Throw one pitch in that at bat and then change pitchers? That’s unusual.
Looking for a boom here.
Let’s go Miggy!
Bear with me. Yesterday's tense and dramatic 2-1 win by the Dodgers in 11 innings brought back memories for me of Game 6 of the 1956 World Series won by the Dodgers, 1-0, in 10 innings at Ebbets Field. I was 8 then. The game is mostly forgotten because it followed Don Larsen's perfect game and because of what happened the following day. Below is a link to Game 6. I will set the stage. Clem Labine, normally a reliever, pitched nine shutout innings.as did the Yankees' Bullet Bob Turley. In his career, Labine made only 38 starts in 513 games. Labine blanked the Yankees again in the top of the 10th. Manager Walt Alston let Labine, a career .075 hitter, lead off the bottom of the 10th and he popped up. Jim Gilliam then walked and Pee Wee Reese sacrificed him to second. Turley intentionally walked Duke Snider to get to Jackie Robinson. who then hit a line drive single to left field to score Gilliam and end the game, 1-0. It would be the last World Series game ever won by Brooklyn and the final run Brooklyn ever scored in the World Series. It was also Robinson's final hit. He went hitless the following day and retired after the season. In Game 7 of the series, Yogi Berra hit two-run homers off Don Newcombe in the first and third innings and the Yankees romped, 9-0. taking the World Series in seven games. The Dodgers didn't reach the World Series in 1957 — their last year in Brooklyn — but the Yankees did, losing to the Milwaukee Braves in seven games.
Lou Burdette was the WS star in 1957 with 3 wins as I remember. I was into the 55 and 56 WS. They were my earliest memories of a WS. Thanks for the post scooplew
I would play Vargas in LF instead of Taylor.. Not sure why they brought him up if they are not going to play him. I would like to see what he can do. We know what KT3 can do. Virtually nothing. I don't get it.
Doc's penchant for playing Taylor, even once in a while, is befuddling. The season passed the 40 percent mark yesterday. Vargas may or may not have a good career in front of him; we won't know unless he plays. We know all what we need to know about Taylor.
Doc is likely a bit more sentimental than you are. This is probably CT3’s last hooray and Doc hoping beyond hope that he snaps out of it before the inevitable. With their record it’s a luxury that they can afford. Doc mentioned that when Vargas came up that he wouldn’t be playing much, at least at first.
Dodgers (40-25)

Not going to pretend that Teoscar is clutch or anything this year (OPS+97 RISP) but some of that is likely SSS, as he is at 112 for his career, but I want to point out his relatively unique position for a 5/6th hitter in the league that puts him under the microscope. Our first four batters put up hefty numbers and get on base a lot, more so than any other team in the league. As a result, Teoscar comes to bat almost half the time with men on base (league average is 44%) so we see him failing (and flailing) many a time, though his success rate is not really all that terrible. We have 4 hitters in the top ten in terms of raw numbers of base runners on when they step to the plate. Here are their four sets of numbers for PA, BR(base runners), BRS%(base runners scoring) and RBI. 1). 286, 204, 14.5%, 38; 2). 282, 185, 13.5%, 40; 3). 274, 198, 14.7%, 41; and 4). 233, 176, 16.5%, 38. Now, guess which one is Ohtani, Freeman, Smith, and Hernandez.
Stone gets another Win
Pretty great game!
Go for a series sweep and a winning road (above .500, that is) trip tomorrow.
Woo-HOO!!!
Yay!! Awesome job boys.
Dodgers win!!!
In a game like this a team could ask Roger Owens to come in and pitch an inning or two.
This guy has to pitch to at least 3
This is embarrassing for the Yankees.
WBBsAs is loving it.
CT3 just missed getting to gave this new “pitcher”.
Yankees having to use a lot of their bullpen.
Freddie finally hits one solidly! (After the same outside pitch called for a strike.)
Exactly!
More typical double by Freddie there.
Glasnow is sitting on the bench thinking – save some runs for me.
Like sitting in an old gum tree
Talk a walk CT. Keep that average above .100
That count went from 3-0 to a k in a heartbeat. I feel bad for Chris. And yes I know about the $ he makes.
But his average is still over .100 at least. Very, very least.
Does it make you feel better when you perform poorly at your job the thought that you are being paid anyway?
No, but if I am worried about keeping a job I need it would help to have $60MM in the bank.
Yeah. I guess big picture that is true.
Help in what way? Guessing that CT3 never gives that a thought. This is his life, his career. He wants to do well.
Exactly Bob. And no – because my job gets paid somewhere between youth pastor at a small church and whoever else gets paid less than that.
KT3 strikes again.
I think Hernandez will be the game MVP: 3 homers, 4 runs scored, 7 RBI’s.
Or am I Hernandezing wrong?
Three more outs!
Today's game should slow down the trade for an outfielder talk that is everywhere on Dodger blogs.
Doubt it. They still need to upgrade outfield. Teoscar was never the weak link out there.
I like Outman, Pages, Heyward, and Hernandez
They sent James down. Doubt that they are counting on him at this point.
Yarbs in there to finish the game I would think.
Yankees – Dodgers getting the star treatment because they haven’t played in NY since 2016 or whatever.
That won’t ever happen again of course now with the new balanced schedule.
Rojas out. But probably safe.
The bigger item there though is the Dodgers have a great chance to ensure they remain undefeated (18-0 maybe) when Rojas gets a base hit.
I wonder what the record is if anybody in the bottom third of the lineup gets a hit?
Baltimore is loving the Dodgers rn.
I think it is safe to say that Teo's slump is over.
Hasn’t been in much of a slump. Last 7 days OPS+ 135, last 14 days 115 and last 28 119 and for the season 128.
Up until yesterday he had one RBI in the last 2 weeks.
New definition of slumping? Teammates weren’t getting on when he was hitting, because he has been hitting.
Cue the back end of the bullpen for the Dodgers.
Don’t really have a back at this point. Everyone is pitching in.
That is an excellent point.
Teoscar delivers again. Grand Salami!
Grand Salami!!!!!
TEO!!!!!!!!!
I thought he got under that one! Lol
TEO!!!!!!!
Teo swinging aggressively on pitch number 1 there.
Sacks are full…
Lucky break for the Dodgers there. From 2 out and no one on to 2 on and no one out.
My goodness. How many former Dodgers do the Yankees have on their team right now?
Started with Casey Stengel in 1922.
Keep mowing them down.
Vesia nets another K
Sounds fishy – but it’s true!
Nyet fishy at all
9 big outs to get.
Now 8
Based on ytd performance and now this big game at Yankee Stadium, Stone looks like a guy who should get a start in a WS.
Vesia!
Phew. Nice work Vesia. I was worried for a second that he jammed Volpe and a little flair was going to be trouble.
100 pitches
If none of Stone's runners score, his stats will look good at Yankee Stadium.
Good job Vesia.
Lots of Yankee contact finds a hole
Dig deep now Stone.
Good work Teo.
Both Freddie and Will just hit them where they ain’t.
Phew. Stone got Stanton to hit that to the right part of the park.
Stone says “Good morning, good afternoon, and good night” to Volpe.
Hernandez power!!!
Keo
Stone looking strong out there.
Nice play EH!!
Cortes looked locked in there in that half inning.
Settling in to watch this game after an afternoon family bday party followed by church. Looking forward to some great baseball.
Meh. Have to attend silly dinner party.
When they call those wide pitches strikes on Freeman he’s gonna start swinging at them. Result? DP.
Rats!!
Well, a boomlet.
Lightening strikes!
Well, I’ll be!
Stone limits the damage.
I’m not sure there’s enough to overturn.
Guess it’s the famous “tie goes to the runner”.
DP..? Maybe?
Yankees seriously not messing around.
Teoscar says hello!
Teo en fuego.
Good job, Gavin!
Stone gets out of it.
Stone got lucky on that pitch to Judge.
Yankees come out swinging.
Nice to hear Joe D.
His partner in the booth can be tedious at times bemoaning the way today’s game is played.
I know. Tedious is the perfect word choice.
Ump already with a bad call on the 3rd pitch of the game.
I had a free hour’s WIFi between Juneau and Anchorage to follow on Gameday. It expired in the tenth, and I didn’t see anything more until baggage claim in bottom of 11th. Watched condensed before falling asleep.
