Dodgers at Pirates, 4:05 PM PT, TV: SPNLA, KTLA, ATT SportsNet-PIT
This would have been Yu Darvish’s start but he’s on the (precautionary) DL, so the Dodgers have called up RHP Brock Stewart (0-0, 1.64 ERA) to make his third start of the year. He’s gone 7 2/3 innings in the previous two. He’ll face RHP Jameson Taillon (7-5, 4.64 ERA), who returned June 12 from a month on the DL after surgery and treatment for testicular cancer (yes, there have been two MLB players treated for that disease this season — the Rockies’ Chad Bettis is the other). Taillon has had a 5.40 ERA since his return, and in his last outing against the Cardinals he gave up four runs on seven hits and three walks with seven strikeouts in five innings.
Wood’s sternum injury has flared up and he’ll probably miss his next start. Bellinger is still day-to-day but took batting practice and claimed he had no ankle pain. Kershaw will make a rehab start for Oklahoma City on Saturday.
This day in Dodgers’ history:
- 1917 In a 22-inning contest against the Dodgers, Pirates’ outfielder Carson Bigbee sets a major-league record with 11 at-bats. The game was also the fourth straight extra-inning game played by Pittsburgh (total of 59 innings), which sets a National League record.
- 1965 Juan Marichal thinks Johnny Roseboro throws too close to his head returning the ball to Sandy Koufax and attacks the Dodger catcher with his bat. The Los Angeles backstop suffers cuts on the head during the 14-minute brawl. Marichal was suspended for ten days and fined $1,750.
- 2000 Hitting a solo blast and a three-run round tripper during a nine-run sixth inning of a 14-6 victory over the Expos, Dodger first baseman Eric Karros becomes the first player in the 111-year franchise history to hit two homers in an inning.
Here’s an oddity: In 1992 in the seventh inning of a Class A Florida State League contest, the Clearwater Phillies string together two walks and two sac bunts to score the game’s only run, beating the Winter Haven Red Sox, 1-0. Opposing minor league hurlers Andy Carter and Scott Bakkum do not give up any hits, making it the first professional game to be hitless in 40 years.
Lineup when available.

Dodgers on SI cover with headline asking if they’re the best team ever. Let’s hope the supposed cover jinx doesn’t bite. 😉 Story narrative more about Turner than historical team perspectives, tho.

The Dodgers’ lead is now up to 21 games over the Snakes, and 21.5 over the Rox. It’s preposterous.
and 40 games up on that team across the Bay.
It’s the Gnats’ rightful place.
The bats did it!
At intermission at the Utah Shakespeare Festival – – saw they had taken the lead before the play started and so pleased to see they won!
Have a beer to celebrate!
We are rare air at this point.
Winning percentage is now at .718 (.7177).
KJ is unreal.
Geronimo!
Woo-Hoo!!! recurring to 2,000 as an homage to A-Gon!
Kershaw wants you!
Daniel Hudson, who is pitching now, has persevered. From Wikipedia: “On July 9, 2012, Hudson underwent Tommy John surgery which eliminated him for the remainder of the 2012 season. Hudson began the 2013 season on the 60-day disabled list still recovering from the
Tommy John surgery he previously had. In a rehab start with the Double-A
Mobile BayBears on June 4, 2013, Hudson re-tore his ulnar collateral ligament.
Hudson underwent Tommy John surgery for the second time of his career
on June 18, 2013, which shut him down for the entire 2013 season.”
So has Taillon. Also from Wikipedia:
And then the testicular cancer this year.
Wow, and both pitched tonight.
Grandalerson has/have homered in every game starting last Saturday.
Cingrani for two? Sounds like an aperitif.
Two pretty good innings.
Sometimes I play Internet scrabble or Yahtzee with my wife while the game is on and am not on the board here while doing so. I am back though.
We welcome your return.
Everybody seems to have disappeared. Not even a comment on Grandal’s bomb.
After effects of the eclipse?
Grandal slams his bat in previous at bat and slams the ball with this at bat.
Some here were betting that he wouldn’t get anywhere near 20 dingers this year.
Cingrani did pretty well that inning.
Monday and Kennedy were talking about a sit-down meeting with the numbers guys and Cingrani in which he was told his slider was a lot better than he seemed to think it was and he should use it more. He told Monday (I think) that he was astonished how much they knew about his performances.
Seager should overmatch Barbato.
So he did…
Three walks for Forsythe tonight.
He always sees lotsa pitches.
Since the double to Harrison, Ravin’s looked pretty good.
The most unconventional free throw you’ll ever see, by Argentina’s Manu Ginóbili: http://www.infobae.com/deportes-2/2017/08/22/el-exotico-tiro-de-manu-ginobili-para-sumarse-al-desafio-viral-que-impulso-campazzo/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter
And the crowd goes wild!
He one-upped Rick Barry on that one.
Third bad game in a row for Dodger pitching. Hopefully the bats are up to the task.
Unless he got the word last night, Ravin flew in today from Colorado Springs, where OKC was playing, losing two hours due to time changes. I wonder what time he arrived at the ballpark.
Except that, for his biological clock, it’s two hours earlier.
Theory of relativity?
It’s 7 p.m. Mountain time, 9 p.m. PIttsburgh time, so he should have edge on those whose bedtime is approaching.
“Okay, now we’re behind, right where we wanna be. Look out now, Pirates!”
And it is still real early.
A-gon at his so-you-think-you-can-dance best.
Stewart averaged one out per 11 pitches, rounded up.
Who would be our reliever in the third inning? We went through plenty of pitchers last night.
The new guy.
Let’s see if we can get out of this inning no worse than tied.
We couldn’t.
Here’s a two-year-old article guest-written by Brandon McCarthy at ESPN about Greinke and Kershaw.
Stewart’s not putting anybody away.
A nine-pitch at bat that results in a walk isn’t helpful. He’s closing in on 60 pitches.
With nobody out in the third.
Again, needs a double play
Triple play…
Stewart just put himself away.
Bah. Lead cut in half.
Joc playing left field for the third game in a row.
He went 1-for-5 last night, a single, walked once, struck out once and scored two runs in OKC’s 17-9 win. They sure score a lot of runs in the PCL.
So far 2 singles in 10 PAs
He’s actually 2-for-9 on this trip to OKC, was 3-for-9 there earlier in the season.
2 for 9 ABs, 2 for 10 PAs
You’re right. When I grew up PA stood for the public address system in junior high.
I asked my wife what was the first thing she thought of when I said PA. She said Physician’s Assistant.
Joc strikes out in his first at bat tonight
And now his second at bat as well
And now a third time
Pitch count getting huge. Need a double play.
Now need a two pitch out.
40 pitches, two innings. Not long for this game, young grasshopper, unless you force them to swing at pitches early in counts.
Dodgers look determined to not leave the bases loaded tonight. It it good to see CT come back after a rough game last night.
Rats, poor Seager. He hit that hard.
In 12 prior MLB ABs, Stewart had one hit, eight strikeouts and no RBIs.
Stewie with the ribby.
???
With all of the players we have used this year, if the Dodgers were to give each player, which they never would do, a full share of their post season money each player would probably only receive $794.53.
They’d all get rings, though…
I would guess 40 players but if we are talking bonus money for WS play, I would have guessed a much bigger number.
I just made up a number, since we do not know how far they will go, and fringe players usually get a pro rated share.
Via Twitter:
So much for Bellinger being day-to-day.
Monday says it’s purely precautionary. It does mean they have only three bench players tonight.
I presume Stewart gets sent down after tonight’s start, for a bench player.
I wish we would just keep him up with the team, but then who would we send down? I like Stewart and want him to succeed.
He’ll be back to stay in September.
Wood will miss two starts at least so who would start in 5 days if not Stewart?
Just a decoy in the on deck circle last night?
On the board.
CT2
Here’s a nugget from Dodger Insider:
He’s allowed to make a mistake or two once a month, I guess.
I think the problem was that Doc was slow to pull him but, at this point in such a dominant Dodger season, he has the luxury of experimenting.
