Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1925 In the first game of a twin bill, Robins’ (Dodgers) starter Dazzy Vance no-hits the Phillies at Ebbets Field, 10-1. The Brooklyn hurler had one-hit the team from the City of Brotherly Love five days earlier.
  • 2005 During the six-run second inning uprising by Colorado, each Dodger outfielder commits an error. The fielding of Ricky Ledee (lf), Jose Cruz Jr. (right field), and Jayson Werth (cf) contributes to the 6-4 loss to the Rockies. (The Dodgers finished 71-91 that year, in fourth place in the division. The Rockies finished last.

Also, in 1902, Johnny Evers, acquired to replace second baseman Bobby Lowe, who broke his ankle, joins shortstop Joe Tinker and first baseman Frank Chance on the Chicago infield, marking the first time the three Cubs’ infielders have played together. The legendary double play trio will be immortalized in Franklin Pierce Adams’ baseball poem, “Baseball’s Sad Lexicon,” better known as “Tinker to Evers to Chance”. (And only one of the three really had any business even being considered for induction into the Hall of Fame, as far as I’m concerned. There were a bunch of romantics or cronies on the Veterans Committee in 1946.)

  3. Stats don’t lie: Kershaw’s a heckuva pitcher.

    This was the fourth time that Kershaw started an NL West-clinching game for the Dodgers, having previously done so in 2009, ‘14 and ‘15. Across those outings, he has a 0.30 ERA (one earned run allowed in 30 innings) with 39 strikeouts and five walks.

  10. Here’s a little icing on the cake: The Dodgers haven’t allowed a run in 24 consecutive innings.

    • So true. Well-rounded. Excellent depth. So many fine players. Good camaraderie. This has been one of the most pleasurable seasons of the 58 that I have been a fan of the Dodgers and that is because of far more than their glossy record.

  23. Ferguson has appeared in 29 games this season and has been scored upon in only three of them. He was selected by the Dodgers in the 38th of 40 rounds in 2014 and was the 1149th player picked. He is 26.

  60. Muncy is now hitting precisely .200. It’s been a long slog to get there. He was batting .200 after going 1-for-5 on Opening Day. He has not ended a game since at .200 or above.

  67. If Muncy (.198) gets a hit in his first at bat today, he will be hitting an even .200. It has been quite a while since both Muncy and Bellinger have been at or above the Mendoza Line at the same time.

    • Good moves. If Treinen doesn’t return, Kahnle might be a solid replacement. If Treinen does return, Kahnle might still remain on the active roster. He had a combined ERA of 3.38 with OKC and Rancho Cucamonga in 13.1 innings this season.
