majority.”

Good for them. Harper was an extraction industry guy — what was good for Alberta and its oil and gas industry was good enough for the rest of the country. He was also a climate change denier who pulled Canada out of the Kyoto Accords and lobbied against attempts to address the problem.

Let’s hope the new government can reverse some of Harper’s worst actions soon.
