Game 3, 2024 (Stateside Opening Day)

Cardinals at Dodgers, 1:10 PM PDT, TV: Bally Sports Midwest, MLBN (out-of-market only), SPNLA

RHP Tyler Glasnow (0-0, 3.60 ERA) goes for the hometown Dodgers; RHP Miles Mikolas (0-0, 0.00 ERA) starts for the visiting Cardinals. While this will be Mikolas’s fourth opening day start for the Redbirds and third in a row, it still seems odd that it won’t be Adam Wainwright on Opening Day; he worked six of them for St. Louis before his retirement at the end of last season.

Here’s the Dodgers’ expected Opening Day roster.

Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1999 At Havana’s Estadio Latinoamericano, the Orioles edge the Cuban National team, 3-2, thanks to Harold Baines’ eventual game-winning hit in the 11th inning. The contest marks the first time a U.S. team had played in Cuba since 1959 when the Dodgers played the Reds in two exhibition games on the island.
  • 2003 The commissioner’s office announces teams will pay tribute to the U.S. Armed Forces during the seventh-inning stretch of all home openers by having God Bless America performed. Although the song has been part of all games since the September 11th terrorist attacks, the fans will now hear the tune only in major league ballparks at the home openers, Sunday, and holidays games.

  • 2019 At Dodger Stadium, en route to a 12-5 victory over the Diamondbacks, Los Angeles slams eight home runs, surpassing the Opening Day record of six, previously shared by the 1998 Mets (vs. Expos) and 2018 White Sox (vs. Royals). The long ball barrage, which includes multiple dingers in three different innings, features round-trippers by Joc Peterson (2), Kike Hernandez (2), Austin Barnes, Corey Seager, Max Muncy, and Cody Bellinger.

Lineups when available.

  1. I didn’t know country star Brad Paisley was a die-hard Dodgers fan, but he helped the Dodgers’ brass relax while at the Nashville meetings where they signed Ohtani, serving them Pappy Van Winkle 23.

Brad Paisley stood at his door as the cars arrived, holding a glass of his most expensive bourbon, Pappy Van Winkle 23, in each hand.

One for Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. One for president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman.

“I have a feeling you guys need these tonight,” the country-music star said.

Paisley, an avid Dodgers fan, had invited a group of team officials to a barn at his 100-acre farm in Nashville. The barn houses a recording studio, a kitchen, bedrooms and a bar. Oh, what a bar.

On that night in early December, Paisley’s intention was to give Dodgers people a place to unwind away from the hustle and bustle of baseball’s Winter Meetings in Nashville. Earlier that day, Roberts told reporters the team had met with prized free agent Shohei Ohtani. Roberts’ seemingly innocent revelation created a stir. Or, as Paisley put it, “DEFCON 1.”

I wish The Athletic offered 2-3 freebies a month, but that’s not the NYT’s style.

  2. Heh. Story ends:

Just like the party at Paisley’s barn, the craziest offseason never seemed to end, raising the bar for the Dodgers even higher. As their fraught opening week in Seoul showed, the focus on this club is extreme, the stakes elevated to a new level: You do all this, you must win. The end result would be a World Series ring for all those involved — heck, perhaps even Paisley.

    “Print that,” Paisley said. “Absolutely.”

    • This FO had always been in a must win stance (though actually last year they were keeping some powder dry for the Ohtani sweepstakes).

      • I am amused at Paisley’s desire for a ring.

I own his 2009 greatest hits album, I discover. I bought it before I knew he was a Dodgers fan! His commercials with Peyton Manning for insurance were pretty funny.

  3. Ha! The Glasnow deal got its start at Paisley’s barn that night too!

The trust in the relationships between Neander, Glasnow, Friedman and Wolfe helped make the deal possible. The party at Paisley’s barn served as a catalyst, tickling the music star to no end. “It’s like a joke,” Paisley said. “Country singer has two GMs to his bar.”

  4. I was unaware that Teoscar had played for Houston, but he got traded in early 2017, before they became the Trashtros (“Basurasteriscos,” si prefieres).

  5. The nice thing about having the first 6 guys come to bat in the first inning – it means you know for sure the top of the order will be up again no later than the 3rd.

  6. Checking in from work. Like what I’ve seen from my quick glance at gameday. Except not a fan of Ohtani’s baserunning after his hit. Lol

    • I hope he recovers just enough to follow the Dodgers on TV, or in person from a seat in the pavilion.

  7. Starters going into this season:
    Glasnow
    Yamamoto
    Miller
    Paxton
    Stone

Starters going into the season last year:
    Urias
    May
    Kershaw
    Syndergaard
    Grove
Only Kershaw was left standing at the end (and he ain’t standing now!) Gotta wonder where we end up this year.
