Dodgers at Giants, 6:45 PM PDT, TV: KNTV, MLBN (out-of-market only), SPNLA
RHP Corey Knebel (3-0, 3.52 ERA) starts for the visiting Dodgers, and he’ll be followed by LHP David Price (4-2, 3.88 ERA). RHP Anthony DeSclafani (11-6, 3.38 ERA) starts for the Giants.
Today in Dodgers’ history:
- 1917 Grover Cleveland Alexander goes the distance in both games of the Phillies’ doubleheader sweep of Brooklyn at Ebbets Field. In his 18 innings of work, the Philadelphia right-hander limits the Dodgers to seven hits en route to posting 5-0 and 9-3 victories in the twin bill.
- 1978 At Dodger Stadium, Lee Mazzilli becomes the first Mets player to hit a home run from each side of the plate in a game. The center fielder’s first and seventh inning blasts, respectively hit off southpaw Tommy John and right-hander Charlie Hough, pace the last-place club to an 8-5 victory.

At least we made them extend their bullpen.
NPUT
Where in the heck did we come up with this Vasquez guy? Surely we could have found something better. Geez.
In our backyard
Except with that strikeout, he keeps us in the game
In a tough situation, he didn’t do so badly.
Dodgers are in a scoring slump. Since winning 9-0 14 games ago, the Dodgers have scored 5 runs or less in the next 13 games. That is by far the longest stretch this season without scoring at least 6 runs or more. The next longest stretch was 7 games.
Of course they are 10-3 in those 13 games having scored 46 runs (3.5/game) and only allowed 37 (2.8/game).
But if it has felt like a while since the Dodgers had a big outburst and won a laugher – it’s because it has been.
And yes I realize that 5 is an arbitrary number here.
Offense has been pathetic.
The Gnats are COVID-friendly, and their concessions workers don’t like that. https://twitter.com/JohnSheaHey/status/1434002502874062852?s=20
Yes! Stranded the leadoff double.
It was a cheap hit.
So cheap – but could have proved to be costly.
Full credit for working out of it, but he was fortunate to face the pitcher with fewer than two outs.
Gasarol is not the guy I want in a high leverage situation in the playoffs.
I think he has great potential, but he’s got lots to learn.
Agreed. He’s a baby.
Blue squeezes Bickford. Ruf walked on two strike threes.
The last pitch to him was actually just outside the zone.
Meanwhile, as the Atléticos take the lead in Toronto (tweeter is a Swede). https://twitter.com/kenarneson/status/1433974615122976768?s=20
Waiting for Winnipeg Dave to enlighten us.
Pathetics urr I mean Athletics lose a wild one.
It was appalling. While I’m not really an A’s fan, I want them to do well.
I’m not really a fan of Toronto. I cheered against them in 1993 for example.
Were you an Expos fan? Are the Scrub Jays blacked out on MLBTV in Manitoba?
I did like the Expos more than the Jays, although I didn’t mind the mid-80’s Toronto team.
I honestly never check to see if I can watch them on MLBTV. But yes, I imagine they are blacked out.
They do have interesting talent.
True. A team on the rise in a tough division. Need more pitching.
Tonight is on broadcast TV – no blackout – so I can actually watch it. Still, the TV will be muted because Kruk and Kuip are the worst broadcasting team in the majors. Pure homer hacks.
I am listening to Jaime instead.
Oh my goodness, that’s a terrible throw, especially to a non regular at 1st base
Phillips pitched really well. If Bryant gets rung up as he should have, we’re still playing.
Well that kinda stinks.
I like our chances with Urias and Buehler coming up.
I do too.
But only if our bats wake up
C’est La Vie.
Rats.
Bad throw, inexperienced 1B.
Bad combination.
I thought his foot got back to the bag.
Routine?
Should have been.
New York loves the Gnats.
Of course it ends like that
Not quite yet
You’ve got to be kidding.
It’s still glimmering
One more out, s’il vous plais.
My goodness, they got him at home.
Where have we seen that before?
Prior to Phillips – get this next guy out. And if necessary the one after that as well.
Throw strikes, don’t get cute, don’t get behind,
Phillips gave in
He had him struck out.
SF getting lotsa breaks on checked swings.
He swung
There is a glimmer of hope
Glimmer getting dimmer.
Double Play!!
Yes please.
Need some help from San Fran here. Bad hitting or bad base running. Or both.
The slump continues.
They should IBB first guy up
May as well.
I’d be thrilled if he hets bat on ball
As I suspected
Oh boy.
Need a hero.
Hungry?
Like who ever bats after Taylor
Phillips
Déjà vu
Not again! ¡Miércole!
Not good.
Drat it!
Send it to the water Will.
Clutch
Trea might have scored. Justin not so much.
SEEEEEGS!!
Don’t stop hitting now Corey.
He didn’t.
This thing goes to 11.
In a key part of the season, its Phillips vs Casali
Last pitcher standing (i wonder if he gets to bat in the 11th)
If his turn comes up, Dodgers should be well ahead.
He’s 4th up
Three home runs later?
So 4 runs later.
Nice AB by Yaz!
Taylor should have thrown that to 2nd.
Returned that favor to the Giants in the top on the inning
Good throw woulda had the Poseur. Missing Bellinger there.
Saw that one coming.
Here we go
Fasten your seat belts
Tray tables and seat backs in the full upright position.
In 3 outs, the Giants will be down under and one back
I’m down under
Yep, I borrowed from you
Holy cow, this got exciting.
IT joke? The Asterisks have a pinch-runner named Siri.
https://twitter.com/ericstephen/status/1434023821317603331?s=20
Free base! Now drive him home Mookie!
Mookie, Mookie, lend me your comb and I will sweep the Giants. Had to edit
What, no 77 Sunset Strip fans?
Close the door Barns.
Didn’t close it but he did get on.
Will it be enough. Who plays 1st base if it goes to the 11th? Maybe Seager 1st, trea ss and Barnes at 2nd?
Or JT to first and one of those other guys to 3rd.
Barnes will be somewhere that’s for sure.
In real baseball, that’s 2 out and no one on. But I guess we will take it!
2-1.
Albert woulda scored on that one.
Albert sprints!
Trea would have scored
One more of those and he can get some oxygen when he gets back to the bench!
Nope.
Couldn’t wait that long.
Lol. Yep.
The Poseur, who was hitting around .330 at the All-Star break, has fallen below .300.
Sadly, Belli says “hold my beer”.
Extras. Albert on 2nd to start.
That takes away the sacrifice bunt
Never a doubt
Whew…
18 pitches, 5 strikes?! Yikes. But 2 outs so he can still do this.
Which Jansen is pitching?
Sad Kenley.
I wish sad Kenley could be exorcised.
Me, too. This is torture when he pitches like this.
He’s hitting the corners now, and not getting the calls.
Maybe with a raised thread he is.
If he hadn’t been wild early, he gets those calls.
Maddening. But KJ is off tonight for sure.
That was quite the string of hitters the Dodgers put together in the top of the ninth.
Thanks, Belt!
Almost a DP.
Terrible baserunning.
Too bad on the double clutch before the throw over to first also.
Settle down, Kenley!
Free base.
Hopefully free baseball still to come.
Not even close on any of those pitches.
Now only Barnes on bench
Only bad thing about this is if it goes to extras, it’s Pujols on second instead of Belli. Big difference in speed.
Stupid extra inning rule.
OK, Uncle Albert!
Hit a HR and get yourself some hugs Albert.
Any hit will get hugs
All right
WOOT!!
Let’s go!
That’s better!
What a cluster ____.
Smith screws up.
Seager should have run back towards second.
I’d be happy with a single here
If we are good enough
It would be so nice to steal this game.
Ok Will. Do your thing.
Let’s go Corey.
He heard you!
JT fails to bounce it!
Let’s see if he now fails to bounce one over the outfield fence
And Max actually caught it!
Actually, Bellinger caught it.
Right. My bad.
At least Corey with two thirds of our total hits will get to bat again
Let’s hope it’s still only 1-0 when he does.
Giving up equal first way to easily
Three bloody hits!
Not gonna cut it.
Why didn’t Doc pinch hit Pollock for Belli? At least get a righty on the lefty pitcher.
Dodgers get away with another bad bounce throw by Turner.
You are kidding me right. No way Max shouldn’t have caught that.
Balls thrown in the air get there faster, and are far easier to handle.
The ball got there in plenty of time and as Bob pointed out a few nights ago, bounce throws can be more accurate.
You always risk a short hop, and that’s what happened.
I thought that at first too but the replay showed it was a full hop. Right at chest level for Max.
But let’s just agree to disagree on this one.
One pitch later – no big deal.
Did he catch that?
Yes, in my opinion.
Mine too.
Close, though.
Actually on second look…
DeSclafani has been much better tonight than the last few times vs the Dodgers.
Hopefully he cracks here this inning.
Brewster pitches out of it.
Unlucky there.
Got out of that pretty cheaply.
Coulda been much worse.
Whew!!
Minimize the damage guys.
Nice play by JT, now to face the most loathsome Gnat.
Had him 0-2.
A little ground ball DP would be great right now.
Tough spot here for Phil.
Some hearty crowd noise in San Fran.
Pretty muted on the Spanish-language radio.
Pretty muted on the Spanish-language radio.
Terrible AB by Corey.
David Price is hurt, so tonight will be a bullpen game. So it will be also for the Gnats, who are starting Desclafani. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/b934eb8d4d0785941ecc00e1dd41ee26d9660f846aa1c552cdbe3bc8952606e4.png

Kill the umpire? Really? https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2021/08/30/invasion-of-the-robot-umpires
Hmm. I don’t think I want those robo-umps.
