Flacking gold

You know, there’s a lot of BS spun in the name of public relations every day in this country, but this line almost has to get a gold medal: “Brinker told the Wall Street Journal that the reorganization had nothing to do with the Planned Parenthood maelstrom.”

Brinker, you may recall, is the founder of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation. The occasion for that statement was her announcement that she’s stepping down as CEO of the organization, just as its president announced her departure is scheduled for next month. In addition, two board members announced their departures, also in September.

Right. I’m sure the fact that the Komen decision to defund Planned Parenthood back in January of this year and the resultant backlash meant nothing; these people decided they’d all quit at the same time to go do archaeological digs in their back yards or something. One affiliate says

“Our fundraising is down from previous years, we’ve seen about a 30 percent decrease in fundraising altogether,” says Brad Young, communications manager at Komen’s North Carolina affiliate.

Move along, nothing to see here.

  1. The people we know who were most active in the runs are the least forgiving toward this woman. They felt betrayed. And we don’t blame them.
