Game 110, 2021

Angels at Dodgers, 7:10 PM PDT, TV: Bally Sports West, MLBN (out-of-market only), SPNLA

LHP Patrick Sandoval (3-5, 3.38 ERA) pitches for the visiting Angels and LHP David Price (4-1, 3.55 ERA)) takes the mound for the Dodgers.

This day in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1981 The players approved a split-season format necessitated by the seven-week strike. The Yankees, A’s, Phillies, and Dodgers are declared the first-half champions and will be automatically qualified for the divisional series.
  • 2016 Giancarlo Stanton drives a pitch thrown by Rockies starter Chad Bettis deep into the Rockpile seats, a 504-foot blast that becomes the longest round-tripper in the 21-year-old history of Coors Field. The Miami Marlins slugger’s fifth-inning solo shot in the team’s 12-6 loss surpasses the 496-footer hit in 1997 by Dodger catcher Mike Piazza off current Colorado bullpen coach Darren Holmes.

Great moments in labor-management relations: In 1908 Detroit outfielder Ty Cobb gets married, having departed the Tigers three days ago to participate in the ceremony without the team’s permission. The 21 year-old Georgia Peach’s six-day defection during a pennant race will be described by club co-owner Frank Navin as the most arrogant act he had ever heard of in baseball. (Note: The Tigers got to the World Series anyway. They lost to the Cubs, the last time the Chicago team would win a World Series until 2016.)

Lineup when available.

  1. I don’t see why Roberts didn’t start Urias on Friday. He would have been or regular rest and we would have had Price available in the bullpen. I was thinking that yesterday before the game started.

  2. Might want to reconsider using Cleavinger in extra inning games.

It takes a true team effort to lose so many such games in a row. The pitching has been a mix of rookies getting thrust into high-leverage spots — Garrett Cleavinger lost three extra-inning games in an 11-day span. Kenley Jansen has lost two extra-inning games. So has Jimmy Nelson, including Friday night. Blake Treinen lost one, too.

  3. I think we all know the odds of this ending well are not good. Gotta break this extra innings slump.

  4. Two-run single by reliever puts Snakes ahead 6-5 in the fourth. He then steals second.

  5. I still don’t see why Roberts didn’t PH for Pujols against a righty and Beaty on the bench. He’s supposed to be so into the analytics. Geez, that is analytics 101.

  6. How many times tonight did we fail to bring in a runner from third base with fewer than two outs?

  7. And I used to think of extra innings as “free baseball.” For the Dodgers this year, however, these games are extremely costly.

  8. 1-12 in extra innings; 13-20 in one-run games. Tonight’s game fits both categories.

  9. I don’t know if the gnats made a deal with the devil or we are just snake-bit, but we can’t seem to close the gap.

    • I know. It’s absurd at this point. Remember that season where Kersh couldn’t get out of the fourth without giving up a bunch of runs (I think it was Kersh in the fourth… or was it sixth)? Anyway, feels like that.

        • It was Bellinger’s play, but he seemed to shy away with Muncy running fast toward him. Even had Muncy caught it, he would have been out of position to throw the runner out at the plate had the runner tagged….In any event, we’ve seen this kind of defense by the Dodgers far too often, and they gave the batter a hit on the play.

          • I think you have to score it a hit, but Bellinger’s an elite outfielder who somehow hesitated.

  10. And now Ohtani is up. Just imagine where we’d be in the standings if we’d won even half these extra inning games?

  11. This feels all too familiar. Extra innings, with a chance to advance on the gnats. So probably we will lose.

  12. Dodgers Extra innings Record
    Overall: 1-11

    Home: 0-4
    Road: 1-7

    0-1 vs AZ
    0-2 vs CHC
    0-1 vs CIN
    0-2 vs COL
    0-1 vs MIA
    0-1 vs MIL
    0-1 vs OAK
    1-1 vs SD
    0-1 vs SFG

    Runs scored: 13
    Runs allowed: 24

Basically getting out scored 2-1 in extras
(3-1 if you take out the one 5 run inning)

Dodger 10-17 in extra inning games in 1967
    (73-89)

  13. Let’s do this, Dodgers! Quick top of the 9th followed by a walk off in the bottom of the inning. (Do I hear an echo?)

  14. Let’s do this, Dodgers! Quick top of the 8th followed by many runs in the bottom of the inning. (Do I hear an echo?)

  15. Imagine a batter getting hit with time being called. If any pitcher could manage it – Joe Kelly is a good bet.

  16. Well, technically that was a strike, but who’s gonna blame the Ump for calling it a ball?

    • The ump did get a bit distracted. And it’s hard to call it when you are in the dirt. Fortunately he is ok.

  17. Let’s do this, Dodgers! Quick top of the 7th followed by many runs in the bottom of the inning.

  18. On the biright side, in other league, the Twinkies have beaten the Asterisks for the second straight night.

    • Presumably he starts with the pitcher next inning (unless the Dodgers knock him out).

  19. Wonder if Mookie will be in this game much longer. He looked hurt running going 1st to 3rd.

  20. The Giants have tied the Brewers, 1-1, in the 6th and are playing very good baseball. There, I have put it on the tee for you, WBB.

      • Nelson had been very effective, too.

Random fact of the day: He went to Niceville High School in Niceville, Florida. The town’s original name was “Boggy.”

        • Excellent news about Turner No. 2….Nelson’s loss for the season will hurt. Gonzalez’s not as much, but sorry to see either of them on the IL.

  21. Beerguys have taken an early lead over the Gnats, and have one of their best pitchers going.
