Dodgers at Diamondbacks, 6:40 PM PT, TV: SPNLA, FS-A
The Dodgers send Yu Darvish (7-9, 3.81 ERA) to make his second start in the NL; his first was a rousing success. He’ll face YALHP Anthony Banda (1-1. 3.86 ERA), who got his first big league win in his most recent start.
This date in Dodgers’ history:
- 1979 Dodger hurler Don Sutton sets a franchise record with his 50th shutout, blanking San Francisco at Candlestick Park, 9-0. The 34 year-old right-hander has previously shared the mark with Don Drysdale. (Ed. note: 50! In his tenth year Clayton Kershaw has a career total of 15!)
- 1995 The first forfeit in the majors in sixteen years occurs when the fans for the third time during the night throw promotional souvenir baseballs onto the Dodger Stadium field. At the time of the decision to halt the game, Los Angeles is trailing the Cardinals, 2-1 with one out in the bottom of the ninth.
August 10 is a good day for pitchers: in 1971 at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park, Juan Marichal records his 50th career shutout as the Giants blank the Expos, 1-0. The Dominican hurler’s ninth inning double helps to build the winning run.
Lineup when available.

It does not look like we have solved our go to eighth inning bullpen problem yet.
No pitcher is going to shut down the opposition every time out, particularly good teams. Unless there’s a trend developing, part of the game. 😉
With the Dodgers’ enormous division lead, Roberts has the luxury of experimenting with the ‘pen (which has been the league’s best).
Cingrani could be the next Alex Wood.
A future experiment might be using Ryu as a 7th or 8th inning guy, once Klayton returns.
That the FO went out to bolster the pen and Doc is experimenting is a good indication that the organization sees it as a problem, if only a relative one.
They were just resting Puig’s legs. He complained of a slight pain the other night.
Phew. Scary there at the end, but they got it done. I’m sure Darvish is disgusted with his performance, 10 Ks or no, but a win’s a win.
I’m guessing more frustrated than disgusted.
Woo-HOO!!!
A true test, vs. a possible/likely postseason team, taking 2 of 3 from them — in their house, as we were reminded.
AND getting the wins after an initial tough loss.
Whew-hoo!
Bullpen, take note of KJ!
Efficient and effective.
(Of course, they don’t have his tools.)
Kenley, it should’ve been a night off for you, but we need you again.
Let’s make the 9th like the type of airline flights I like — uneventful.
Bats, I know you’ve done your job tonight, but how about a laugher again, huh?
Please?
Double Ks!
K-ingrani!
Get the K or double play!
How about a double play to get out of this right here, right now?
Did I hear right? Cingrani has given up 3 runs and 3 its in 2 innings?
Doesn’t seem like the right guy for here.
Soooo glad to be proven wrong!
Whew!
Following the philosophy of using the closer when it’s most important to shut them down, this is the time for Kenley, but I doubt he was even warming up.
This should have been a laugher.
Now it’s tense, tying run to the plate.
Still 2nd & 3rd, but get the lead runner — that’s one out.
Morrow may not be long for tonight.
Not a good start to this 8th. Bullpen isn’t shutting the door on them, including a leadoff walk.
Shoeless Dan has started to annoy me.
Two more innings.
Dragging now, but they still seem dangerous, especially with the bullpen giving up dingers.
It has been a slow-moving game.
This has not been one of the Dodgers’ prettiest games this season.
How nice that when Yu has an “off night,” he still gets 10Ks and the Dodgers have a 6-run lead!
Night all
Their pitcher pulled. Bye bye Banda.

D’backs starting pitcher was feckless A Banda.
Dang, Marte. Slap-happy like Dee Gordon there.
Double play, please.
Oh dear. We can’t let down our guard with these guys.
Finally, a first pitch strike for Yu!
I keep wondering who decided the Dbacks should have fourteen different uniforms, all of which are unattractive.
None of them’s so ugly as orange and black, though.
I don’t know, WBB. Those dark gray unis that get progressively darker and darker are pretty grim.
It doesn’t get any uglier than Halloween at TPBTBNL.
Don’t let Lamb beat you, Yu.
Rats.
Darvish is all over the place, but so far the Snakes have helped him out.
Too many ball one, ball two counts.
and three-ball counts.
Not finding his rhythm.
I didn’t get to see Darvish last time. Was he this wild?
Only in the first inning as I remember.
There’s a 5 pitch discrepancy between Gameday and the television. Gameday has him at 44. I wonder which is correct?
Hopefully Gameday.
Barnes steals one for Yu
Barnes with the K.
Kersh eyeing Yu to see if there is an opening to tease him on that at bat.
Which is funny in that Kersh won’t talk when he pitches.
Lots of pitches so far.
But he only used 3 in the top of the inning.
Woot!
97 up and tight
Goldschmidt has an unbelievable eye. He is by far my favorite DBack.
I admire Goldschmidt’s abilities, but I resent the fact that he declined to sign with the Dodgers when they drafted him.
99 in the dirt? Wow, amazed Barnes got that throw off.
Grandal looks quick behind the plate tonight.
Ha!
Barnes does look good.
Darvish searching for the strike zone.
Red is spending a lot of time next to Doc in recent games. Trying to soak in some wisdom for after his playing days?
Taking advantage of Gonzales not in the dugout.
Ouch!!
That was fast.
Kool!
Kike’ has looked good in the few at bats I have seen him get lately.
More XBH than singles this season, 31-19 before that double. Weird.
Rather like Joey Gallo…
Hernandez is one of the best below .230 hitters we’ve ever had.
A lefty killer, and very versatile defensively.
C’mon, Logan. Pick up Cody.
NL Cy Young has three Dodgers at the top of the rankings David Pinto does.
A-Gon and Segedin starting for OKC at SLC tonight on rehab assignments.
At 80-33 the Dodgers are 47 games above .500 for the second time this season. Since the team moved to L.A. in 1958 no Dodgers team has ever been more games above .500. It ties the mark with the 1962 team which, late in that heartbreaking year, was 98-51. Dating back to 1950, the most games that the Dodgers have been above .500 was 56 games in 1953, which was Brooklyn’s best club (in my opinion). The 1953 squad finished 105-49 and lost the World Series in six games to the Yankees.
The first Dodgers team I recall seeing was the 1956 squad v. the Yanquis in the Series. That’s when I became a fan.
Michael Shapiro’s Book about the Dodgers in ’56, “The Last Good Season,” is excellent. It also goes into the issues behind the Dodgers’ move west. The first Dodger team I saw was the ’55 one, not a bad year to start as a 7-year-old in Brooklyn.
Pederson said working with organizational hitting instructor Shawn Wooten the previous two days had a lot to do with his clutch hit, which followed strikeouts in his first two at-bats against Greinke.
“It was really nice. First hit in a long time,” said Pederson. “To have it come up big and help the team win a ballgame is a nice feeling. What’s really big is to get away from the results and sticking to the process. Wooten’s here and I was able to come to the field the past two days and work on a consistent routine no matter what the results are. I have a bad habit of changing stuff and getting away from the process and chasing hits, and it’s not a line for success.”
