Game 57, 2022

Dodgers at White Sox, 11:10 AM PDT, TV: MLBN (out-of-market only), NBCSCH, SPNLA

LHP Tyler Anderson (7-0, 2.59 ERA) pitches for the Dodgers and RHP Dylan Cease (4-2, 3.39 ERA) goes for the Pale Hose. With Gonsolin Anderson is the other surprising member of the Dodgers’ rotation this season. Cease missed his team’s trip to Toronto last week due to his unvaccinated status.

Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1919 Dodger standout pitcher Rube Marquard breaks his leg running the bases, ending his season with a record of 3-3. The hard-throwing southpaw will finish his 18-year Hall of Fame career in 1925, after compiling a 201-177 record along with an ERA of 3.08.
  • 1973 Right-fielder Rusty Staub becomes the pivot man in a very unusual double play during a 4-2 Mets victory against the Dodgers at Shea Stadium. Racing in from the outfield, ‘Le Grand Orange’ gets a throw near second base from first baseman John Milner and tags Davey Lopes, who was picked-off from first, and then throws home to nail Tom Paciorek trying to score from second during the P-1B-SS-1B-2B-1B-2B-RF-C rundown.
  • 1990 Eddie Murray ties Mickey Mantle’s major league mark, hitting a homer from both sides of the plate for the tenth time in his career. The switch-hitting first baseman’s second home run of the game, batting left-handed against Eric Show, proves to be the eventual winning run in the Dodgers’ 5-4 victory over San Diego in the 11th inning at Jack Murphy Stadium.

  1. The Padres are idle today, so the Dodgers will be 2 games up on them and either 5 1/2 or 6 1/2 over the Giants when they open a three-game series at Baghdad-by-the-Bay tomorrow night. That was what the late, great San Francisco columnist Herb Caen called San Francisco. My wife worked with him at the Chronicle while I was at the San Francisco Examiner during the 1980s.

  2. While walking my dog, I am glad I didn’t follow the game pitch-by-pitch. Whew!

  3. Left for The Home Depot, returned and started reading all the old comments. We were a little worried. Or, did we know what was going to happen in the 8th?

  4. Four or or more runs in two consecutive innings. When is the last time that the Dodgers did that? I have no idea.

  5. The Giants made three errors and the Rockies scored three runs before anyone was out in the top of the 4th.

  6. Glad to be wrong about batting Muncy clean up today. I am very happy for Max.

  7. I need to take the dog on a long walk. But his leash won’t be as long as the one Larussa afforded Cease….Get us some more runs folks.

    • Pretty hot down there today? I’ll take our guy to the dog park when this is over.

      • Yes, it is hot. I decided to wait one more inning before taking the dog out, and I am glad that I did.

  8. Cease had thrown more than 100 pitches in each of his last two starts, but today’s 110 is his most for this season.

  9. Checking ever so briefly to say this.

Will wonders ever cease? No – but Dylan will – and now has!

      • Man of La Mancha wisdom from Sancho: “Whether the stone hits the pitcher or the pitcher hits the stone, it always turns out worse for the pitcher.” In that case, not a throwing pitcher, a water pitcher…

  10. When is the last time that we won a day game at the home park of the White Sox? The 1959 World Series?

      • I fondly remember the ’59 Series. Dodgers won Game Two and Game Six (both day games) at Comiskey. Larry Sherry was MVP.

  11. Tyler was due a rough outing I guess. Maybe the bullpen can stop the bleeding and we can start some scoring.

  12. When I was in grade school, it was common knowledge that Duke Snider had 99 foul balls in one AB.

  13. Anderson’s first run allowed in a while. Baseball gods definitely involved. Weirdest triple ever.

  14. Rarely see Mookie flummoxed like that, but what a weird hit. Bouncing atop the railing?!?!?!

  15. Maybe Freddy should let Max play first for a few games while he act as the hitting instructor for Lux and Bellinger. Lux seems like hs is copying Freddy’s approach. Freddy did this last year and then came on really strong in the second half.

    • Did this meaning start hitting and not being hitting coach. Words matter.

    • Should have kept going on his practice jump. It had to be a better jump than the one he got thrown out. Grandal did make a perfect throw though.

  16. Just checking in. Lawn mowed, weeks pulled. Baseball on.

First thought I had looking at the lineup was Muncy already back at cleanup?

      • Seems to be the way of things these days. I think it has always been that way and is now magnified because they put the strike zone box on the TV screen. We didn’t have that box in years past so our perception was more subjective. Think how many bad calls Maddux and Glavin got.

        • I know. It’s not just my perception, once the box agrees. Then I get doubly frustrated!

          • Yep. It is very frustrating when you can plainly see a bad call. I am still coming to grips with it. I bet the umpires hate that box on TV.
