Dodgers at Rockies, 1:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA, ROOTRM, MLBN (out-of-market only)
Hyun-Jin Ryu makes his first start of the season and first in two years, really. He’s had two surgeries on his pitching arm in the past two years. He had shoulder surgery in May of 2015 to repair the labrum, which kept him from pitching that season. Then in 2016 he came back and tried to pitch in July but had elbow discomfort and eventually had debridement surgery on the elbow in September. He had a minor groin injury this March but he’s recovered and posted a 2.57 ERA and 12/1 K/BB ratio across 14 Cactus League innings.
His opponent will be Kyle Freeland, a Denver native who’s making his MLB debut. He split time between Hartford of the AA Eastern League and Albuquerque of the AAA PCL last year, compiling an 11-10 record with a combined 3.89 ERA.
The Rockies have a new-to-them manager this year but a familiar one nonetheless. Bud Black managed the Padres from 2007-2015 and was fired in June, replaced for one game by current Dodger manager Dave Roberts, who’d been the bench coach.

Here’s more post-mortem data from a Gnatblog https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/774b92d3ba8692f1e8244b9c72a65d540214856a981991f79735b6ec854aa253.png
The “puking pleasure” bit reminds me of a time when my son, around 10, was unfortunate enough to have a stomach virus hit him at a local pizza parlor.
It happened near a table where some UT Martin baseball players were eating after playing MTSU here and not having a good game at all.
One immediately said: “Huh. He must have seen me pitch today.”

Gnats lose to Pads. Schadenfreude wins again.
Schadenfreude pie!

Recipe.
My IPad must not be working correctly. It shows the Rockies beat the Dodgers 2-1 at Coors Field. 12-11 I can believe, but 2-1, not so much.
Over the course of 162 games, improbable things happen.

SF grabbed the lead, but the Gnatpen has given it back.
As far as consistency so far, Dodger arms are much more impressive than the bats.
Back half of the lineup in the 9th for the Dodgers. But still loaded with good hitters…
Gnats take a 1-0 lead over the Pads, but Gnatt Cain gives it back it immediately on a dinger by leadoff hitter Margot.
Puig not having much luck today.
Coors seems a bit dormant today (so far).
So I guess it won’t be Stripling on Monday since he is coming in to pitch today.
He only threw 15 pitches, which would suggest between-starts workout. I expect he could still go on Monday.
Sure is a new world with the Utley rule. That looked fairly innocuous to me.
Blackmon grabbed Forsythe’s ankle.
Well…more like he reached out and tapped it. Just saying no one would bat an eye at that before 2 years ago.
Ryu not fooling too many this inning. Including a long, loud foul ball…
I thought he looked quite, especially v. good offensive team in that environment.
So, what do you think the Dodgers will do with the rotation while Hill is on the DL? I hope they give Wood a start. Or perhaps call up Oaks from OKC.
Roberts has said Stripling is a possibility. It may depend on how much the bullpen has to work this weekend in Denver.
I would be cool with Ross Stripling as well.
They called Josh Fields up, but he’s a reliever. Wood seems to be the logical choice.
What the heck is it with the Dodgers’ medical staff? They presumably had to sign off on Hill’s health before the F.O. offered him $48M over the next three years, and here he goes all of five innings and 75 pitches and he’s back on the DL with blisters he assured one and all he was done with.
I guess most figured he would only make around 20 or so starts anyway. So he is kinda right on schedule…
I am guessing that they looked at his fingertips before handing him a pen to sign the contract, but beyond that not sure what the medical staff might have done unless there is some sort of test for susceptibility to blisters.
The Dodgers will see the Rockies pen today. Freeland at 74 pitches through 4.
Of course, it could be Kershaw pitching at Dodger Stadium and the odds would be the other team would see the Dodgers bullpen – so clearly I am not saying much here.
Joc finally getting another hit…and off a leftie to boot.
I like it. Against the shift as well. And allows Ryu to hit this inning too.
Tied it up 1-1.
Yep. The Dodgers are playing against a Lefty.
Oh – Gameday initially made it look like Turner struck out as well.
Oh yeah – Colorado is a crazy place to play baseball for the Dodgers.
I had lousy instead of crazy but then the double play happened.
I like it. Went to a three-game series there two years ago.
Coors not the place to give away baserunners.
Too bad our guys didn’t score in the 1st, with the chance they had.
Not a pretty inning, but only 15 or 16 pitches for all that excitement.
It was basically the good, the bad, and the ugly. Glad Ryu held them to only 1 run.
Great to see Ryu back out there!
Nice to see Puig work the BB.
And SVS now too.

Madden has jungled the rotation so Dodgers face Lester in Chicago instead of a righty. I sure would like to see the “can’t hit lefties” narrative put to rest early this season.
Puig can help out on that, along with resurgence by SVS and Quique, and production out of Franklin. Lester, in particular, is just a great pitcher and tough against everybody.
If you get people on base, though, you can run wild against Lester.
Josh Fields has been recalled to replace Hill because you can always use the extra reliever in Denver. Meanwhile, here’s the Mile High Opening Day lineup: https://twitter.com/alannarizzo/status/850397462569385984
