Giants at Dodgers, 7:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA, CSBA
The most-anticipated series of the season until the next one between these two teams begins tonight. It starts with the Giants’ Madison Bumgarner (12-7, 2.25 ERA) and his home-run bat facing the Dodgers’ Kenta Maeda (12-7, 3.29 ERA), whose 5-43 (.136) average and .346 OPS aren’t going to scare anyone. Bumgarner is 0-1 with a 4.09 ERA in two starts vs. the Dodgers this season, while Maeda is 1-0 with a .047 ERA in one start against the Giants, giving up one earned run over seven innings back in April.
Personnel news of a sort: Rob Segedin had to be places in a hurry after getting off the plane from Cincinnati:

Presumably there’s a replacement for Segedin waiting in the wings if his wife goes into labor mid-game.

One of my nephews is an outstanding fast-pitch softballer, and even attended some baseball tryouts for the Pirates. While he’s still relatively young, though, he’s way behind the Cuban kids you find down there now – too far to catch up, really.
Woke up this morning to a Dodger win. My thought for the day is how does a player like Rob Segedin not get even a cup of coffee with the Yankees? We had Clint Robinson up with us. We had Russ Mitchell and John Lindsey up for a few abs so how does this guy not even get called up for an injured player? Well enough of that. i have three hours to kill so i am going to sit down and knit a sweater. (If you read McCC you will know what I mean.)
Never showed much above AA when he was with the Yanks, but had a good ST with us and was banging the ball at OKC. Whole lotta players in the same boat.
The line about the misplaced pine tar made me literally guffaw. He is hilarious.

We win!
Woo-HOO!!!
The Span HR was annoying, but it’s satisfying to see Pagán make the last out.
Can’t wait to read McCovey Chronicles tonight…
I’m looking forward to it, but will wait until the morning.
Brisbee may as well.
Seager is starting to get used to big league pitching…
let the hot bats continue
Yes please!
Toles and Segedin are rolling!
Joc with the blue bee striped stirrups
Toles is on a high!
Blanton not looking pleased about being relieved. Suddenly this is turning into an ASG with all the player changes going on.
Glad I am not keeping score.
But set up nicely to strengthen defense and bring up three left handed batters. (And Bochy counters with Lopez).
I got Steinered on Seager’s fly ball, and then he got the number of outs wrong twice.
Just getting home. Heard two more come in!
I think my fav part of SF is their bullpen.
Back and forth. Dodgers bend but still don’t break.
Why didn’t Libby come in sooner to face the lefty PH?
I haven’t seen a single pitch, except for video replays on MLBTV, but it sounds as if Maeda was pretty shaky.
Yes but in some ways so was MadBum. Or if not shaky, at least he was shaken.
I’ve always thought he was a decent No. 2-3 starter with a really nasty temperament.
Shaken and stirred
Seager’s 3rd run scored of the game!
Butter and egg.
Made a cake!
Maeda was pumped to get the k of Pence and out of that inning.
I liked the pattern where we scored a run every inning. Can we bring that back again next time we bat.
This game is tense. Glad the Dodgers still have the lead.
Nice recovery that inning.
What a throw by Yas!
Kenta seems uncomfortable. Usually doesn’t walk too many people.
Lots of wild pitches as well.
I really don’t like Panik.
He’s far from the jerkiest Gnat.
But he is the scoreiest against the Dodgers.
So much for being set up for the double play. Maeda with the wild pitch.
Home run for baby!
On consecutive days.
Jeez, poor kid is probably going to end up being named Homer.
Or “Dinger.”
No. His wife’s name is “Robin” and they’re calling the kid “Robinson.”
Gotta get this guy while we have an opportunity.
Grandal is taking good swings
Unless he pulls an outside pitch
No one runs on Pagan! (They walk home).
They could amputate and nobody would notice.
No one cut off the wide weak throw either.
Yet Justin didn’t advance… (May have lost a run there)
They could hop and still make it.
Gotta like that
Seager hits the unhittable southpaw.
And Turner follows up!
Hi everyone!
I’ve been MIA from this site, but not in thought. The real world has interfered, but I’ve been following the ups and downs and ups of the Dodgers and thought of writing numerous times.
Not sure how frequently I’ll be able to visit, but yesterday’s game was another of the many where I said ‘this time I have to write” – well, this time I did.
It seemed like the format of the worst of games for LA this year: one facet of their game did well while another let them down. But this time the offense would not be denied and overcame shortcomings from SP & bullpen. What a great victory to go into this series vs. SF.
Go, Dodgers – win for Vin!
Always nice to hear from you Bob.
Thanks, Dave!
We’ve missed you! Good game to check in with, yes?
Thanks, RBI!
As it turned out, yes, a VERY good game!
I was afraid it would turn into one of those nightmare games, but the bats seem to be for real now — everyone wants to be part of the fun!
Who’dve thunk that the weakest part of a Dodger team is their pitching?
Will anybody miss him?
sounds promising/ hopeful

Hendley called it… https://twitter.com/truebluela/status/768225909417578496
Didn’t know that Culberson was around. Last time he started over Seager at SS, but that was a long time ago (recall that he did quite well against Bum).
It wasn’t v. BadGums, but I do recall http://m.mlb.com/video/topic/26668474/v580878783/ladsf-culberson-drives-in-the-goahead-run-in-10th
and he also made two great defensive plays too, one in the infield, one in the outfield

http://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2016/8/23/12610432/giants-dodgers-series-preview-gulp Grant’s series preview.
The guy has a way of surmising what is important, unless it isn’t.
Always fun to read, but best and most incisive when the Gnats lose.
Let’s hope we read another one of those after tonight’s game.
Dodgers are hitting well, but they’ll have to face somewhat better pitching than in Cincy. I’m not a BadGums believer – he’s not the frontline ace a lot of people seem to think he is – but the Dodgers do have trouble with lefties. I can remember when the acquisition of Shawn Green was the corrective to an overwhelmingly RHH lineup.
Guessing that Quique with 3 dingers in 16 pa against him will get a start, though Joc has done well also in limited appearances against him.
