Marlins at Dodgers, 7:10 PM PT, TV: SPNLA, FS-F
Miami has lost three in a row and 8 of its last ten (the Dodgers won their last game and 6 of their last ten). The Marlins have given up 35 more runs than they’ve scored (the Dodgers have scored 55 more than they’ve allowed). On the other hand, the Marlins swept a four-game series from the Dodgers last year in Los Angeles. This series is also four games. Cue ominous music.
RHP Edinson Volquez (0-5, 4.41 ERA) tries to dig himself and his team out of their respective holes. The Dodgers counter with LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu (1-5, 4.99 ERA). Volquez just came off the disabled list and went six innings against the Braves, giving up only four hits and two runs. Ryu’s last start was awful; he gave up 10 runs (only five earned), eight hits and six walks to the Rockies in Denver.
A-Gon has been activated from the 10-day DL and Scott Van Slyke has been optioned back to OKC.
If you find yourself in Chinatown and want to walk to Dodger Stadium, here’s the route. Expect a half-hour hike.
This day in Dodgers history:
- 1929 In the doubleheader played at Philadelphia’s Baker Bowl, the teams combine to score a record fifty runs when the Dodgers outlast the Phillies, 20-16, before dropping the nightcap to the home team 8-6. In the opener, Brooklyn’s Johnny Frederick crosses the plate five times, giving him the major league mark of scoring eight runs in two consecutive games.
- 1931 Dodgers’ outfielder Babe Herman hits for the cycle for the first of two times this season. In 1933, as a member of the Cubs, he will again hit for the cycle, making him and Bob Meusel the only major leaguers to have accomplished the feat three times since 1900.
Lineup when available.
Tonight's Dodger lineup vs. Marlins:

Saw the last out and the highlights. Ryu had a wild time out there, didn’t he? And Turner is hopefully just sore and not in need of surgery.
Yippie ki-yi-yay!
Correction: Jansen raised his career batting average to .400 (2-for-5).
Dodgers out of 3rd place in the division.
Nice.
Tied for second.
Our relievers recorded 11 outs tonight, 10 of them by strikeout.
How sweet it is, after last year.
…? Believe we had one of the best pens in the majors last year.
Ah. Was it the previous year? Sorry, brain gone tonight…
Yeah, 2015.
Fish out of water were the Florida hitters.
Woo-HOO!!! Nine pitches. Boom.
We win!
Well the cutter seems to be working.
Not a great night for Bellinger.
His team is winning.
So it is a good night for Turner too?
Cody can come back tomorrow and pick up his team mates if they are not hittting. That’s the way it works. Unfortunately Justin can’t
Hit the ball hard twice, drove in a run and got a BB.
How did Turner get hurt and how serious did it look?
Rounding third base. Looked like a hamstring.
Thanks. And I think he took over the league lead in hitting tonight at .379.
Running the bases. Looked like a hammy so maybe a couple of weeks at least.
Presuming pulled rather than torn.
Looked pulled not torn to me.
Sophisticated video diagnosis…
More like armchair diagnostics from a glass-half-full kind of gal.
Wine glass half empty?
Is this the 4th or 5th time tonight the Dodgers have had the bases loaded?
Yes.
Now 5th or 6th time!
Jansen raises his career batting average to .333 (2-for-6).
To balance out pitchers hitting tonight perhaps Puig could pitch if the Dodgers blow this open.
Kenley’s hit? Flat out hilarious.
I wanna see Kenley hit.
Here he comes.
No bunting!
Well, it’s not the World Series.
Dodgers 5 pitchers tonight: ERA’s starting with the numbers 4,3,2,1, and 0 (but not in that order).
Geronimo!
Phew! Getting Stanton out there is large.
We aren’t exactly loaded with 3rd Basemen that are knocking down the door in the minors. Don’t know who the best option is.
Taylor’s been awfully good lately, but hasn’t played much 3B.
It might work with Forsythe coming back.
What about Derrell Griffith?
Ha!
Segedin’s injury proving to be worse than initially thought.
Maybe time for Thompson to come back. Move Quique back into the infield.
That would be my guess – the Hernandez part at least – as to what the Dodgers do. But I wouldn’t mind Taylor getting a chance as well.
They would be paired at 3rd and second until Logan is back.
Looked like a hamstring.
Our best hitter down. Rats.
Ugh.
Turner down.
Oh no. JT hurt.
Hi all. Finally home from three days away working. Go Dodgers! Ryu had quite a game, it looks like.
Indeed he did. Thrill a minute/inning.
Working on a script or book or something else?
Book plus pitching an eight hour series. Yikes.
Series based on a book?
Yes, but not mine. A book called The Mirror Thief.
Talk about a thrill a minute!
Writing a screenplay?
Hoping to write eight hours! For television.
I read the NYT review, and that sounds like a challenge.
It was/is! We wrote a 40 page treatment and pitched to nine companies. Will keep you posted!
Amazon link.
Not exactly dominant, but interesting.
Anyone here cheering for Anaheim Ducks of Los Angeles in the NHL?
Crickets.
No worries. I am simply honouring my civic duty to ask about hockey at least once during the playoffs.
Penguinos fan myself.
Belated congrats from last year…
Hatcher strikes out both batters he faced. #wonthetrade
I didn’t expect to see Hatcher here.
Normally Romo’s spot for the DP.
Will always be known as the Ryu game.
Well, we know he can’t lose tonight.
Sadly might become the Turner injured game.
How many different ways can Ryu be hit, get a hit, etc?
Pay back? Probably not with a runner already on.
Crazy night for Ryu.
He hits and runs and they hit him and get runs.
Exactly.
Regarding the optioning of SVS. If you are sent down to the minors more than once in the same season, does each time count as a separate option?
Naw.
The measure is option years.
Thanks, Bob.
Joc usually strikes out better than that.
I would be happy if the Dodgers kept their 1-3-1-3 pattern going the rest of the game.
Delivering the eggs and butter.
Thank you Adrian!
Can we at least try to get Turner home this inning.
Consider it done.
I think they always try.
When does Ryu hit again. Lets get some excitement going again.
Ryu still trying to pitch himself out of a spot.
Ha. You didn’t fool me this time Steiner. As soon as you soft talked that hit as a fly ball to the outfield I knew it was gone.
He runs, he leaps, Heeeeeese Superman.
The Ryu Show tonight!
If he doesn’t stay in because of his pitching, maybe he will because of his defense.
And offense.
Chutley is now above the Mendoza line.
Joc’s hit keeps him above it as well,
Crazy to send Ryu there.
But it worked.
Something, something …blind squirrel.
Momentum.
Stripling to have competition as a pinch runner
Ryu lets Joc and Puig know that hitting Volquez is nothing to write home about.
I like it.
Joc needed that one.
Well, just one out of all that. Phew.
A little like the Dodger 1st.
Joc snow-cones one for the final out.
Is Ryu going to pitch himself out of the rotation tonight?
I wouldn’t write him off, but Dodgers do have other options.
Utley with OBP over the past week above .500, which may explain why he is leading off.
I watched the walking to Dodger Stadium video this afternoon. Surprisingly I got a bit emotional when they arrived at the Stadium.
Man, I’ve got to get there some day!
Start walking!
Ha!

It’s a great place to be but a bear getting there!
That’s what I’ve heard. But the video gave me a sense that it might be doable somehow.
Twinkies take second game of DH v. Rox, so Dodgers can gain half a game tonight.
In response to a question from the last thread about Griffith leading off in 1988 and batting below .200, according to Baseball Reference he batted lead off 14 times with the last taking place in September.
Let’s not confuse Derrell Griffith and Alfredo Griffin (both did win rings as Dodgers, though).
I have a Derrell Griffith baseball card..
Derrell Griffith brings back a lot of good memories. Called up in June, his rookie year was ’64, the year I got my driver’s license in L.A. I remember Vinnie liked him. Griffith could hit — .290 in 238 ABs, but he couldn’t field! He had 21 errors in 91 chances at third, a fielding percentage of .769. Counting some OF play, his overall fielding percentage was .827. In ’65, he hit .171 in only 41 ABs and the next year went 1-for-15, before being traded to the Mets in the off-season with Tommy Davis for Jim Hickman and Ron Hunt. I was a huge Davis fan and hated that trade. Griffith never played in the majors again.
I was a big Tommy D fan, too, but after the broken ankle he was never quite the same – though he lasted quite a while.
At a Dodgers Fantasy Camp I attended in Vero Beach, Tommy said that the doctors said he need far more time to recover fully, but that the Dodgers didn’t abide by that medical advice, hence he never again was the same player he had been. I think he was on a potential Hall of Fame path. Davis did have a fine career in the AL, mostly as a designated hitter. He is a genuine guy and a gentleman.
