Dodgers at Mariners, 6:30 PM PDT, TV: RootNW, SPNLA
LHP Clayton Kershaw (12-4, 2.61 ERA) pitches for the Dodgers and RHP Bryce Miller (8-5, 4.05 ERA) does the same for the Mariners.
- 1924 Cardinal first baseman Sunny Jim Bottomley goes 6-for-6, including two homers, and bats in a record twelve runs when the team beats the Dodgers at Ebbets Field, 17-3. The previous mark of 11 RBIs in one game was established in 1892 by today’s opposing Dodger manager, Wilbert Robinson.
- 1976 In the 11th inning at Veterans Stadium, Rick Joseph hits a walk-off grand slam in the Phillies’ 8-4 victory over the Dodgers. Two batters are walked intentionally by Ron Perranoski to face the weak hitting Philadelphia pinch hitter, who responds with his first career home run, which will be his only round-tripper this season.
- 1988 The Reds’ Tom Browning pitches a perfect game against the Dodgers, striking out eight and allowing only eight balls to be hit out of the infield in his 1-0 victory. Over three starts, including the perfect game, he retires 40 consecutive batters – one shy of a major league record.
On September 16, 1993 Dave Winfield got his 3000th hit. In 1996 Paul Molitor did the same. And in 2005 Youppi!, who got his start at Olympic Stadium, is named as the first official mascot of the Montreal Canadiens, becoming the first to ever switch from Major League Baseball to the NHL. The acquisition, reportedly at the cost of six figures, is made possible when the Expos leave the hairy orange arm-waving giant behind in favor of an eagle called “Screech” when they moved to Washington, D.C. to become the Nationals.

NPUT
Taylor and Kike. Wah-Oooh.
Sacre bleu
He woulda scored easily. Throw way off line.
Heyward what have you done for us lately?
AZ failed to score. 5-5. On to 13.
I have a bad feeling. This could be Kershaw’s last start of the season, perhaps ever. I will be taping and watch later.
I haven’t thought about this being Kersh’s last game. Nothing negative has been felt for tonight.
I’m not quite so pessimistic, but I do think it’s possible he’ll choose to retire after this season. Purely speculative on my part.
Magic number is 1 over the Gnats, who lost again to the Rox, but still 2 over the Snakes, who play later. Gnats have agnother opportunity in nightcap of the DH. Dodgers can clinch with a combination of win over M’s and a loss by Snakes.
Klayton doesn’t have a Texas accent.
Most consecutive playoff appearances:
14 — Atlanta Braves
13 — New York Yankees
11 — Los Angeles Dodgers

Only thing better would have been clinching the title in San Diego and celebrating on their field.
How many first timers: Outman, Miller, Sheehan, Pepiot, …
Plus all the old timers. A great balance.
Good point
Bring on the Reds/Brewers/Cubs/AZ/whoever.
The Mariners are a half-game back of the third WC spot.

I still recall before this run of success, Dodgers had never hit the playoffs 3 times in a row. Brooklyn or LA.
I think 2 in a row happened 6 or 7 times.
Now I want the Dodgers to reach 100 wins.
This.

Dodgers win!!!
NL West Champions. Wah-Ooooh!!
Woo-HOO!!!! Post season!
Will just threw his arms up.
That’s so wild.
K’mon, Kelly, the dogs need their walk!
You say that every night.
They need it every night.
Exactly.
If Dodgers win tonight, I wouldn’t be crazy sad if M’s won tomorrow.
I’m with you on that. I hope they make the playoffs.
I completely agree.
And the Trashtros to miss.
Kelly finds a new way to add drama
Hahaha.
Never a dull moment with Kelly.
Hard fought game. Has to be hard to have a lot of soft hits destroy them in the 11th.
As a former Seattleite, I empathize with my cousins who are Mariner fans.
Speaking of soft hits…
Good inning.
Kershaw would have had to pitch a lot of innings to be in line for this win. So maybe not bad he got pulled when he did.
Good point.
Kan Kelly Klose it out?
Don’t love those initials / acronym there.
Merely alliterative.
Wouldn’t “Can Celly Close it out” also be alliterative?
No, because https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZVpR3Pk-r8
Woot! Hoot!
Kiké with the tomahawk rbi!
Everyone gets an AB tonight but Barnsy.
Saving him for tomorrow I hope.
Outman will learn not to swing at those sliders.
I hope so.
One more hit. Let’s go Outie
JHay again
Sacks loaded!
Rope a dope offense
Down goes Campbell.
Let us go!!!
CT yes!
C’mon CT3.
Max is just a contact hitter…
Clearly! Lol
For the 5th time tonight, Dodgers 3 outs away from clinching the NL West.
Munce with RBI #100.
Great job, Max! RBI!
Need some hits from 3/4/5
You rang? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPMKlEwrIs8
More of a ding
Now time for Mookie/Freddie to shine?
Fans getting their money’s worth
It’s that time of year. I love it.
What a game! This is nuts.
Good thing Ford is not fast.
So glad front runner was slow
EP getting hit hard tonight.
Base hit wasn’t that hard.
The double? Yeah it kinda was
Phillips gets a blown save.
But might get the W?
Yikes.
Possivilmente.
¡Miércoles!
The announcers were crowning us, a bit too quickly.
AZ won
Now they can watch the Dodgers clinch
In eleven
If we get there.
Barely
Snakes get the win.
Snakes walk it off in Phoenix.
Dodgers chance to “win on schedule”
Snakes tie it up again.
Tie in AZ.
For the 4th time tonight, Dodgers 3 outs away from clinching.
With a runner starting an inning at second now it is almost a have to score or lose inning.
Wong enough to score a run
Now we need one more!
Yes.
Loving Wong seems right.
That’ll work.
Pretty close.
Wong looks overmatched.
Shorten up Kolten. Put the ball in play.
Wong coming up to bat next.
Need a Wong Dong.
Shaved by a pitch?
A slight trim.
Nicked him, I’d say.
Snakes have tying run on third with one out.
Been a lot of “nearly hit him, oh it did” this series.
That did not hit him.
Hit his buttons
Oh come on
CT3 with the banger! Lol
For the third time tonight, Dodgers 3 outs away from winning the division.
Are they going to use the runner at 2nd in extra innings in the playoffs?
Nope
IIRC, I think not.
France scares the heck out of me. Glad that stayed in the stadium.
Cubs winning 6-5
Yeah, but they probably need more than one, the way that game’s going.
Ehh – you never know. AZ literally scored 0 runs last inning. It could happen again.
Goodness we’ve seen some amazing pitching again tonight.
Can’t hit those pitches
Cachorros and Snakes going to the 13th.
Wow. That was some keen pitching!!
Brasier!
Very fine futuring!
Brasier wants his bubbly!
Julio puts on a show–fun to watch although scary as well
What a pitch! This game is another great one.
Yep. Some good baseball.
We may have to wait until tomorrow to clinch.
I miss Sheehan…
Vesia needs a double play
That would be good.
Sorry to see Sheehan go.
His post-season audition went well.
He left feeling good and wanting more
Clap Clap for Sheehan
I like that we don’t know the outcome of tonight yet!
On to the 12th in AZ. The game is important to both teams.
Cachorros and Snakes going to the 12th.
Time for some Mookie/Freddie magic. Please.
Well, they did disappear
You are en fuego tonight. Unlike the top of our lineup.
What a play by Moore.
Both teams playing as if it were post-season, though the game means much more to Seattle.
5-5 in AZ. Dbacks still batting in bottom 11th.
France is a tough out. Hits them hard.
Cubs winning again in AZ. Top of 11th still batting and up 5-4.
We need Hayward to bat after Hayward.
Haha. I was thinking the same thing!
He needs a double
Ha! Very clever.
JayHay double times three!
I swear he stole he Freddie’s double bat?
He’s driving the batmobile
A triple double for JHay
Sheehan!
Sheehan looking good
Sheehan! Wow.
Looks like we will get another look at Stone tomorrow. I like these kids.
He is like a Sham-Wow. He cleaned up.
I wonder if Kersh would have come back out for the 5th if they had scored?
Interesting question. I don’t think so because of the long conversation Roberts was having with him and I think we are looking at how the pitching will look in the playoffs–lots of piggyback games.
We will probably never know. I would ask Dave in the post game if I were a reporter.
This, I suspect, was an ease-him-back-into-it opportunity.
Darn!!
Robbed by Julio R!
JHay needs another double
Good futuring there.
Swept by the Rox, the Gnats are officially eliminated from the NL West.
Looking at the all time dodger wins list, I wish Sutton had all his wins as a Dodger
The Dodgers have had a tradition of letting players go before they run out of gas. Snider, Jackie, Cey, Garvey, Lopes…they all had a year or more still in them before they retired.
Kershaw settling in a bit, I think.
Nice. Will pegs JRod.
They’re hitting Kersh hard – luckily so far the timing isn’t there.
Well, Kersh is battling. Fastball at 87-89 mph. Not a good sign.
He could be the new Doug Rau.
Thought that one was gone, by France.
JayHay keeps it going!
Surprised Julio failed to catch that.
Really hard hit.
Holding my breath that entire inning – Kersh struggling for sure.
Almost had another walk. Hopefully he will get his control going soon.
Looked a little rusty.
His motion was not smooth.
If the score holds in KC, the Trashtros will have lost four games in five days to 100-loss teams.
