Game 47, 2022

Dodgers at Diamondbacks, 1:00 PM PDT, BS Arizona, BS Arizona Extra, SPNLA

The Dodgers’ LHP Tyler Anderson (5-0, 3.30 ERA) meets RHP Zach Davies (2-2, 4.81 ERA) of the D-Backs. Anderson is one of a very few pitchers with five or more wins and no losses at this point in the season. Davies has been slumping; in his last three starts he’s given up three, five and four runs and gone no more than 5 2/3 innings just once in that span.

On this date in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1905 According to legend, Dodger hurler Elmer Stricklett introduces the spitball, helping Brooklyn to beat the Giants, 4-3. Prior to the 1921 season, the spitball will be totally banned, except for 17 existing spitballers who are allowed to keep throwing the slippery pitch legally until they are retired, including Burleigh Grimes, who will be the last player to legally throw a doctored pitch before retiring in 1934.
  • 1928 At Ebbets Field, Bill Terry hits for the cycle to pace the Giants to a 12-5 victory over the Robins (Dodgers). The New York first baseman is the first player in major league history to include a grand slam as part of the cycle.
  • 1956 In a 10-1 loss to the Dodgers at Forbes Field, Dale Long is held hitless by Don Newcombe, ending his consecutive-game home run streak. The Pirates’ first baseman had established a new major league mark by homering in the last eight Pittsburgh contests.
  • 1979 At Dodger Stadium, Dusty Baker, Rick Sutcliffe, Steve Garvey, Gary Thomasson, Derrel Thomas, Joe Ferguson, and Davey Lopes set a team record by hitting seven home runs as the Dodgers crush the Reds, 17-6.
  • 2000 At the age of 104, Fred Roberts, the oldest living Dodger fan, makes his first visit to Dodger Stadium. Wearing a jersey with the number 104, the World War I veteran cheers as Shawn Green’s sixth inning grand slam helps to beat Al Leiter and the Mets, 4-1.

  1. There we see a typical Kevin Pillar AB. Overpowered by a guy throwing 88.

      • Last year he had 81 K’s (about 25 percent) and 11 walks, with an OBP of .277. Muncy’s OBP this year is still .327, career .359, and he is far more valuable defensively.

        • Pillar is considered to be a good defensive player. ,991 career FLD%.

          • When your range is so limited, your fielding percentage tends to be higher. Unlike Muncy, he has zero versatility.

  2. Moved into apartment downtown for 2-3 months while shopping for new house/selling old house. Just got desktop back up, although I’m on wIfI rather than ethernet. I’ve forgotten how to hook these machines up!

Hooray for yet another Dodgers win!

      • I’ve had SPNLA for years and still do. The neighborhood is nice and the three-building complex (23- stories each) has a lot of walkable grounds and a pool someone else pays to have maintained, so that’s a plus. CVS and Safeway in walking distance for me as I was 20 years ago, but the COPD is getting worse, so I’m gonna have to drive to those places.

  3. Davies gets the strike three call. Maybe the ump will give it to Anderson the next time.

  4. Meanwhile, at The Litterbox, Machado is missing his second straight game with “tennis elbow.”

    • I am also. Pillar won the Giants’ Willie Mac (McCovey) Award in 2019 for being the club’s most inspirational player. It came in a vote of coaches, players, trainers and fans.

      • That on a team that went 77-85. In context, of course, the .293 OBP must have been especially inspiring.

          • I am a realist. If Pillar is around longer than a few days, the Dodgers could be in trouble.

          • Actually, I would call you more of a contrarian…So, who would you have called up? I guess we could be stuck with McKinney, Raley, or Sousa. I am willing to give Pillar a shot. I don’t see any better options right now.

          • Problem is, Dodgers don’t have the depth they had with Quique and others in the organization. Pillar is a vacancy in the lineup.

  5. Anderson and Gonsolin are a combined 10-1. Who saw that coming? I certainly didn’t.

      • Ha! I wonder at what point in the season, if they continue to pitch in the same fashion, is it no longer surprising?

  7. Dodgers gained ground on everybody else in the division yesterday, thanks to a late Pads meltdown. Today, unfortunately, the Gnats have come from behind in the eighth, but they could still give it away.
