Cardinals at Dodgers, 7:10 PM PDT, TV: FS-M, SPNLA
RHP Miles Mikolas (4-6, 4.54 ERA) goes for the Cardinals against the Dodgers’ LHP Clayton Kershaw (10-2, 2.85 ERA). Mikolas has pitched against the Dodgers once in his career; he beat them on April 8 of this year. Kershaw criticized his last start, in which he walked five men, gave up two runs and went just six innings, but he did get the win. He’s 7-0 with a 2.35 ERA at home this year.
Notable praise from San Diego’s Wil Myers, speaking of the Dodgers’ redheaded rookie Dustin May: “Usually,” Myers said, “guys like that, who throw 98 with sink, end up being pretty good.”
Here’s Muncy’s stellar defensive play on Monday:
This day in Dodgers’ history:
- 1981 The players approved a split-season format necessitated by the seven-week strike. The Yankees, A’s, Phillies, and Dodgers are declared the first-half champions and will be automatically qualified for the divisional series.
Great moments in labor-management relations: In 1908 Detroit outfielder Ty Cobb gets married, having departed the Tigers three days ago to participate in the ceremony without the team’s permission. The 21 year-old Georgia Peach’s six-day defection during a pennant race will be described by club co-owner Frank Navin as the most arrogant act he had ever heard of in baseball. (Note: The Tigers got to the World Series anyway. They lost to the Cubs, the last time the Chicago team would win a World Series until 2016.)
Lineup when available.
Tonight’s Dodger lineup vs. Cardinals:
Pederson RF
Muncy 2B
Turner 3B
Bellinger 1B

Beaty LF
Negrón CF

Happy to see Edwin Rios back, walking and then later scoring the insurance run. Rios now has 5 walks to Beaty’s 6.
Kristopher Negron is on fire – .391/.417/.652, OPS = 1.069. He doesn’t appear to have the arm for the outfield, though..
NPUT
Birds v. Dodgers coverage is now beginning on YouTube.
Man, this play by Bellinger is amazing. The thought process has to be so quick!

I like the way he catches a routine throw from an infielder, so …
Drat. Wong again.
Wright.
Fine catch by Joc there! It woulda scored the tying run.
And, saved a win for Kersh
Should Negrón have gotten that throw to third a bit quicker? Seemed slow to me.
He set up perfectly, but it was not accurate. He doesn’t appear to have a strong arm.
With tonight’s results, the Dodgers remain 18 games ahead of the Snakes, while the Gnats fall to 19 back. The Pads trail by 22, the Rox by 22.5. For best in the NL, Dodgers remain 8.5 ahead of Barves. In all of baseball, they remain one ahead of the Minute Maids, and 1/2 (.003) ahead of the Yanquis.
Another win for Kersh.
One behind Koufax now I believe.
You’re right.
Dodgers win!
Great game!!!!
Woo-HOO!!!
So far, so good.
On to the 9th.
An ode to joy?
Well Belli didn’t k or ground out at least.
Petey got a lot of encouragement from the fans.
Big cheers to be sure.
On to the 9th!
Bottom of the eighth, actually…
Ha! You got me there.
Pedro!!!!
Fine future person!
He was lights out!
Tension.
Hypertension…
Vamos, ¡Petey!
Cards not going to go quietly are they?
Wong is a pest.
They never do. (Except yesterday.)
Martinez making all the catches now. But Max does an amazing job with 2 out, 2 strike hitting.
Petty said it best. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNMT4AYf6Xo
Max delivers!
Ball is staying in the park tonight.
They were saying it’s a bit humid.
Martínez doesn’t usually catch that ball. He’s a terrible defensive outfielder.
Maybe that’s why he breathed a big sigh of relief after making the grab.
Tit for tat.
Now time to break it open please.
Another 9 k’s for Clayton tonight. At this rate, Kershaw will be well north of 2450 k and closing in on 2500 k by season’s end.
Nice catch, Joc!
Nice Joc my man!
Thanks Joc!
Very good outing by Kershaw.
Feels like Seattle is in a lot of interesting games this year. Anyway – in another one tonight.
I doubt Lamet will finish it, with ten K’s and four walks that’s lotsa pitches.
Isn’t crazy to think that someday there will be a combined perfect game? Almost had it this year already.
No hit bid is over.
Kershaw finishing strong. Another 6(+) inning start.
Klayton on fire.
Bellinger rolls it over and grounds out.

Time to score another run or two. Top of the order coming up.
There he is…
Yep. His best inning so far.
Woot! RBI JT!
Joc stroking the ball much better, with positive results.
Going back to standing more erect and choking up less than what he was doing coming out of the All Star game.
Kershaw now at 2400 k’s.
2401k… and counting.
When the dust settles post-injuries, I hope that Negron is still on the active roster. He’s been more than a pleasant surprise.
Negrón has been a pleasant surprise, though I’d rather he weren’t in CF.
I wasn’t mimicking you. I hadn’t seen your post when I posted.
RBI Negrón!
Nice hit, Corey!
Great play by Bellinger there.
Belli ballet.
Mikolas has quite the old-timey baseball mustache.
The porn stache…
Ha!
Straight outta “Boogie Nights.”
The shift gets Joc again. I wonder what he could do if there were no shifts?
That ball wasn’t hit especially hard.
Negrón lacks Verdugo’s arm.
There’s my answer!
Old friend Greinke’s first outing with the Minute Maids is not going quite the way Houston had hoped.
Maybe he isn’t used to pitching indoors
Astros came right back however. May get him the W yet!
He still blew a five-run lead.
11-6 Stros now. I truly dislike them.
Hah! I just figured out why Tyler White is on the team. He has four relief appearances this year. (Although now that I look, he stinks at that, too – ERA = 21.6. His Wikipedia article doesn’t mention that.)
Bad news on Verdugo, and Gonsolin gets a demotion. https://twitter.com/Dodgers/status/1158851868044304384?s=20
Verdugo to the IL is bad news. OKC is loaded, but it’s not that loaded.
Orel just said that they sent Gonsolin back down so he could get his next start on his regular day rather than wait in the big leagues.
He’ll be back.
We do have a lineup. https://twitter.com/jphoornstra/status/1158853861261508608?s=20
Hoornstra’s tweet inspired me to look up the Gonsolin surname, about which there is limited information online. According to Ancestry.com, “It may be an altered form of Goncelin, Gonssolin, from a pet form of a Germanic compound personal name formed with gund ‘battle’. Alternatively, perhaps, an altered form of Consolin, in southeastern France an occupational name for a magistrate.” Their map, however, shows the name concentrated in Louisiana, which might suggest it’s Cajun.
For what it’s worth, Tony himself hails from Vacaville, a literal cowtown.

A thorn in the Dodgers’ side has been removed. Joe Panik has been DFA’d
by the Jints. He was hitting .235/.310/.317 for a .627 OPS.
The Gnats were Panik-stricken.
I hear it’s Panik in the street.
I heard he has high hopes at landing something at the disco place.
The Cards and Dodgers have been playing one another for a long long time.
