LHP Justin Steele (1-0, 0.75 ERA) pitches for the Cubs; Noah Syndergaard (0-1, 6.30 ERA) pitches for the Dodgers. Steele has given up just one run in 12 innings while striking out 11. After a good first outing this season Syndergaard stumbled in his second, giving up six runs on eight hits over four innings.

Tonight is the home opener for the Dodgers. The national anthem will be sung by Lupita Infante and there will be a flyover from two F-35 planes. The first pitch will be thrown by Dodgers Hall of Fame broadcaster Jaime Jarrín. Players representing each decade of Dodger Stadium’s existence will accompany Jarrín.

Reds at Dodgers, 7:10 PM PDT, TV: Bally Sports Ohio, SPNLA

The visiting Reds send RHP Luis Cessa to the mound for his first start of the year. He came up to the big leagues with the Yankees in 2016 and was traded to the Reds in mid-season last year. This will be his 20th career start; his other 137 appearances have been in relief. The Dodgers hand the ball to RHP Walker Buehler (1-0, 3.50 ERA); he went five innings in the Dodgers’ first game of the year last week.

The visiting Rockies send RHP Jon Gray (1-0, 1.54 ERA) out to face the Dodgers’ RHP Dustin May (1-0, 0.00 ERA). Gray went five innings against the Dodgers in his first start while giving up just one run, and followed that with a two-hit one run outing over 6 2/3 innings against the D-Backs. May made his first start this season eight days ago, and it was brilliant: he went six shutout innings and gave up just two hits.

RHP Jhoulys Chacin (2-1, 4.24 ERA) goes for the Brewers while RHP Ross Stripling (0-1, 3.78 ERA) goes for the slumping Dodgers. Chacin is pitching like an ace: he’s given up three or fewer runs in each of his last seventeen starts dating back to last year. Stripling had a rough outing last time out against the Cardinals when he gave up five extra base hits in five innings and got the loss.

The Diamondbacks have now beaten the Dodgers in ten consecutive regular-season games. They’ll try to continue that this afternoon, sending RHP Taijuan Walker (0-0, 3.27 ERA) out to face the Dodgers’ LHP Rich Hill (1-0, 2.70 ERA). Walker gave up three runs on six hits in five innings against the Dodgers on April 2. Hill has had a week off since his last appearance thanks to rain and off-days. He started and went four innings last Saturday against the Giants, giving up three runs on five hits in that 14-inning marathon.

The Yankees start RHP Masahiro Tanaka (13-12, 4.74 ERA) on the road (6.48 ERA), where he was markedly worse than at home (3.22 ERA) this season. His opponent will be LHP Dallas Keuchel (14-5, 2.90 ERA), who’s 5-2 with a 1.24 ERA in seven career starts against the Yankees, including a three-hit six-inning shutout in the 2015 Wild Card Game in which he got the win.

Today in baseball history:

  • 1960 At Forbes Field, Bill Mazeroski’s dramatic walk-off home run off Yankee hurler Ralph Terry breaks up a 9-9 tie, ending one of the most exciting seven game World Series ever played. Maz’s round-tripper remains the only home run ever to a win a World Series Game 7.

  • 2001 The Yankees, being down 2-0 in the best-of-five series, stave off elimination, beating the A’s and Barry Zito, 1-0, thanks to the shutout pitching by Mike Mussina and Mariano Rivera and Jorge Posada’s fifth-inning home run. Shortstop Derek Jeter backing up an errant relay throw down the first base line and flipping it home to cut down Jeremy Giambi as the potential tying run will be remembered as one of the best defensive plays in postseason history.
