- 1908 In Brooklyn, the last-place Cardinals blank the Brooklyn Superbas (Dodgers), 3-0. The entire Washington Park contest is played with just one ball.
- 1941 Mickey Owens becomes the first catcher to handle three foul pop ups in one frame. The Brooklyn backstop’s third inning defense contributes to the Dodgers’ 11-6 victory over New York at Ebbets Field.
- 1942 In a military relief game at the Polo Grounds, which will be the last war-time twilight game played, Pee Wee Reese’s grand slam in the top of the ninth, which puts the Dodgers up 5-1, doesn’t count, because of the 9:10 pm government curfew. The game ends up as a 1-1 tie with the Giants.
- 1948 Ernie Harwell, filling in for Red Barber, who is recovering from a bleeding ulcer, calls his first major league game as the Dodgers beat the Cubs at Ebbets Field, 5-4. To obtain the future Hall of Fame broadcaster, Brooklyn general manager Branch Rickey trades minor league catcher Cliff Draper to the Atlanta Crackers.

NPUT
Oh baby! The runs keep coming and they don’t stop coming.
Just finished watching two episodes of “Suits” on Netflix with my wife. It’s an entertaining and tense show about a high-powered civil law firm in NYC. Noticed that the Dodgers game, even more tense, is now on MLBTV; been following it on my Smartphone. If the Dodgers hang on here, that five-run eighth could be the biggest inning of the year thus far.
I have enjoyed that show the few times I have seen it.
Meghan Markle, now the Duchess of Sussex, has a major role in it. There are scenes that Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip likely didn’t like. The Duchess is/was a fine actor.
Truly peripheral, but a friend in Berkeley has a house near where Oppenheimer lived. The Irish actor who portrays Oppenheimer was brilliant in the Netflix series “Peaky Blinders,” about an early 20th century mafia in Birmingham (England),
Friends of mine who saw the film Oppenheimer say that it is tremendous.
Very powerful movie. Never go antsy during the 3 hours.
We’re going to try to see it this weekend. The biography of Oppenheimer, “American Prometheus,” is on my reading list.
That particular actor has always given me the creeps, but was quite good, given the script, which didn’t bring out the ambitious nature and flamboyance that Oppenheimer apparently displayed in his life.
He’s truly intense (as was Oppenheimer, I think).
Vesia from the little town of Alpine (at least it was little in my days in San Cali Ding Dong).
On the way to Calexico (a fine band by the way)
After watching a winter league game in Mexicali, I met several Dodger minor leaguers at Calexico’s now historic Hotel De Anza (including Garey Ingram, who had some brief shining moments in Dodger Stadium).
Mexicali was the railroad town where I would take the train south to DF. Big town for Chinese food, a relict from its RR construction days.
I took the train once to Mazatlán. I do recall plentiful Chinese restaurants, and also some great banda music.
Lived a month in Mazatlan when I was 16. Just a wonderful old Pacific port in those days.
The train got delayed when somebody died en route. That’s when I learned the word falleció – “no tiene vida.”
Outman is +3 runs tonight so far.
But OUTMAN does hit a HR!
Tomorrow’s game starts an hour earlier than today’s.
Doc made some good moves and took advantage of the flexibility the roster provides.
If the Dodgers win at least one more in this series, the Padres will be 4 more games closer to the end of the season – and still be under .500.
Yippee!
That’s 36 runs for the Dodgers in their last four games. Yes, I know that three were against the A’s, but still that’s a lot of runs.
Game had a little bit of everything.
Amazing defensive plays, hits, stolen bases, etc. And 3 hour 15 min of game time.
That’s a long game these days. I love the clock on the pitchers and the fact that batters can’t walk out of the box more than once, or ask for a timeout more than once.
Lions, Tigers, Bears
I like beating these guys more than beating the Giants.
I certainly enjoy beating them more than the Giants beating them.
That is a close one. Giants are a bigger threat right now.
Yay, we win.
Dodgers win!
Woo-HOO!!!! This was a big win.
Soto hammered that one.
Nah, he snuck it over the wall.
He hammered it.
Legit, but not that well hit.
He is an excellent player and not a hot dog like Tatis or someone who doesn’t run out ground balls like Machado, who, by the way, is now batting .257.
Was a joy to watch him bat over the years in National Stadium.
Do you think that his skills have deteriorated, or his attitude, or both or neither?
He is having a great season. Seems to have sacrificed some hitting for greater power, such that he seems like a different hitter. He used to show extreme patience, but now looks to drive the ball. He had a tough last half of 2022.
This may have been commented on before, but those Padre uniforms are atrocious. Can’t tell if they look more like a rainbow popsicle or a dog’s upchuck.
Gnot gnearly so bad as the Gnats’ Friday Halloween unis.
The colors seem a better fit in Miami
Yes, perhaps on the old Miami Vice show.
Broderick Crawford in action! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WO1PAwqDpr4
Thanks for sharing that.
Where’s the ref to stop the fight? Lol
Barlow must be bummed.
CT RBI!
Don’t stop now!
A hot Willie is good!
WIlly gets a double! That’s great for his confidence.
And our comfort level
Nice job Will
Don’t be hitting our MVP in the knee!!!!
0-4 and a HBP
Caleb’s been shaky lately.
Don’t go 0-5 tonight Fred.
Freddie is due.
Phew
Tatis gets the fastball he wanted, but this ain’t Yankee Stadium.
Breathe out…
This is quite a game.
That pitch could have gone either way. But it went theirs.
Darvish would have gotten it.
Agreed. He did, in fact.
Yep. He did.
No relief from the tension.
OK, Caleb, quit messin’ around.
Rosario is a ball player! Who did we have to give up, again…
The new god of thunder!
Rosario! Has never made a throw like that in his life
¡Rosario!
What a play!!!
A four-bouncer!
How do you even think that fast?
I saw the slo-mo replay.
I was actually talking about the play, but also really appreciate your color commentary!!!
Walks will kill you.
Yep. As will HBP’s.
Rosario brings in two!!!
Rosario trade paying off big time. Woot!!
https://twitter.com/DodgerInsider/status/1687678245876158464?s=20
We will take it.
Elite futuring.
I would have let Outman hit.
Hahaha.
That was meant for the walk, not your comment.
LOL. Thanks. Shows what I know.
Can’t quibble with the result.
(Just kidding. We were out walking and listening on the radio, like you do.)
Hey, guys. Did I miss anything?
Nice tight division game, just like back in the old days!
Well, no longer.
¡Absolutamente nada!
Good job Chris..
That’ll do – for now!
Giving Suarez a tough time.
Lotsa pitches, unlikely he’ll be available tomorrow.
Mr. Salami up
Bat out of his hands as well!
Jason can do it here.
Bat out of his hands.
Peralta clutchy!
Peralta saves the inning.
This is it. Gotta make it happen here.
Something cooking and here comes Chef Freddie!
Machado’s barehand keeps Outman on first, at least until he steals second.
Funny, but good DP.
Snakes have lost to Twinkies.
At least the pen is well-rested.
The absence of Martínez and Muncy is noteworthy.
Kelly, so hold on to your hats.
Didn’t help
Klaasic Kelly
Willie didn’t help.
It didn’t look like he was expecting a fastball.
Didn’t look crossed up to me.
Willie should have held on to the ball.
At least I still have my hat thanks to your warning
Didn’t hold on to the first pitch either, so ump didn’t call it a strike.
3.2 innings and 82 pitches.
It’s been an issue for most of the starters recently. 109 through 5 innings. 82 through 4. That kind of thing.
Adios Miller. Been walking a tightrope all night and won’t be given a shot at third time through.
This feels like a root canal.
Too many pitches!
Didn’t get the runner, but Rosario showed off a strong arm.
Smith rips one to RF
Would love to have seen Max’s bat out there tonight.
Get out of my way old man
Outman robs Quique!
Grab some pine, Soto!
Not playing the A’s anymore.
Exactly.
I have confidence that, playing at home, the A’s will swat the Gnats over the weekend.
Lotta pitches and a lotta pressure pitches
Indeed.
Kim takes the throw. Baseball like back in the day
I’m sure Tatis feels better now
Wow! Nothing like bringing out the best from your opponent.
Good show Mr. Miller
Pretty high pitch count, though.
Nice. Miller gets out of it!
First-rate futuring.
Grisham might be the most annoying Paddy (at least after Machado).
I don’t keep track of that stat.
Come on Padres, hit the ball to CF or RF.
Freddie’s supposed to make that play.
Darvish, that is out man!
Heyward leather!
Fine running catch.
I thought for sure he would homer or at least get a hit to start the inning.
Strikeout, throw out? Let’s ask NYC.
I’d say safe.
If Rosario tagged him it was with his forearm and not the glove. Is that a tag?
Irksome to give up a dunker base hit but Outman sure made me feel better.
Tatis, you are out man!
Yes sir!
One ball! That’s so crazy.
Ha! Willie got wheels!
But what say NYC?
Drat!
With the Gnats idle – on a Friday! – Dodgers can lengthen their lead to three full games. They actually have a four-game lead in the loss column, which would mean more later in the season.
How can they be not playing on a Friday?
It’s a weird scheduling blip for sure.
I guess someone else is not playing.
The A’s are not playing. They host the Gnats tomorrow.
MLB’s “balanced schedule” is a farce.
