Game 95, 2016

Dodgers at Nationals, 4:05PM PT, TV: SPNLA, MASN 2, MLB.TV free game

Scott Kazmir (7-3, 4.52 ERA) tries to improve on his last outing when he went only three innings and threw 85 pitches. His opponent will be the Nats’ #5 prospect (per MLB.Pipeline.com), RHP Reynaldo Lopez, who’s making his MLB debut this evening. He put up a 3.19 ERA in 16 starts in the minors this season.

The Dodgers activated Joc Pederson from the DL on Tuesday, so expect to see him back in center field. The Nationals expect to get Daniel Murphy back into their starting lineup. Also, the Dodgers have put Fein and Ryu on the 15-day DL.

Game 94, 2016

Dodgers at Diamondbacks, 1:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA, FS-A

The Dodgers ask Kenta Maeda (8-6, 2.95 ERA) to win the rubber match of the series. The last time he faced the D-Backs in Chase Field he was hit on the leg by a line drive off Paul Goldschmidt’s bat and had to leave the game. He’ll face Robbie Ray (4-8, 4.81 ERA). Ray is on a downslope; he’s lost three of his last four starts and hasn’t won since June 17. He has pitched reasonably well against the Dodgers in his career, putting up a 2.40 ERA in five career starts against them.

Not that we need to be reminded, but

Goldschmidt’s homer on Friday night was his 24th against the Dodgers since he debuted on Aug. 1, 2011. That’s 11 more than any other player against L.A. in that span. His 71 RBIs against the Dodgers are also the most in that stretch.

Lineup:

This will be Puig’s first start in center field since the last game of the 2014 season. In possibly related news, Joc Pederson is expected to make his final rehab start with OKC today and be reactivated for Tuesday’s game in DC.

Game 92, 2016

Dodgers at Diamondbacks, 6:40PM PT, TV: SPNLA, FS-A

Bud Norris (4-7, 3.98 ERA) makes his third start for the Dodgers. Since he’s 0-7 with a 13.92 ERA in his career against Arizona and is 0-4 at Chase Field he seems an odd choice for Manager Dave Roberts, but maybe he’s got a hunch. Norris will face Patrick Corbin (4-7, 4.94 ERA), who hasn’t made it past the sixth inning in any of his last three starts and has a 6.91 ERA in those games to boot. He’s a little better career-wise against the Dodgers, posting a 3.83 ERA in 11 games.

This is the first of thirteen games these two teams play against one another in the remainder of the season.

Joc Pederson is headed for Oklahoma City for a rehab assignment. Clayton Kershaw threw 60 pitches in the bullpen Wednesday. Other DL denizens’ news at Jon’s place.

Lineup when available.

Game 81, 2016

Dodgers at Brewers, 11:10AM PT, TV: SPNLA, MLBN (out-of-market only)

It’s a battle of righthanders as the Dodgers’ Kenta Maeda (6-5, 2.91 ERA) goes against the Brewers’ Zach Davies (5-3, 3.74 ERA). This will be the last time the two teams meet this year, right at the Dodgers’ halfway point of their season. Maeda faced the Brewers on June 19 and gave up just one run in 6 1/3 innings but got no decision. Davies faced the Dodgers on June 17 and gave up just one run in seven innings, also getting no decision.

Joc Pederson is unlikely for this game due to his sore shoulder. Meanwhile Kershaw has gone on the 15-Day DL. Here’s the interesting part:

Kershaw had been receiving treatment for the condition for two weeks, but reported more discomfort Monday after losing to the Pirates on Sunday night.

Lineup when available.

Game 80, 2016

Dodgers at Brewers, 5:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA, FSWI, MLBN (free game)

Brock Stewart started the season in Class A (Advanced) with the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. During his rise to AAA the 24-year-old righthander has compiled a 1.47 ERA and a 99:14 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 14 starts. He’ll be opposed by 31-year-old rookie Junior Guerra, who’s 4-1 with a 3.67 ERA. He faced the Dodgers in LA and had the worst start of his season in which he gave up five runs on five hits but came away with a no-decision.

Here’s a stat which may surprise:

Coming into the series, both teams ranked in the top three for percent of wins via comeback this season. With 19 out of 34 (56 percent), the Brewers ranked second, and the Dodgers were right behind, winning 23 of their 42 games (55 percent) via a comeback.

Lineup:

No surprise, Pederson is not in the lineup after his wall-banging catch last night.

Game 63, 2016

Dodgers at Giants, 4:15PM PT, TV: Fox

The Dodgers send Scott Kazmir (5-3, 4.46 ERA) to do battle with Jeff Samardzija (7-4, 3.33 ERA). Kazmir has made two starts against the Giants this season and they haven’t been good: he’s given up 10 runs in eight innings in the two games. In Samardzija’s last start he went five innings against the Cardinals and gave up six runs on nine hits, four of them HRs.

Puig goes to Lake Elsinore Rancho Cucamonga to begin rehab on Monday. The Dodgers want him to shorten his swing a bit while there, hoping to reduce his rotation and “eliminate some of the strain he exerts.”

Lineup when available.

I just noticed that in this lineup all members of the infield hit first. Then Roberts goes off script and has C Yasmani hitting between CF Joc and LF Howie. Come on, Doc, symmetry is important!

Game 61, 2016

Rockies at Dodgers, 7:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA, ROOT SPORTS

The rubber match of the three-game series features Kenta Maeda (5-3, 2.84 ERA) for the Dodgers and Chris Rusin (1-4, 4.62 ERA) for the Rockies. Maeda has allowed but one run in his last 11 1/3 innings over two starts, and in Rusin’s last start he went seven innings and gave up three runs.

Remember the kerfuffle at the Mets’ stadium when the Dodgers wanted to mark the outfield in order to position their players out there, and the Mets said “Holy Tris Speaker, NO!” Here’s a discussion and an exhortation for MLB to recognize that this is the 21st century and technology is here to stay.

Lineup when available.

Now this is a weird lineup. Seager out, Utley out, Pederson out. I’m all for giving guys days off, but three including two of your bigger producers in the same game?

Game 59, 2016

Rockies at Dodgers, 7:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA, ROOTS TV

Two righthanders go at one another tonight: Tyler Chatwood (6-4, 2.99 ERA) for the Rockies and Mike Bolsinger (1-2, 4.20 ERA) for the Dodgers. Chatwood gave up 5 runs in 5 2/3 innings against the Reds in his last start, but he’s been solid in his previous appearances. Bolsinger’s season didn’t really start until May; he suffered an injury to his oblique muscle in late March just as he’d earned the fifth spot in the Dodgers’ rotation. His first outing of the year wasn’t real good but he’s pitched better and better with each subsequent start.

Lineup when available.

Hmm. No Joc in the lineup. Probably just a day off, but one wonders.

Game 43, 2016

Dodgers at Padres, 7:40PM PT, TV: SPNLA, FSSD

Scott Kazmir (3-3, 4.89 ERA) hopes to continue the pitching which got him within an out of a complete game win last time out. He’ll face Christian Friedrich (0-1, 1.50 ERA), who made his Padres debut last week, going six innings and throwing 116 pitches while walking six. He’s a callup from AAA El Paso to replace Andrew Cashner and his balky hamstring.

Dodger manager Dave Roberts says Adrian Gonzalez won’t start but will be able to pinch-hit tonight and get back in the starting lineup tomorrow.

Danger, Will Robinson! Matt Kemp is hitting .317/.371/.463 in 89 plate appearances against the Dodgers.

Lineup:

Pederson sits tonight, presumably because Friedrich is left-handed.

May 04

Game 28, 2016

Dodgers at Rays, 4:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA

Alex Wood (1-2, 4.82 ERA) goes against Drew Smyly (1-3, 2.60 ERA). The two lefties are both coming off good starts their last times out.

Manager Roberts says we should expect to see Justin Turner at DH and someone other than Pederson in CF. He thinks Smyly’s rising fast ball might be tough on the young lefthanded hitter.

Lineup when available.
