Atlanta at Philadelphia, 2:07 PM PDT, TV: TBS
The Braves haven’t announced their starter as of 7:25 PM HST Tuesday, but it’ll be one of these guys. Whoever it is will face the Phillies’ RHP Aaron Nola. The series is tied at one game apiece.
Los Angeles at Arizona, 6:07 PM PDT, TV: TBS
RHP Lance Lynn will start for the backs-against-the-wall Dodgers and RHP Brandon Pfaadt starts for the upstart D-Backs. The Diamondbacks lead the series 2-0.
- 1948 In Game 6 of the Fall Classic, the Indians beat Boston at Braves Field, 4-3, to capture the team’s second World Series title in franchise history. Bob Lemon wins the game, with Gene Bearden pitching the final one and two-thirds innings to earn the save.
- 1965 In Game 5, a 7-0 victory over the Twins at Dodger Stadium, Willie Davis becomes the second player to steal three bases in a World Series game. The L.A. center fielder joins Pirates shortstop Honus Wagner, who accomplished the feat on the same date 56 years ago against Detroit in Game 3 of the 1909 Fall Classic.
- 1975 As the first host of Saturday Night Live, George Carlin compares baseball to football in the opening monologue of the ground-breaking show. The comedian jokes the national pastime is a gentler game, portraying the sport as pastoral and played in a park as opposed to football, where the objective is to march downfield and penetrate enemy territory in a stadium.
- 1978 Rookie right-hander Bob Welch strikes out Reggie Jackson with two men on base and two out in the top of the ninth inning, dramatically preserving a 4-3 Dodger victory over the Yankees in Game 2 of the Fall Classic. The relief performance will put the 21-year-old in the national spotlight.
Well, overall it was a good season. Certainly made for an entertaining spring and summer. Thanks Link for this blog and outlet. It has been a pleasure sharing this journey with you all here. Very disappointing way for it to end. I wish I could figure out why our offense disappears so dramatically in the playoffs.
Hope everyone has a happy, safe, and healthy off season and hope to see you here for some hot stove talk.
Gil Hodges went 0-for-21 in the 1952 World Series, which Brooklyn lost to the Yankees. “Praying for Gil Hodges” is a great book about the Brooklyn Dodgers and Hodges. It is by Thomas Oliphant.
It’s sad to think if Lynn had given up the homeruns in say the 5th inning instead of the 3rd – Roberts probably would have pulled him after 3 or even 2 of them.
Ouch. Right off the catchers bare hand.
Costa likes the word counterpart.
Haha! That made me laugh. It’s so true.
And Mookie and Freddie have gone a combined 1-16 or 1-17 so far.
Freddie has one hit, but your point is well taken.
My first prediction on this blog, ever I believe: Muncy hits a pair of homers, Mookie hits one, Lynn allows only one homer, and the Dodgers win, 7-2.
I feel like the Dodgers break out the bats as well. I sense an 8-5 score.
I predict Muncy bunts twice.
Not playing close attention today, but not upset with Barves’ face-planting.
Me neither, except insofar as the Phillies look to be a very dangerous opponent if the Dodgers somehow win.
Ideally, whoever wins, it goes the full five with an 18-inning finale that burns out both bullpens.
MLB attempts to explain the Dodgers’ poor performances in the postseason.
Well my friends, I had a feeling this wasn’t happening for us this year, even though I always have that little spark of maybe. I hope Kershaw realizes this was a team-wide post-season fail, not just on his part. And unlike Scoop, I really loved this year, every bit of it. Unexpected joys, loved the new pitchers, Jay-Hay, this mix of old and new. I’ve been as relaxed for the most part as I can remember. Big love to all of you. Big thanks to Link. As for what’s next, I am rooting against the Astros but otherwise uninterested going forward.
Hoping we might be able to meet up next season in SoCal. I’d like to see a game at Dodger Stadium for the first time several years, and another at The Litterbox (we have close friends in SD).
That was a highlight. Let’s get a gang together!
That was a highlight. Let’s get a gang together!
Well, I actually loved most of it , just not the ending. It was too predictable. And it was great to hang out with RBI and Winnipeg Dave for a few days and go to Dodger Stadium with them.
The best! Sorry, I misinterpreted your post below.
Dodgers pitched 7 innings of scoreless ball. One bad inning beat them, well that and only having one Smith in the lineup.
Well, that’s 6 1/2 months that I won’t get back. Friends, I may not return next season. Getting long in the tooth. Wishing all of you a happy long off-season. and thanks for your observations, wisdom and camaraderie.
I understand. I hope you drop in from time to time though.
It’s a long, long way from October to April. We’ll see. But thanks.
Scoop – thanks for your friendship. It will continue even beyond the Dodgers and Dodger blogs.
Absolutely.
Our game/time together was so. Much. Fun!
Next year we need to win the Wild Card on the last day of the season. Maybe that will change our luck.
Good idea. Lol
Thanks for the company everyone
See you next year friends.
WBB sorry that I keep getting upset with you.
Get upset with delayed broadcasts instead.
Perhaps you’re right. But regardless – see you next year for more agreeing/disagreeing.
That’s all she wrote.
I want to see Outman get up
Homer in most parks.
Yeah. Gave it a ride for sure.
Up to Kiké and maybe Outman.
Link – if this is the end of the Dodger season: Thank you for your hospitality. Thanks for all your write ups and behind the scenes work and energy.
We still have two outs
I did say if.
You’re welcome. I’ll still be posting postseason game threads as always, so drop by if you’re watching.
Might take a break for the LCS – and return throughout the WS.
Still love the WS no matter what.
I’ll only watch the WS if the Llaneros eliminate the Trashtros. I’ll be rooting half-heartedly for the Fillies as well.
Potential tying run coming up.
Smith, thank you
2 outs to get 2 runs.
Ok Max. Just get on.
The outlook wasn’t brilliant for the Mudville nine that day;
the score stood four to two, with but one inning more to play.
135 years old and still relevant.
Excellent reference; we just need a far different ending.
Not sure who are Casey is right now anyways.
It looked extremely rocky for the Mudville nine that day
The score stood two to four with but one inning left to play.
That response encapsulates you.
Merely copy-editing.
Was Muncy just reading How Not to Play Third Base?
I try to not say anything about Muncy because I have said too much but since you bring him up, I’m not a fan.
You’re a gentleman, but I had realized that a long time ago.
Muncy at third is something I wouldn’t mind changing next year.
Yes.
Four solos in the third and nothing since for AZ.
Slump, slump, slump.
Mookie has a history of running hot and cold but this year he had a really long hot streak. Unfortunately, when he cools…
Mookie and Freddie putting on a clinic
I might be tempted to walk Wong to pitch to Mookie as well
Mookie k’s on some bad pitches.
You’re regressing.
For the love of God, Montresor!
WBBsAs, I will spare you what I feel about dozens of your posts over the years.
Wong walk.
Correction: Wong, Betts and Freddie, and we take the lead.
Wong was wight.
6 outs to get 2+ runs.
Rojas, Mookie and Freddie, and we take the lead.
Peeking in. Go Blue!
Happy Birthday!
Yes, now let’s make it a REALLY Happy Birthday!
sigh
DP by Pham!
You continue to improve.
Believe it or not – game play is actually not changed by our comments.
A k of Carroll by Graterol!
Graterol coming in.
Barnes channels Barnes.
The last third of the season, Barnes hit better than Smith.
Peralta not hitting well obviously. Replaced by Barnes.
But Barnes grounds out. On a ball low and out of the zone.
Tough spot, having played very little recently.
That’s true.
He should have looked at a pitch, but wait, that’s what he usually does.
Dodgers need to break past the 2 run barrier.
Is Samson pulling down the pillars?
4 singles against 4 home runs
Let’s go Kiké! 4-2.
It’s getting even better.
Pathetic throw by Gurriel.
Kiké. Be a hero.
Yes! A run.
OK, your futuring has improved.
A tiny, tiny glimmer of hope. CT3 needs to drive one out.
Sub Outman for Taylor
I did my job.
Muncy finally, finally goes the other way
Grove couldn’t get anybody to swing at a non strike
But he got through the inning.
Our best hitter by average in this series is Rojas at .333
Smith and JD have ops in 900’s. But yeah it’s Rojas and those 2. That’s about it.
Oh. And Kiké.
Arise bats. It is time to arise.
I find it hard to believe that Kershaw’s last start in MLB could be a 1 out, 6 run disaster. Of course maybe he doesn’t retire but goes to Texas. Who even knows?
I doubt he knows yet.
Exactly right.
Hard to leave the game that way but the game gave him enough.
And he gave us fans enough too in his career.
Unless he wants to give us more.
Man, did every guy on the team have to go into a hitting slump now?
Somewhere Rosario is thinking – if only they had me.
Same with yarbrough
Yessir
Now or not much later Mookie.
He’ll hit a grand slam in his next AB.
I’ll buy that for a dollar.
Canadian or U.S.? LOL.
Grove: 22 pitches. 10 strikes. 2 walks. No runs.
He has bragging rights
That was a worrisome inning.
Phew.
I’m always curious why some are on less of a delay than me. I’m watching TBS. Are you Dave as well?
I’m watching on SportsNet – which is very much delayed. But I’m following on MLB Gameday which is not delayed.
I will switch to SportsNet if it is still scoreless.
I’m watching TBS via Hulu.
Grove can’t locate his pitches.
This might not end well.
Nice k of Pham there.
Grove coming in.
At this point in the game Pepiot might be saved for game 4 should Dodgers score 5+
Like saving Drysdale for the first game of the 1962 World Series vs. the Yankees?
Fergusson still pitching.
He usually doesn’t get to go this long.
Need a Kiké special here.
He just missed it.
Nice bunt fundamentals there CT3
Channeling Cash in the 2020 World Series?
Here’s hoping.
Let’s rip into that bullpen now.
Nice hit Will.
I am not yet ready to listen to the Kinks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ow1x5MPjHUc
Agreed.
Ok. Let’s do something here Dodgers.
If you sign only one, would it be Ohtani or Snell?
Snell.
I’d go with Snell. Despite how our bats have performed this postseason, I think we need pitching more next season, and Ohtani won’t pitch until 2025.
We need an extreme makeover for next year.
Forgetting money, Ohtani
How about you?
The bats have died I think.
Go back to 1966. The Dodgers stopped hitting and got swept in the WS. It’s happening now.
The 1966 Dodgers were not a great hitting team.
The post-seasons that have followed the Dodgers’ regular seasons for almost every year for more than a decade is like taking a date to the prom who then leaves with someone else when the band packs up.
This year I think the band was still playing when the date left.
To be fair, the band wasn’t any good either
Dodgers’ starters in the three games: 14 outs, 13 runs.
Woof. Ugly.
On top of the results, the TBS feed is abominable.
As in a snowman?
Hard to comprehend how the Dodgers must be feeling deep down.
I guess the Dodgers have struggled with starting pitching a bit this year.
They have used a lot of different guys but still won 100 games.
Hoping it gets to 101 tonight.
Yeah, that makes it all better.
Dodgers need to score some runs tonight.
That reprieve was short-lived.
Get the reprieve and then groove the next pitch. Man.
I know this is the last thing Lynn wanted to have happen, but still.
Yikes.
I wanted Pepiot for tonight’s game. Live and die with the rookies.
Yeah, but.
This is not a second guess, honestly, but I also wanted Pepiot.
I said it as soon as Lynn was announced a few days ago
How can a baseline umpire blow that call?
All four homers on pitches right down the middle.
Wake up, Dave!
It was foul, but not as foul as Lynn.
Lance doing too good of a job imitating Lance
Challenge?
Lance Lynn is not looking good as a free agent.
I think he’s overstayed his welcome.
Pretty much making the decision on his option easy. I hope he is not back next year.
Four? FOUR?
I guess that Dave wasn’t listening.
This is absurd.
Pull him now, Dave.
Well – now for sure.
This is the worst fiuturing all year.
Lynn is still trying to match Blyleven’s record of 50 HR’s allowed.
Tonight? Will he throw that many pitches?
Ends with 48. That’s bad.
You gotta be kidding me.
Good grief.
Trashtros advance, so color me utterly uninterested in ALCS (though I guess I’ll give benefit of the doubt to Dallas).
Rangers all the way.
Number 3.
Why do some pitchers give up so many homers? Any analyses on that?
Well, at least they were just solo shots.
Exactly.
Solo and so high.
Yeah but
Geez.
There’s the AZ 2. Dodgers still need their 7.
And a second one.
Yikes
You all have a pleasant good evening.
Take care.
Come back soon, package.
Dodgers were doing fine while you were here.
Dodgers need a come from behind win now.
And there’s the home run.
A Lance specialty
Another very quiet inning.
Except for Kike’ and his 50 mph ball to left
A hit?
Followed by a dp
Kiké starts it off.
And 1 pitch later Peralta kills it.
Very bad futuring.
Wrong kind of rally killer
Last chance saloon for the Twins. Down 3-2 bottom 9th.
Nicely done. Now let’s put up a three-spot.
Future people, please!
It’s safe to look!
Really want a Dodger starter to get to – and past – the third inning in this series.
Keeping it in front of the fence.
Let’s get Longoria now Lynn.
Bear down now, Lance.
I am wearing my Jackie Robinson T-shirt, which I seldom do. I saw him play in the only game I ever attended at Ebbets Field. My email address includes the number 42.
I’m wearing my Deuces Wild t-shirt.
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-csAAWgUiD-Y/UX32Fb4avsI/AAAAAAAANJw/UTj_gCMcTVo/s400/shirtFront.jpg
two out, two on, two balls, two strikes, tie score 2 and 2
Max. Come on.
For some reason I am going to feel better if the Dodgers are eliminated that Atlanta is as well.
6up6dn
Not… great.
Thank you Lance.
First time Dodgers have not trailed after top of the first.
Now have 8 innings to score after zip in the first.
I know it is only the 1st inning but this is not a good start.
Where is Winnipeg Dave? Probably eating Ice Cream, huh?
Hey package. Still finishing off the pumpkin pie from Thanksgiving. Lol
Outman not starting. Hernandez is in center.
I like this lineup a little better than the 1st 2.
I like Outman but it was getting a little painful when the guy I really like struggles.
Good Luck Dodgers!!
Thanks, and welcome back.
Hi, Package!
Also, I am going out to dinner w visiting sister and therefore recording the bulk of the game. But peeking will be happening. Counting on you guys!!!!
Grilled snake?
Roadkill.
It’s my birthday. How can they not get the win..? (Rhetorical question – there exist many answers, but primarily because, baseball.)
Happy Birthday RBI
Happy Birthday RBI! Hope you are having a day filled with joyful celebration!
Happy Birthday RBI.
