Game 20, 2022

Tigers at Dodgers, 7:10 PM PDT, TV: BS Detroit, MLBN (out-of-market only), SPNLA

The visiting Tigers give the ball to RHP Beau Brieske (0-1, 5.40 ERA); the 24-year-old will be making his second big league start. He’ll face the Dodgers’ LHP Clayton Kershaw (3-0, 2.65 ERA), who’s ten years older and fifteen years into a Hall of Fame career.

Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1940 The Dodgers tie the major league mark for consecutive wins from the beginning of the season with style as James ‘Tex’ Carleton no-hits the Reds, 3-0, for the team’s ninth straight victory since Opening Day.
  • 1944 In the first game of a doubleheader split, first baseman Phil Weintraub gets 11 RBIs, and player-manager Mel Ott scores six runs, drawing five walks in the Giants’ 26-8 rout of the Dodgers. Brooklyn wins the nightcap 5-4 in a game shortened due to darkness.
  • 1988 Dave Winfield ties the major league RBI record for April established by Dodger infielder Ron Cey in 1977 and matched by Dale Murphy of the Braves in 1985. The right fielder, who was on base at least once in every game, drives in his 28th and 29th runs of the month in the Yankees’ 15-3 rout of Texas in New York.

  1. Oh Barnesie. Show a little patience. Maybe shoulda brought Will Smith in there? Frustrating!

  2. I turned on the game in the 9th inning. One run and four hits against the Tigers? So, five of our seven losses are against Colorado, Arizona and Detroit. Not good, to put it mildly.

  3. Six of the 9 Dodger regulars are hitting .240 or less. Which can either be muttered at when they aren’t scoring runs (like tonight) or marvelled at when you realize how many runs they have scored so far this season (just not tonight).

    • All but two have OPS higher than league average, which correlates better than AVE with run scoring.

  4. Kershaw is currently 150th all time in career wins with 188. He could possibly jump up to around the 120th spot this year.

  5. 74 more strikeouts for Kershaw – and he will pass Frank Tanana for 25th all time. Then next up would be Cy Young at 2803 k’s.

  6. His kids were going wild. Imagine hearing an entire stadium screaming and clapping for your dad.

    • I think I can more easily imagine a stadium screaming and clapping for my son. Lol

  7. Brieske is a fun name for a pitcher in my opinion.
    “How is the pitcher doing?”
“Great. He is pitching Brieske tonight!”

There’s something there that works for me.

  8. Kershaw could get the record here – and go back to the dugout upset about giving up a run.

  9. Effective pitching in the first 2 innings by Kershaw – 8 pitches in the 1st, 9 in the 2nd.

  10. Alright Clayton – hope you get this thing in the first 3 innings – and maybe even get to 2700 career k’s tonight!

  11. Nats out to an early lead on the Gnats. 2-0 in the 3rd. Hope they can find a way to up end the Gnats.
