Game 59, 2022

Dodgers at Giants, 4:15 PM PDT, TV: Fox

LHP Clayton Kershaw (4-0, 1.80 ERA) comes off the IL, where he’d been with a sacroiliac inflammation. He’ll start today in place of Urías, who’s getting an extra day of rest before starting tomorrow. He’ll face the Giants’ LHP Sam Long (0-1, 2.35 ERA). This will be his 12th appearance but just his 4th start this season. He’s gone no longer than three innings in any game yet.

This day in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1957 The Dodgers’ Roy Campanella surpasses former Cub and Giant backstop Gabby Hayes to establish a new National League mark when he hits his 237th career round-tripper as a catcher. Campy’s historic home run comes off Ray Crone in the seventh inning of Brooklyn’s 7-2 loss to the Braves at Ebbets Field.
  • 1972 LA outfielders Manny Mota and Willie Davis both hit inside-the-park homers down the foul lines at Dodger Stadium off Bucs’ starter Bruce Kison. Roberto Clemente’s seventh inning home run over the fence proves to be the difference in Pittsburgh’s 7-5 victory, their 21st win the last 26 games.

Also, in 1938 In the first of two consecutive no-hitters he will hurl, Johnny Vander Meer keeps the Boston Bees hitless in Cincinnati’s 3-0 victory at Crosley Field. The Reds’ southpaw, in the first night game played in Brooklyn, continues his no-no mojo four days later by beating the Dodgers, 6-0, without giving up a hit in the Ebbets Field contest.

Lineups when available.

  1. Cody reminds me of Bodie, the once flourishing gold mining town in California that is a ghost town.

      • Don’t really think of DS as an historical site, despite it being the third-oldest stadium in baseball. Apparently they found some old signage and other things in storage there and sought to incorporate some of it into the refurbishing. Retro 50’s and 60’s as it were.

  2. Rockies beat the Padres, 6-2, in the second game of their split doubleheader. The Dodgers are still in first by one-half game over San Diego.

    • But how? We have only three on the bench. In the old days we’d have a bench of six or more. The best he can do now is rearrange the deck chairs.

  3. Sad, but I have little confidence in JT — despite his RBI total — and Cody — despite his sometimes home runs.

    • Sure, but for JT to have those sorts of RBI totals, given his overall subpar hitting, means that he has been dynamite with RISP. To the tune of OPS+162.

  4. If San Diego wins the second game of their split DH with Colorado tonight, we will be in second place for the first time since April 30.

  5. A big difference in this eighth inning was Lux and Bett swing at ball fours and Giants hitters not.

    • It surprised me. I thought it was a pop fly. The replay showed that he had a better swing than it looked in real time.

  6. I am about to dine with my wife. I expect all of you to provide the Dodgers with a lead before dessert. Thanking you in advance.

  7. I wonder if any of those partiers on that black yacht would dive into the water to retrieve a homerun ball.

  8. Maybe Turner should go to the mound and catch the return throw from the catcher for Almonte.

    • Perhaps that is what we need to shake us from our lethargy of last night and today.

  9. I’ve been making cole slaw and juicing oranges and making lime simple syrup to keep from my own nonstop whining but now here I am. Grrrrrr!

  10. I am truly disliking this game so far with the ineffective Dodger offense and the nonstop yadayada.

  11. Started a load of laundry in this apartment building. $3 per load, $1.50 per dryer load. Gotta buy a card and fill it with cash to use in the washers/dryers. Last time I used a laundromat-style setting was 1978 and it was either a quarter or fifty cents per load then.

  12. We need a big hit or two with runners on in this game. The two teams I most dislike losing to are the other two NL franchises in California.

    • By and large, with some exceptions, it has been very frustrating to be a Dodger fan for the last couple of weeks. (And, yes, I am also grumpy).

      • Terrible home plate umpiring as well – and it feels more aimed at our pitchers. But that could just be me.

  13. I am so tired of announcers calling a pitch down the middle of the strike zone “center cut.” When did that start? (I am not a vegetarian.)

  14. I wonder if the Giants could trade Yastrzemski to Boston and get more back than they could from another team. He is the Grandson of Boston’s Yastrzemski.

  15. Rox blow one to Pads. In extras, with Machado ghost runner on 2B, a wild pitch and a catcher’s throwing error with two out.
