Wild Card Games Two, 2022

Rays @ Guardians, Game 2, 12:00 p.m., ESPN2. The Guardians lead the series 1-0.

RHP Tyler Glasnow (0-0, 1.35 ERA) of the Rays makes his third appearance of the year after Tommy John surgery. He’ll face the Guardians’ RHP Tristan McKenzie (11-11, 2.96 ERA).

Mariners @ Blue Jays, Game 2, 4:00 p.m., ESPN. The Mariners lead the series 1-0.

Seattle asks LHP Robbie Ray (12-12, 3.71 ERA) to finish the series. Toronto gives the ball to RHP Kevin Gausman (12-10, 3.35 ERA) and asks him to extend it.

Padres @ Mets, Game 2, 7:30 p.m., ESPN. The Padres lead the series 1-0.

LHP Blake Snell (8-10, 3.38 ERA) takes the Citi Field mound for the Padres and RHP Jacob DeGrom (5-4, 3.08 ERA) does the same for the Mets.

Phillies @ Cardinals, Game 2, 8:30 p.m., ESPN2. The Phillies lead the series 1-0.

RHP Aaron Nola (11-13, 3.25 ERA) pitches for the Phillies and RHP Miles Mikolas (12-13, 3.29 ERA) pitches for the Cardinals.

If you look at the collective W-L records of the pitchers in today’s games you are probably not going to be too impressed. I’m surprised at how breakeven they are.

  1. Pads had to use five pitchers and Mutts four, including deGrom (99 pitches) and their two top relievers (Díaz 28 and Ottavino 35). Should the Mutts advance, deGrom highly unlikely to make more than one start.Tomorrow’s game will be all hands on deck except, presumably, Scherzer and deGrom.

  2. Nothing against Toronto, but my hometown Rainiers – their rightful nickname! – are an inspiration.

  3. Holy cow, the Mariners have come all the way back from 8-1 to tie 9-9 in the 8th inning and the Jays’ Springer collided with another outfielder and is out of the game.

  4. It’s great to see an extra-inning game with no ghost runners. Let’s hope it happens to the Pads and Mutts tomorrow.

  5. The Athletic:

the Dodgers’ decision for Game 1 could ultimately depend on who could be available on full rest for a potential Game 5. Kershaw has pitched brilliantly. But he’s taken the mound just six times on regular rest this season as the Dodgers have exercised caution with his back — a complicating factor if they were rely on him to potentially pitch on short rest in a Game 5 scenario. And while the Dodgers have stated their preference is not to use Urías in relief outside of a winner-take-all scenario, the left-hander has notable experience being able to pitch in relief in October.

“I just want to do what I can,” Urías said in Spanish this week about his desire to pitch in Game 1.

Having Kershaw pitch Game 1 and Urías pitch Game 2 allows both to be potentially available in a Game 5 or positioned to repeat the exercise should the Dodgers advance to the NLCS.
