1915 Pirates' third baseman Honus Wagner reaches Robins hurler Jeff Pfeffer for a grand slam in the eighth inning, helping Pittsburgh beat Brooklyn at Forbes Field, 8-2. The inside-the-park round-tripper makes the 41-year-old infielder the oldest player to hit a home run with the bases full, a record that will last until 1985.

1996 After a mild heart attack last month, Tommy Lasorda, the 68-year-old Dodger manager, announces his retirement due to his health. The future Hall of Fame skipper was named the National League Manager of the Year in 1983 and 1988, leading Los Angeles to four pennants and two World Series championships during his 21 seasons at the helm.

  2. Bucs bit Snakes with ninth inning comeback and four in tenth, then hung on. Gnats managed to hang onto lead over Rox. Dodgers gain a game each on SD and AZ, and SF doesn't matter anyway.

  3. Orioles burn Fryers 8-5. According to Gameday. this is how it ended: "Jurickson Profar grounds into unassisted double play, shortstop Gunnar Henderson. Tyler Wade out at second. Jurickson Profar out at first." Huh?

  4. White Sox are 27-81. They have played 2/3 of their season and have lost exactly 75% of their games. On pace to win 40 or 41 and lose 122 or 121.

  5. Dodgers, 62 – 44
    1st NL West
    vs
    Astros, 55 – 49
    1st AL West

    Ryan, RHP, #77

    VS
    Arrighetti, RHP, #41
    4 – 8, 5.65 ERA

    DH Ohtani L
    LF Hernández, T. R
    2B Lux L
    RF Heyward L
    3B Hernández, K. R
    1B Biggio L
    CF Outman L
    C Barnes R
    SS Ahmed R

  6. The trade deadline will be over before the Dodgers play again.
Who will be gone and who will arrive?

  7. If Outman can adjust his swing so that he stops missing the pitch high in the strike zone and umps stop calling pitches wide of the strike zone against him, he should get back to where he was at the beginning and end of last year. Roberts also has to stop playing with the outfield and keep Hernandez, Outman, and Pages on the field. Heyward has been really slumping.

    • I think I heard that the cumulative MLB batting average is .243. Barnes might get there.

  8. Given Ryan, Wrobleski, and Knacks performance, I find it difficult to think the Dodgers would be better off with Skabol or Crochet by the time the playoffs begin.

    • Depends on the cost, of course. Think all three have innings limitations, though.

    • None of those rooks, especially Wrobleski, has pitched very much. He's thrown only 60 innings in AA and 10 in AAA after spending all of 2023 in High-A. Promising, but not definitive.

      • I'm thinking a few of the pitchers on the IL will be back and those three can rest more going forward.

    • A good trade and here is another one==Jackson Ferris and minor league outfielder Zyhir Hope from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for right-handed pitcher Yency Almonte and infielder Michael Busch.

    • Roberts apparently sending Ryan back out for the 6th even though his pitch count is already his highest for a game.

  9. 41 strikeouts in 20 innings in Houston, including 5 in 2 innings today. Have we no batting coaches?

    • They were saying that they have achieved (?) some sort of franchise record in that department. Two of our lesser K guys not in the lineup.

  10. Objects in mirror are closer than they appear. Dodgers are reeling and the Padres are surging.

    • 6-3 since the All Star break is not reeling. Friars have done better, but had the benefit of playing a series against the Nats.

1991 Expos right-hander Dennis Martinez pitches a perfect game, defeating Los Angeles 2-0 at Dodger Stadium. Ron Hassey becomes the first backstop ever to catch two perfect games, as he also was behind the plate on May 15, 1981, when Indian hurler Len Barker faced 27 batters, beating the Blue Jays, 3-0.
