Padres at Dodgers, 1:10 PM PT, TV: SPNLA, FSSD
The visiting Padres send RHP Luis Perdomo (6-6, 4.81 ERA) to the mound to face the Dodgers’ Kenta Maeda (10-4, 3.69 ERA) in a Sunday afternoon game.
Perdomo gets 62 percent of balls in play to hit the ground, tops among all NL pitchers with 100+ innings. He’s induced 22 ground-ball double plays this year, tied for third in all of baseball. Maeda has had trouble all year getting past the sixth inning, and his last time out was no exception. He went five and got no decision. He’s been in 20 games (18 starts) this season and has completed exactly 100 innings.
Hatcher reinstated, Farmer optioned.
This date in Dodgers’ history:
- 1910 In a game which features each team having 38 at-bats, 13 hits, 12 assists, 2 errors, 5 strikeouts, 3 walks, 1 hit batsman, and 1 passed ball, the Pirates and the Superbas (later to be known as the Dodgers) play to what else – an 8-8 tie.
- 1951 Any fan who shows up with a musical instrument during the Dodgers’ Musical Depreciation Night is admitted free to the Ebbets Field contest against Boston. With an assortment of trumpets, trombones, zithers, tubas, accordions, bugles, flutes, various type of drums, violins, mandolins, assorted horns, a glockenspiel, a washboard, and a piano, 2,426 fans, which is about 10% of the total crowd, take advantage of the team’s unusual promotion.
- 1965 Dean Chance establishes an American League record when he fans to extend his streak to 11 consecutive plate appearances with a strikeout. The Angels’ right-hander falls one shy of the major league mark set by Sandy Koufax, who whiffed in 12 consecutive plate appearances in 1955.
- 1982 At Chavez Ravine, Dodger second baseman Steve Sax steals his 41st base to set a franchise record for rookies when he swipes second base in LA’s 6-1 victory over San Francisco. The eventual National League Rookie of the Year, the fourth consecutive Dodger to win the award, will extend the record to 49.
- 2006 LA’s Greg Maddux and SF’s Jason Schmidt hook up in a classic West Coast pitcher’s duel, reminiscent of match-ups of Koufax and Marichal, as the Dodgers beat the Giants, 1-0, thanks to Russell Martin’s 10th inning walk-off home run. When Giants slugger Barry Bonds lines into a double play in the first inning, it marks the only time in baseball history a 300 game winner pitches to a batter with over 700 homers.
- 2007 For the first time in 1,303 games, Nomar Garciaparra of the Dodgers is ejected from a game. The 12-year veteran infielder, who is tossed by home plate umpire Tom Hallion for arguing a called third strike in the fourth inning, is restrained by first base coach Mariano Duncan when he continues to shout and points his bat toward the umpire.

After both the Rox and Snakes won last night, the Dodgers’ lead has slipped to 17-1/2 games. Time to get nervous?
Check out this box score from the Gulf Coast Dodgers in August 2006. Take particular note of the pitchers and catcher.
This got a lot of play after game five of the last year’s NLDS, when Klayton came on in relief of Kenley and registered the second save of his professional career. You had a late flight, otherwise you would have been there!
Got in about ten p.m. but didn’t know I had to call the hotel for their shuttle to come get me. I was an unpracticed traveler at that stage of my career.
Maybe this will replace the game today for entertainment value. Worth the watch.

If that clip stops running you might want to paste it to a new tab.

That’s quite an article. Thanks.
Ought to be required reading for those who don’t think FAZ knows what it’s doing.
The 1995 Cleveland Spiders finished 30 games ahead of the second-place Royals. Dodgers not likely to beat that.
In terms of overall dominance in their league, Spiders won 14 more games than anyone else in the AL. The 2001 Mariners the same. The Dodgers are currently at 13 games over the Nats.
Should note that the Spiders only played 144 games that season.
An 18-game lead is almost unbelievable.
Particularly when the two teams behind you have pretty darned respectable records of 13 games over .500 themselves.
I was going to say the same thing — they are potentially the two wild card teams.
The lead should be larger! In fact, I remember back in early July, I believe, when the Dodgers kept winning, but so did AZ and CO. ‘When are they going to break away?’ I thought.
Shortly after, was the answer.
I think one or the other of the Rox and Snakes could collapse and fail to reach the so-called wild card playoff. I would guess the Rox, whose starting pitching is more suspect.
Yeah, the Rox seem more likely not to be able to sustain their current pace.
The Dodgers last year at this time had the same record 65-52 that the Snakes and Rox have now. They were 1 game behind SF. After an off day on Monday, the Dodgers won on Tuesday to go up by half a game.
Is it 16-0-3 in our last 19 series then?
Something like that.
Believe radio said no other team has lost less than six series in that stretch — incredible!
Just wanna make sure LA wins three series in October! (Not counting CO — don’t wanna be caught in a technicality with my Wish List!)
“Unt now it ees zee Pale Hose, Mein Herr.”
Surprisingly short non-Kershaw game.
Woo-HOO!!!!
Yea!
This series sure seemed tough.
.667 seems like we can do better.
Wasn’t just the results, it was the struggle to get those two wins . . . and giving up the loss.
K-enley!
CT for the CaTch!
Flashing leather!
JT!!!!
When he hot, he hot!
And he be
Avilan does not inspire confidence.
Looked good just now however
Lotsa pitches increases possibility of mistakes.
Daddy Avilan!
Stayed away from the middle of the plate.
Whew!
Bats, how about making the top of the 9th (more) tension-free by some insurance here!
Get the K, LA!
Joc’s making Doc’s decisions easier re A-gon’s return.
Absolutely. I thought Joc had it straightened out when he returned from OKC.
Streaky.
He had OPS .980 from late June through July.
So does Joc go back to OKC, ala Puig, to get straightened out?
Doubt it. Puig’s demotion was for more than a hitting slump.
Let’s get it back, bats!
All our runs and hits came in the 4th inning.
That’s a “slump” for them.
Yesterday was more like it, vs. Friday.
In the same vein as “Kicking our people out of your country will save us money,” at least they’re not leaving RISP.
Does their Cory think he’s our Cody?
The ball is flying out.
Harper with a bone bruise but no structural damage. I am glad.
“Harper suffered the injury when he slipped on a wet first base”
From ESPN.
Good news for Harper and the Nationals. It sure looked a lot worse.
I wonder if Utley and umpire Ramon De Jesus, who ejected him last night, will chat today. That ump is at first base today.
So, Utley failed to move the runner over, but Grandal succeeded.
Dodgers’ 4th inning emblematic of how this team has played all season.
No WiFi at Nicasio, so I made a detour to Point Reyes Station just in time for the dingerfest. It’s balky here, though.
JT!
Joc is now 1-for-29 in August. Ouch.
C’mon, Joc. Surprise us.
The Padres are pesky.
Spangen – who?
Davis was saying that he was the tenth player taken in his draft year and then he rattled off a bunch of known big leaguers chosen after him.
Matchups vs. the White Sox this week at Dodger Stadium:
–Tuesday: RHP Hernandez (6-10, 4.83) vs. LHP Wood (14-1, 2.37)
–Wednesday: LHP Rodon (1-4, 4.24) vs. RHP Darvish (2-0, 1.50 with Dodgers, 8-9, 3.81 overall)
Dodgers are off tomorrow and Thursday, then go to Detroit for three and Pittsburgh for four.
The struggles of Pederson and Forsythe will make it easier for Roberts to slot Gonzalez at first base — occasionally, I presume — when he returns soon from the DL and rehab. For those games, Bellinger can move to the outfield and Taylor can play second, if Roberts wishes. Also, with three games in Detroit next weekend, Gonzalez can get plenty of at bats as a DH. Good timing there. I expect that Bellinger will still get a heavy percentage of the starts at first base.
The Tigers are the only team in the original AL that the Dodgers have never played in a World Series, and it ain’t gonna happen this year.
That is a great piece of knowledge. To expand upon it, here are those eight original AL franchises and when we played them in the World Series: Boston (1916), New York (1941, 1947, 1949, 1952, 1953, 1955, 1956, 1963, 1977, 1978, 1981), Cleveland (1920), Chicago (1959), Washington (as Minnesota) (1965), Philadelphia (as Oakland) (1974, 1988), St. Louis (as Baltimore (1966).
Nice.
I don’t care who they play in the Series — I just want them to be playing in it!
(Preferably winning it!)
I have that written down somewhere in a text file, but searching for it was way more work than I wanted to get into this morning.
Believe it or not, I have those pennant-winning seasons memorized. If I had only been so sharp in physics.
I used to. It would take a few minutes of thought to recite them now.
Old friend Javy Guerra is now a Fish.
Very Faulkner-esque.
I’m about to head across the Bay to Marin County, where Asleep at the Wheel makes its annual appearance at Rancho Nicasio’s Barbecue on the Lawn series. Music doesn’t start until 4 p.m., gates open at 3, but I’ll watch the game at the bar on my iPad… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdfpRPvMxoE
Have a great time.
I love Asleep At the Wheel, enjoy!
As usual, a great show. I saw for the first time 45 years ago at the late great Longbranch Saloon in Berkeley, where they played every Tuesday night.
