1915 Pirates' third baseman Honus Wagner reaches Robins hurler Jeff Pfeffer for a grand slam in the eighth inning, helping Pittsburgh beat Brooklyn at Forbes Field, 8-2. The inside-the-park round-tripper makes the 41-year-old infielder the oldest player to hit a home run with the bases full, a record that will last until 1985.
1996 After a mild heart attack last month, Tommy Lasorda, the 68-year-old Dodger manager, announces his retirement due to his health. The future Hall of Fame skipper was named the National League Manager of the Year in 1983 and 1988, leading Los Angeles to four pennants and two World Series championships during his 21 seasons at the helm.
Nice win yesterday. We really needed it.
Bucs bit Snakes with ninth inning comeback and four in tenth, then hung on. Gnats managed to hang onto lead over Rox. Dodgers gain a game each on SD and AZ, and SF doesn't matter anyway.
Orioles burn Fryers 8-5. According to Gameday. this is how it ended: "Jurickson Profar grounds into unassisted double play, shortstop Gunnar Henderson. Tyler Wade out at second. Jurickson Profar out at first." Huh?
Friars but yeah that’s good.
Robes v wings
Must be why the Padres challenged. Lol
Play overturned on Fryers' appeal, now 8-6 with two out.
Yeah I saw that the Friars won their appeal.
White Sox are 27-81. They have played 2/3 of their season and have lost exactly 75% of their games. On pace to win 40 or 41 and lose 122 or 121.
Steal second Lux
Generous strike zone for mediocre pticher.
Ha! Got to say Doc never flinches from tempting fate.
Apparently Vargas could get a start at 3rd any day now
If Outman can adjust his swing so that he stops missing the pitch high in the strike zone and umps stop calling pitches wide of the strike zone against him, he should get back to where he was at the beginning and end of last year. Roberts also has to stop playing with the outfield and keep Hernandez, Outman, and Pages on the field. Heyward has been really slumping.
Thank you James.
Babe Barnes, no one can stop him!
I think I heard that the cumulative MLB batting average is .243. Barnes might get there.
Hit one out man!
Like that!
Given Ryan, Wrobleski, and Knacks performance, I find it difficult to think the Dodgers would be better off with Skabol or Crochet by the time the playoffs begin.
Depends on the cost, of course. Think all three have innings limitations, though.
None of those rooks, especially Wrobleski, has pitched very much. He's thrown only 60 innings in AA and 10 in AAA after spending all of 2023 in High-A. Promising, but not definitive.
I'm thinking a few of the pitchers on the IL will be back and those three can rest more going forward.
Hadn’t realized Ryan cost us Beaty.
High price to pay…
A good trade and here is another one==Jackson Ferris and minor league outfielder Zyhir Hope from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for right-handed pitcher Yency Almonte and infielder Michael Busch.
Busch has done well for Cubbies, but wasn't going to displace Freddie.
Roberts apparently sending Ryan back out for the 6th even though his pitch count is already his highest for a game.
He's only pitched one other game, and he's been efficient today.
Both scoreless, but River more efficiently than Spaghetti.
Excellent!
Nice pitch.
I bid you adieu. I am taking a baseball mental health day.
Beautiful curve for called third.
41 strikeouts in 20 innings in Houston, including 5 in 2 innings today. Have we no batting coaches?
They were saying that they have achieved (?) some sort of franchise record in that department. Two of our lesser K guys not in the lineup.
Babe Barnes up.
Doctor DP!
What is Spencer Arrighetti's nickname?
Ha’ Spaghetti!
MLB bios most often show silly fabricated nicknames, but this one would make sense.
Objects in mirror are closer than they appear. Dodgers are reeling and the Padres are surging.
6-3 since the All Star break is not reeling. Friars have done better, but had the benefit of playing a series against the Nats.
Today in Dodgers History
July 28th
1991 Expos right-hander Dennis Martinez pitches a perfect game, defeating Los Angeles 2-0 at Dodger Stadium. Ron Hassey becomes the first backstop ever to catch two perfect games, as he also was behind the plate on May 15, 1981, when Indian hurler Len Barker faced 27 batters, beating the Blue Jays, 3-0.

The trade deadline will be over before the Dodgers play again.
Who will be gone and who will arrive?
To get anyone, we are likely to lose at least one of our four rookie starters.
Last week it would have been at least 3 of the four rookie starters
Best possible acquisitions would be Mookie, Muncy, and Freddie
Woo-HOO!!!
Nice that the Friars lost and Dodgers won.
Biggio glove
Golden
Fryers' final, 8-6 Orioles.
Dodgers win!!!
Futuring again!
Nope still the past. The world doesn’t actually revolve around you dear chap.
Pure honey.
Honeywell. He has been good.
Can’t go to the Honeywell too often can you? Hopefully not today anyways.
Honey Well v Honey Bucket
I was a young boy in Japan, so that has a particular meaning.
Very pleasant surprise.
Why not?
Not that he would have been safe but he would have scored had he been safe
Missed opportunity especially while Ohtani was at third
Ump?
BrIng him home Lux.
Let’s go Joe!
Biggio glove
Good bat and glove
Total package
Many couldn't understand why Friedman wanted him. Now answered
Kelly mind games.
Especially with his reputation for being "wild"
8-5 Baltimore now in bottom of the 8th.
Kimbrel doesn't get the ninth, but Fryers still get tying run to plate.
Let’s go Nick.
Nice AB by AB.
He walks on ball six…
Drives up the pitch count and gives Ahmed more pitches to see.
One whole pitch.
Well, is there such a thing as a partial pitch?
Let’s get these runners home.
Babe Biggio!
Biggio!
That's some futuring!
It’s already in the past my good man.
Still hard to believe Biggio's hitting sixth.
and Lux hitting 3rd
Maybe Kike' should have tried a bunt
Kelly is likely to plunk someone accidentally at this point.
“accidentally”
Although with Kelly it’s an invisible line between accidental and intentional.
He is unapologetic about not having good control.
Nick name== Rib Breaker
He's taken more from the Dodgers than he has given them
Don’t back down Lux!
Teo!!
¡Teóscar!
Babe Hernandez!
Biggio is a decent defensive 1B.
Heyward's line last 30 games:
.174 .280 .372 .652
Pages line last 30 games:
.204 .254 .283 .537

Dodgers bullpen ERA for July ranked last in MLB. Who knew?
I wonder where it stands regarding inherited runners scored?
Ryan gets an ERA just like that.
UGGGGGGGGH!
Outman playing those fly balls well to keep Altuve at second.
Orioles trying to blow their lead v. Fryers.
Babe Lux!
I like Babes.
White Sox now offering Crochet and Robert for one of Ryan or Wrobleski.
Last batter?
I think he's got a bit more leash.
Great slider.
This river is flowing
