Game 82, 2022

Cubs at Dodgers, 7:10 PM PDT, TV: Marquee Sports Network, SPNLA

RHP Mark Leiter Jr. (2-2, 4.85 ERA) pitches for the baby Bruins and RHP Tony Gonsolin (10-0, 1.54 ERA) takes the hill for the Dodgers. Leiter came in when the Cubs’ starter had to leave after throwing seven pitches on Saturday and threw 5 1/3 innings of four hit, one run relief. Gonsolin has continued his remarkable season for the Dodgers.

Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1953 The Dodgers set a major league mark for the most consecutive games with a home run by a team with at least one round-tripper in their 24 contests. Brooklyn starter Preacher Roe hits the record-breaking homer with a third-inning blast in the team’s 9-5 victory over Pittsburgh at Forbes Field. (Note: this record has been broken by seven teams since then, most recently in 2019 by the NY Yankees, who did it in 31 straight games ending July 1)
  • 1998 Jeff Shaw becomes the first player to participate in an All-Star Game wearing a uniform for a team he hasn’t yet played for when he works an inning, allowing three hits and a run pitching for the National League squad before appearing in a regular season game for the Dodgers. The 32 year-old closer, who posted a 1.81 ERA along with 23 saves in the first half of the season for the Reds, was traded three days ago by Cincinnati to Los Angeles for Paul Konerko and Dennys Reyes.
  • 2004 Kazuhisa Ishii tosses a one-hitter in the Dodgers’ 11-0 defeat of Arizona. The 30 year-old Japanese southpaw retires the first 12 batters he faces before issuing a leadoff walk to Luis Gonzalez, which is followed with a single by Shea Hillenbrand, but then the left-hander proceeds to mow down 15 consecutive D-Backs to finish his masterpiece.

Lineups when available.

  1. Baseball’s first Brazilian is married to the daughter of ex-Gnat Atlee Hammaker (famous for surrendering first slam ever in an ASG).

  2. Giants didn’t score in the 10th. Never got the designated runner to 3rd.

  3. On another note some/most of you planning to go to the all star game?

    • I am not. Too expensive. In the old days the stars often played nine innings. No longer. I went to the 1985 game at Candlestick. Sat in the left field stands. I think the tickets were $40 each.

  4. Giants tied the game with two outs in the ninth in San Diego. It’s 1-1 going into the 10th.

      • They said side issue, the vision looked like it was under the ribs

          • All going well, busy as usual. I’ve spend the last few days weeding and re-tanbarking our gardens. Winter has been pretty wet but not super cold (12 C) today. We haven’t had the flooding that Sydney and northern New South Wales has had.

          • I’m just south of Canberra, we sometimes get snow on the mountains around us. Sometimes snow drifts in but it has only settled in our yard twice in 15 years and not for long (we are at 750 metres)

          • We have the New South Wales snowfields about an hour or two drive from here (Perisher and Thredbo). Apparently they are having a great season so far.

  5. SD is Paddling the Gnats 1-0 after six. I don’t care a lot which team wins or loses, but it wouldn’t bother me if the Gnats steroids boy Webb were the losing pitcher.

    • Sad news. A key to Dodgers’ success. Had a big role in signing of the Valenzuela, Puig, Urias, Victor González and many others. Brito played several years in the minors. He was 87.

  6. The Dodgers, at 52-29, have now played 81 games, or half of their schedule. If the second half duplicates the first half exactly, which we know it won’t — I think they will do better — the club will finish the season at 104-58. As far as individual performances go, Gonsolin would end the year at 20-0 and Anderson at 18-2. Pretty doubtful in both cases, at least to their winning percentages. As for the hitters, Trea would drive in 118 runs and hit 22 homers and Freeman 100 RBIs and 20 HRs. I do think that Betts will be above 30 in homers. For those who missed time with injuries, e.g. Kershaw, Muncy and Betts, it is hard to double the numbers of the first half. And JT is on the upswing and I expect a better second half. Bellinger remains a question mark. Still, it’s fun to speculate.

      • I was at the game he lost, at the LA Coliseum, September 11, 1959. Second game of a DH. Dodgers got two in the bottom of the 9th to win, 5-4. Face was 17-0 at the time. The Pirates had drafted him out of the Dodgers’ farm system. Face is now 94.

    • As good as the first half has been, there is still room for improvement. Mostly from the offense.

  7. Cubbies starter is the son of a former Gnat, and nephew of a former Yanqui.
