Game 146, 2016

Dodgers at Diamondbacks, 6:40PM PT, TV: SPNLA, FS-A

LHP Rich Hill (12-3, 1.80 ERA) makes his fourth start for the Dodgers and his first since he was pulled after seven innings of perfect baseball against Miami on September 10. Hill has yet to give up a run in 19 innings pitched as a Dodger. He’ll face RHP Archie Bradley, (6-9, 5.10 ERA). Bradley lasted only three innings his last time out, giving up five runs to the Giants on September 10.

News of note:

The Dodgers have won 10 of 15 against Arizona this season, including four in a row.

[snip]

Joc Pederson has feasted on D-backs pitching this season with a .385 average, six home runs and 10 RBIs in 10 games. He has two of those home runs against Arizona’s starter on Thursday, Archie Bradley.

Game 141, 2016

Dodgers at Marlins, 4:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA, FS-F

Lefty Rich Hill (11-3, 1.94 ERA) makes his third start for the Dodgers. In his first two he’s thrown 12 scoreless innings. He’ll face RHP Tom Koehler (9-10, 3.87 ERA), who hasn’t won since August 9 but whose last outing was six shutout innings against Cleveland on September 4.

Personnel move:

“Manager Dave Roberts said Ethier will get an occasional start, but with the club’s outfield depth, Ethier will mostly be used coming off the bench as a late-innings pinch-hitter.”

Lineup:

Hmm. Utley gets the day off and Kendrick is back at 2B for the first time in a while. His LF slot will be taken by Puig.

Game 135, 2016

Padres at Dodgers, 6:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA, FSSD

The Dodgers ask lefty Rich Hill (10-3, 2.09 ERA) to make his second start for them. Lingering blister troubles kept him off the mound for a month after he was acquired at the trade deadline. He’ll face RHP Luis Perdomo (7-7, 5.84 ERA). The rookie pitched his first complete game his last time out and got six double plays in the game to help him do it. That shouldn’t have been a surprise; his ground ball rate is 60%, the highest in the NL.

Kershaw is pitching a three-inning or 50-pitch rehab start for Rancho Cucamonga today.

Games 132 and 133, 2016

Dodgers at Rockies, Game One, 12:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA, ROOTRM

Game Two, 5:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA, ROOTRM

The postponement of Tuesday’s rainout till today means the Dodgers will pitch Ross Stripling (3-5, 4.13 ERA) in the opener and Rich Hill in the nightcap at 5:10PM PT. Stripling will face Tyler Anderson, who was the scheduled starter on Tuesday before the rainout. Hill will face rookie Jeff Hoffman, (0-2, 8.10 ERA).

Game 132, 2016

Dodgers at Rockies, 5:40PM PT, TV: SPNLA, ROOTRM

It’s a battle of lefties tonight. The Dodgers send Rich Hill (10-3, 2.09 ERA) out for his second start since being acquired at the trade deadline, and the Rockies counter with Tyler Anderson (4-5, 3.69 ERA). In his first outing for the Dodgers Hill went six scoreless innings against the Giants; in his last start Anderson gave up two runs in five innings against the Brewers.

Game 126, 2016

Giants at Dodgers, 7:10PM PT, TV: ESPN, SPNLA, CSBA

Rich Hill is scheduled to make his first start for the Dodgers since his acquisition at the trade deadline three weeks ago. He’s had blister troubles, and if you wonder how those are treated in the big leagues, read on. Mike Petriello has some excellent analysis of Hill’s “stuff.”

Hill is 9-3 with a 2.25 ERA, all with Oakland before the trade. His opponent will be Johnny Cueto, who’s 14-3 with a 2.90 ERA.

Winning Game One of this series means even if the Giants come back and win the next two games the Dodgers are still in first place, albeit tied. I like that better than tied now after a loss.

Happy news from and for the Segedin family.

Game 115, 2016

Pirates at Dodgers, 7:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA, ROOTPIT

I’m beginning to think that Rich Hill is a phantom. His blisters preclude him from starting again today, so the Dodgers ask rookie RHP Ross Stripling (3-3, 3.79 ERA) to step in. He’ll face the Pirates’ Ivan Nova (8-6, 4.83 ERA), who will be making his second start for them after coming over from the Yankees at the trade deadline. His first one was successful: he went seven innings and gave up just three runs in a win over the Reds last Saturday.

Josh Reddick hasn’t gotten off to a great start with the Dodgers, but he’s 5-for-13 with two homers against Nova in his career.

Game 111, 2016

Red Sox at Dodgers, 4:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA, NESN, MLB Plus free game

The Sox ask David Price (9-7, 4.30 ERA) to win the rubber match of this series, and the Dodgers ask Brandon McCarthy (2-2, 2.76 ERA) to keep him from doing so. This will be Price’s third start of this 11-game West Coast road trip for the Red Sox; he’s pitched 15 innings, given up only four runs and gotten two no-decisions out of it. Today was supposed to be newly-acquired Rich Hill’s first start for the Dodgers but the blister which landed him on the 15-day DL hasn’t yet healed, so McCarthy will pitch with normal rest. He hasn’t made it past the fourth inning in either of his last two starts.

Lineup when available.

Segedin? Who’s he? Oh. To make room on the 40-man roster Trayce Thompson has been moved to the 60-day DL.

Game 107, 2016

Dodgers at Rockies, 5:40PM PT, TV: SPNLA, ROOTRM

Rookie righthander Brock Stewart (0-1, 9.00 ERA) spot-starts for the Dodgers, filling in for the newly-acquired Rich Hill and the possibly-injured Bud Norris, not to mention the disabled Hyun-Jin Ryu and Brett Anderson and Clayton Kershaw. In his first and only other MLB start he went five innings, gave up five runs, struck out seven and walked two. He’s been very good in the minors, posting a 1.80 ERA across Double-A and Triple-A and has a 3.00 ERA in four Triple-A starts since he went back down after that MLB start. He’ll be opposed by the Rockies’ rookie lefty Tyler Anderson, (3-3, 3.33 ERA), who’s had six quality starts in his first nine in the big leagues. He hasn’t given up a dinger in his last 22 1/3 innings.

Personnel news: Stewart, Fields and Urias up; Toles and Josh Ravin down (the latter after reinstatement from the restricted list for PED usage; he also recuperated from broken bone surgery while out); Coleman (right shoulder fatigue) and Liberatore (left elbow inflammation) to DL. And the biggest and most unpleasant news of all: Kershaw moved to 60-day DL. Eligible to return August 27.

Lineup when available.

Game 106, 2016

After yesterday’s sturm und drang about Yasiel Puig and his status — not to mention the incorrect verb used by Ken Rosenthal since it’s hard to “storm off” if you aren’t at the location you ostensibly left angrily — today we’re back to baseball. Puig is apparently on his way to Oklahoma City to work on his swing, although the team has said nothing publicly yet. Here’s CBS Sports’ attempt to explain what went on.

Dodgers at Rockies, 5:40PM PT, TV: SPNLA, ROOTRM

Brandon McCarthy (2-1, 2.39 ERA) is coming off his worst start since his season began several weeks ago; he lasted only four innings against the Rays on the 27th of July. His opponent will be Jon Gray (7-4, 3.94 ERA), who’s made three starts against the Dodgers in his career, two this season, and has struck out 22 in 15 2/3 innings, but he is 0-2 with a 5.74 ERA.

The Dodgers announced they’ve optioned Puig, Stripling and Fields to OKC and activated new acquisitions Jesse Chavez and Josh Reddick. They’ve put their other new pitcher, Rich Hill, on their 15-day DL, but he’s eligible to be activated on Thursday, August 4.
