Angels at Dodgers, 7:10 PM PDT, TV: Bally Sports West, MLBN (out-of-market only), SPNLA
LHP Patrick Sandoval (3-5, 3.38 ERA) pitches for the visiting Angels and LHP David Price (4-1, 3.55 ERA)) takes the mound for the Dodgers.
This day in Dodgers’ history:
- 1981 The players approved a split-season format necessitated by the seven-week strike. The Yankees, A’s, Phillies, and Dodgers are declared the first-half champions and will be automatically qualified for the divisional series.
- 2016 Giancarlo Stanton drives a pitch thrown by Rockies starter Chad Bettis deep into the Rockpile seats, a 504-foot blast that becomes the longest round-tripper in the 21-year-old history of Coors Field. The Miami Marlins slugger’s fifth-inning solo shot in the team’s 12-6 loss surpasses the 496-footer hit in 1997 by Dodger catcher Mike Piazza off current Colorado bullpen coach Darren Holmes.
Great moments in labor-management relations: In 1908 Detroit outfielder Ty Cobb gets married, having departed the Tigers three days ago to participate in the ceremony without the team’s permission. The 21 year-old Georgia Peach’s six-day defection during a pennant race will be described by club co-owner Frank Navin as the most arrogant act he had ever heard of in baseball. (Note: The Tigers got to the World Series anyway. They lost to the Cubs, the last time the Chicago team would win a World Series until 2016.)

NPUT
I don’t see why Roberts didn’t start Urias on Friday. He would have been or regular rest and we would have had Price available in the bullpen. I was thinking that yesterday before the game started.
Might want to reconsider using Cleavinger in extra inning games.
It takes a true team effort to lose so many such games in a row. The pitching has been a mix of rookies getting thrust into high-leverage spots — Garrett Cleavinger lost three extra-inning games in an 11-day span. Kenley Jansen has lost two extra-inning games. So has Jimmy Nelson, including Friday night. Blake Treinen lost one, too.
Yes. The loss of Nelson hurts immediately.
I think we all know the odds of this ending well are not good. Gotta break this extra innings slump.
Kenley is due an easy inning. Right?
This is the West.
Refresh, my friend. Refresh.
Let’s go AJ! Staying alive.
Very impressive catch by Lagares.
He got a nice jump on it.
Read it perfectly for a ball that hard hit.
Snakes now up 8-5.
Two-run single by reliever puts Snakes ahead 6-5 in the fourth. He then steals second.
Fletcher fools himself!
Pretty high pitch count for Sandoval (who appears to be no relation to Phlablo).
2 more pitches for him and 2 less for Price and he would have twice as many.
Ohtani is a no-Sho tonight.
I still don’t see why Roberts didn’t PH for Pujols against a righty and Beaty on the bench. He’s supposed to be so into the analytics. Geez, that is analytics 101.
Tomorrow starts an 8 and 0 run of wins. Book it.
OK Danno!!
Gotta catch the Wo-Gnats.
How many times tonight did we fail to bring in a runner from third base with fewer than two outs?
And I used to think of extra innings as “free baseball.” For the Dodgers this year, however, these games are extremely costly.
Also, I just hate the runner starting on second. It instantly puts me in a disgruntled mood.
It’s a gimmick, and I doubt that it has shortened games.
Sure doesn’t feel like it.
It does suck. Should be gone next year. They should not use it in the playoffs this year.
The DH has to go too.
1-12 in extra innings; 13-20 in one-run games. Tonight’s game fits both categories.
I don’t know if the gnats made a deal with the devil or we are just snake-bit, but we can’t seem to close the gap.
Why do we even bother to play extra-inning games?
Wear out our bullpen more?
As soon as Cleavinger came in, I had a very bad feeling.
I had a bad feeling in the 5th inning when Muncy led off wih a double and we didn’t score him.
Hindsight- Brusdar would have been the better choice.
I know. It’s absurd at this point. Remember that season where Kersh couldn’t get out of the fourth without giving up a bunch of runs (I think it was Kersh in the fourth… or was it sixth)? Anyway, feels like that.
I remember something just like that.
Classic 2021 loss. 1 run and extra innings.
You said it.
An unearned run to boot. 2 for 12 RISP, 11 LOB. Not the kind of numbers that win games.
So unbelievably frustrating.
Review that.
Out.
Nope, not close.
Rats!! Might want to get used to the idea of a one game WC playoff game.
Hopefully it won’t go extra innings.
LOL. For sure.
Up to AJ. Can he do it????
Just need a single.
Not dead yet…
Pulse is weak and BP is low.
Sac fly in that spot? Meh.
Almost hit it out, Scoop.
He got himself in an 0-2 hole.
Thanks. I wasn’t watching. But it seems we have a lot of “almosts.”
This was an especially almost almost, but there were several this game.
Oh man. This is tense.
It’s up to CT3. Seager just missed it again.
Number 6.
Deep fly balls that is.
Need a Seager double.
Ugh. Oh Albert.
Why is Beaty not PH against the righty? Geez.
Worst swing all year for Pujols. Wanted it too badly.
It was indeed.
Let’s go Albert. Walk it off.
Clap…Clap
Just don’t hit a ground ball, Albert.
Well there’s a start.
Let’s go Max.
Well, we start the bottom of the 10th with the tying run at the plate.
Graterol seems pleased with himself. Lol
Bah. This looks all too familiar.
Hi Link! I’m not watching. But I’m happy to see you here!
Watching “Washington Week” until it ended. This is so discouraging.
Seems dumb to try that steal play with only one out.
From Maddon, I expected a squeeze with Fletcher at the plate.
That would have been in Maddon’s playbook.
Helpful.
And then gift them a base.
Another boner in a critical situation.
Yep.
Glad I’m reading and not watching.
Bellinger had a better chance.
Muncy should have had it. It was in his glove.
Bellinger was coming in, better angle, could’ve thrown out the runner.
Can’t assume that.
Muncy had no chance to throw out the runner. Easier play coming in on it.
Bellinger air mailed a throw a few days ago. Can’t assume he could have thrown the runner out.
That was a fluke, when Muncy got in his way.
It was Bellinger’s play, but he seemed to shy away with Muncy running fast toward him. Even had Muncy caught it, he would have been out of position to throw the runner out at the plate had the runner tagged….In any event, we’ve seen this kind of defense by the Dodgers far too often, and they gave the batter a hit on the play.
I think you have to score it a hit, but Bellinger’s an elite outfielder who somehow hesitated.
Oh gosh.
I’m not watching until the bottom of the 10th. Too painful.
Marsh looks – marshy.
Hahaha!
The reincarnation of Johnny Damon.
Not nearly as cute. More like ZZ Top.
And now Ohtani is up. Just imagine where we’d be in the standings if we’d won even half these extra inning games?
Or if we had landed Ohtani back in the day?
Yeah – but he wanted to be the DH so I understand.
If NL had the DH back then, I believe the Dodgers would have landed him.
And he’d have landed a ring.
Touche.
Well darn. That didn’t take long.
sigh
Yeah. Exactly.
Fat pitch.
Fat and bad.
Dodgers have given up runs in something like 13 consecutive extra innings.
Make that 14.
14
This feels all too familiar. Extra innings, with a chance to advance on the gnats. So probably we will lose.
Dodgers Extra innings Record
Overall: 1-11
Home: 0-4
Road: 1-7
0-1 vs AZ
0-2 vs CHC
0-1 vs CIN
0-2 vs COL
0-1 vs MIA
0-1 vs MIL
0-1 vs OAK
1-1 vs SD
0-1 vs SFG
Runs scored: 13
Runs allowed: 24
Basically getting out scored 2-1 in extras
(3-1 if you take out the one 5 run inning)
Dodger 10-17 in extra inning games in 1967
(73-89)
Or, what you said.
Unsustainable.
You sure about that?
Sustained.
Warren pitched very well.
How many just hit under fly balls in this game? Four? Five?
And here comes the extra innings.
Ok. Enough foul balls now.
Foul pop ups I should say.
So who pitches the 10th if we can’t score? Victor?
Hate to see Belli miss those middle of the plate strikes.
Someday…
I hope so.
Lost the trade.
Lol
Pffft. After that first foul ball quite a let down.
Whoa. Loud foul there, honey.
Upper deck. Lol
Nuts!
Let’s go for another curtain call here.
Please make sure your Trea is in the upright position for take off!
Clever fellow.
Time for some Trea Turner magic.
YES!
Got him!!
Euchre.
Pleeeease.
One more please.
Kenley! Keep it up!
Let’s do this, Dodgers! Quick top of the 9th followed by a walk off in the bottom of the inning. (Do I hear an echo?)
Snakes beat Pads.
I want to quote Joe Schultz from “Ball Four.”
What me worry?
Ha!
Arghhhh. We are SO bad in these late inning tie games.
The Pads have lost to the Snakes.
Why didn’t AJ go there?
Should have.
C’mon Dills..
Okay Will. Do your thing.
Deja vu all over again.
Well dang. So close, Seager.
Not that close. Not a difficult play.
I mean he got under it. But the crack of the bat was deceptive.
He just missed it.
Set up for Jansen in the 9th now.
Oh goodie.
Kenlo Masochism
Got him!
Tough. Good throw would have had him.
Not sure why Doc didn’t PH Beaty against the righty.
Let’s do this, Dodgers! Quick top of the 8th followed by many runs in the bottom of the inning. (Do I hear an echo?)

That was a strike, but a weird one.
Very bad AB for JT,
Uncharacteristic- unless it’s a tie game in late innings.
Ouch!! LOL
Now why wasn’t that called and infield fly?
Infield fly requires runners on first and second.
Thanks.
Or first, second and third.
Oh Max… this might be a good time to… you know…
Not that.
Time to put this baby to bed. C’mon Cody.
Bellinger leading off in the 7th.
Wow. The wheels are turning.
Imagine a batter getting hit with time being called. If any pitcher could manage it – Joe Kelly is a good bet.
Well, technically that was a strike, but who’s gonna blame the Ump for calling it a ball?
The ump did get a bit distracted. And it’s hard to call it when you are in the dirt. Fortunately he is ok.
Good to get Stassi out.
Mookie’s hip acting up again. Not good. And why isn’t Trea coming in?
TTurner may be coming in for Kelly to lead off the bottom of the 7th..
That makes sense. Thanks.
I hope so.
Let’s do this, Dodgers! Quick top of the 7th followed by many runs in the bottom of the inning.
Not quick, but still hopefully painless.
This game feels like it has extra innings in its future.
This game feels like it has extreme disappointment written all over it.
Zing.
Doesn’t bode well for the home team.
Sad but true.
Heck of an AB.
Dang.
Let’s go Sam.
https://twitter.com/ericstephen/status/1423859773531836417?s=20
Way to go BicKK.
Whatever happened to the pitchout?
It seems to have gone the way of the corded telephone.
When a guy’s running on three straight 1-2 pitches…
That would have been fun to see.
Nice K!
Very good future person!
Come on guys, don’t throw this one away please.
Good grief.
On the biright side, in other league, the Twinkies have beaten the Asterisks for the second straight night.
¡Miércoles de nuevo!
Frustration abounds.
Man – I literally just had a feeling that would happen. Poor Price. Really unfair.
Keep it up, Price!
Oh man! Thought that was fair.
Seager missed an opportunity there.
He did indeed. Muncy woulda been out by a furlong.
How long IS a furlong?
220 yards. A former professor of mine once suggested we should measure time/distance in furlongs per fortinight.
(head explodes)
Alternatively, 40 rods or ten chains.
uh huh…
In the interest of clarification…
Actually I love this stuff. I’m just pulling one of your ten chains.

We’ll see if Albert can avoid the GIDP again.
5 innings and 59 pitches for Price. Does he have one more in him?
Presumably he starts with the pitcher next inning (unless the Dodgers knock him out).
Change up changed into a meatball.
On the bright side, the Pads are on the verge of blowing a 5-0 lead v. the Snakes.
Well phoo.
¡Miércoles en viernes!
Whenever I see Stassi at the plate, it makes think of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3_iLOp6IhM
Price is having quite a game for himself. Loved his grin after that hit.
Been doing my exercise-cook-eat-watch routine. Good game so far!
I think we are going to need some more runs.
There’s one for ya!
I want more.
Patience required.
Thought JT might pop one there but have to wait for more runs.
And a virtue.
Price with the screamer!
Yeeeoow!!!
105 off the bat!
It was a nice looking stroke.
Sweet swing for sure.
The Beerguys have just walked off the Gnats.
Yes! Finally!
Brew Crew win!!
Fletcher fools himself!
Extras in Milwaukee.
Another non-GIDP for Pujols.
I predict Albert will not GIDP.
Good contact from Max.
Going to bottom of the 9th in Wisconsin. Still 1-1.
Maybe hit a HR Mookie so you don’t have to burn around the bases.
Nice start so far by Price.
Bullpen update – https://twitter.com/azfreedman/status/1423836409878573063?s=20
Helpful. Very helpful.
Muncy: 11 Ks in his last 20 ABs.
Definitely in a (mini?) slump.
Pujols with the RBI.
Fails to GIDP.
Was that his goal?
When Uncle Albert hits a grounder to the left side, it’s usually a GIDP.
Good thing GIDP and RBI’s can co-exist.
They cannot. If you GIDP, it is not an RBI.
Wonder if Mookie will be in this game much longer. He looked hurt running going 1st to 3rd.
https://twitter.com/BlakeHarrisTBLA/status/1423833022172864513?s=20
Yep.
Arrrgh.
Good start getting first 2 on. Cash them in now Dodgers.
Price looks like he is really grounded tonight. 3 ground ball outs.
Only ten pitches.
Groundhog Day?
Nice. I was thinking if he is grounded the rest of the team can be electric.
The Giants have tied the Brewers, 1-1, in the 6th and are playing very good baseball. There, I have put it on the tee for you, WBB.
Tee-ball. Lol
The BALCO™ Flaxseed Oil hasn’t quite run out yet. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/00700f1b08e5081c8a90e5680eb2cd881b1da81d86f04f8be8c7aa7d8825f40a.png
First the good news… https://twitter.com/billplunkettocr/status/1423815756102340609?s=20
Oh man. Two bullpen guys gone, one for the rest of the season. Gag.
Nelson had been very effective, too.
Random fact of the day: He went to Niceville High School in Niceville, Florida. The town’s original name was “Boggy.”
Excellent news about Turner No. 2….Nelson’s loss for the season will hurt. Gonzalez’s not as much, but sorry to see either of them on the IL.
Beerguys have taken an early lead over the Gnats, and have one of their best pitchers going.
