Game 39, 2017

Dodgers at Giants, 7:15 PM PT, TV: SPNLA, NBCS-BA, MLBN (out-of-market only)

RHP Brandon McCarthy (3-0, 3.10 ERA) takes on RHP Matt Cain (2-1, 4.54 ERA) at AT&T Park this evening. We learn now that the unspecified injury which put McCarthy on the 10-day DL was a dislocated shoulder. He threw a 4-inning 60 pitch simulated game on Wednesday and is “chomping at the bit,” says his manager Dave Roberts. Cain did well in April, posting a 2.30 ERA in five starts, but has struggled so far in May, giving up 12 runs (11 earned) in two starts spanning 8 1/3 innings for an 11.88 ERA.

Today in Dodgers history:

  • 1919 After 12 scoreless innings at Ebbets Field, the Reds score 10 runs in the 13th inning to beat Al Mamaux and the Dodgers, 10-0. Cincinnati starter Hod Eller, who tossed a no-hitter in his previous start, is the beneficiary of the blowout.
  • 1956 Sal Maglie, obtained on waivers by Cleveland last season from the Giants, is shipped to the Dodgers for a hundred dollars after impressing Brooklyn in an exhibition game. The ‘Barber’ will post a 13-5 record along with a 2.89 ERA for the eventual NL Champs, finishing second to teammate Don Newcombe in the balloting for both the Cy Young and MVP awards.

The Dodgers made room for McCarthy by optioning Brett Eibner back to Oklahoma City. Poor guy. He hits the longest HR any Dodger has this year, and that’s the recognition he gets.

Game 20, 2017

Dodgers at Giants, 7:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA, NBCS-BA+, MLBN (out-of-market only)

Lefty Hyun-Jin Ryu (0-3, 5.87 ERA) pitches for the Dodgers, and his record shows he’s having trouble getting back to his form of two years ago before surgeries. He’s given up six HRs in 15 1/3 innings and opponents are hitting .306 against him. RHP Matt Cain (1-0, 3.31 ERA) was thought to be mostly done as a starting pitcher and his opening start seemed to reinforce that belief, but then he turned around and had two very good outings. He’s given up 3 HRs in 16 1/3 innings and his opponents’ BA is a paltry .238.

Lineup when available.

Game 5, 2016

Dodgers at Giants, 7:15PM PT, TV: SPNLA, NBC-BA

Ross Stripling makes his debut against the most bitter rival the Dodgers have in the rival’s home park. Welcome to the big leagues, kid! He’ll face Matt Cain, who’s fallen from previous stardom due to elbow and forearm injuries to the #5 starter’s spot in the Giants’ rotation (which is still better than Tim Lincecum, who hasn’t thrown a pitch since June of last year and is now a free agent, rehabbing from hip surgery).

Puig and Gonzalez have eight and seven hits respectively for the Dodgers in this young season; Seager and Utley have six, Pederson has five. The pitching’s been excellent until Thursday, when not only Wood but the bullpen (saving Louis Coleman, who threw 1 1/3 innings of hitless ball) failed, Wood after four good innings.

Lineup when available.

Carl Crawford gets a day off for the second day in a row.

Game 38, 2014

Giants at Dodgers, 1:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA, Fox Sports 1

The Giants send out Matt Cain and his 0-3, 4.35 ERA to face the Dodgers’ Zack Greinke and his 5-1, 2.35 ERA. Greinke went only three innings in his last outing, but that’s because the rains came and halted the game for three-plus hours. In those innings he gave up two runs which turned out to be enough to saddle him with his first loss of the year. This is Cain’s first start since he missed two with a cut on his index finger, suffered when he tried to catch a knife that fell while he was making a sandwich. There’s no word on what kind of sandwich he was making that required such a sharp knife; probably not peanut butter.

Puig has a nine-game hitting streak which equals the longest of his career. In less cheery news, the Dodgers opened the series with the worst fielding percentage in the league and ranked third in most runners left on base. Given that, it’s amazing they’re still above .500.
