Astros at Dodgers, 6:30 PM PDT, TV: ATT SportsNet SW, SPNLA
RHP Jake Odorizzi (4-5, 4.30 ERA) pitches for the visiting Astros and RHP Max Scherzer (8-4, 2.76 ERA) makes his debut for the home Dodgers.
Today in Dodgers’ history:
- 1908 In Brooklyn, the last-place Cardinals blank the Brooklyn Superbas (Dodgers), 3-0. The entire Washington Park contest is played with just one ball.
- 1941 Mickey Owens becomes the first catcher to handle three foul pop ups in one frame. The Brooklyn backstop’s third inning defense contributes to the Dodgers’ 11-6 victory over New York at Ebbets Field.
- 1942 In a military relief game at the Polo Grounds, which will be the last war-time twilight game played, Pee Wee Reese’s grand slam in the top of the ninth, which puts the Dodgers up 5-1, doesn’t count, because of the 9:10 pm government curfew. The game ends up as a 1-1 tie with the Giants.
- 1948 Ernie Harwell, filling in for Red Barber, who is recovering from a bleeding ulcer, calls his first major league game as the Dodgers beat the Cubs at Ebbets Field, 5-4. To obtain the future Hall of Fame broadcaster, Brooklyn general manager Branch Rickey trades minor league catcher Cliff Draper to the Atlanta Crackers.

My goodness. Scherzer has a very prominent nose, doesn’t he?
NPUT
Interesting litttle tid bit I came accross.
When Austin Barnes catches Kenley Jansen:
15.1IP, 0ER, 0.00 ERA, 0 XB, 2SB, 6BB, 19K, (3.17 K/BB), .082BA
When Will Smith catches Kenley Jansen:
25IP, 13ER/15R, 4.88ERA, 21H, 7XB, 7SB, 23BB, 29K (1.26 K/BB), .235BA
Perhaps Doc should bring in Barnes when he brings in Jansen.
Opponents are hitting .820 when Barnes catches Kenley?
He put the decimal point in the wrong spot. It should be .082.

Thanks. Fixed it.
The Giants scored 4 in the 9th today to tie and one in the 10th to beat the Diamondbacks, 5-4.
of course they did https://media4.giphy.com/media/kSxTqT5Qvxp60/giphy.gif
Correction: the Snakes gave up four in the ninth and then one in the tenth to blow what should have an easy victory.
I wonder what the Gnats paid Lovullo to use his worst reliever in the ninth.
Diamondbacks lead the Giants, 2-0, after two innings on Thursday afternoon.
Another part of the Dodger story this year – give up lots of late runs to turn laughers into nail bitters – if not losses.
Do those Angosturas come overland or by air?
I’d like another run. Or two.
I don’t know if I understand why they have Mookie at 2nd and CT3 in the outfield.
Mookie’s hip issues.
Less running at 2nd? But what about jumping over runners to turn DP’s?
I presume in consultation with the medical staff.
This team is a bit manic. The problem is the lows come around far too often for my liking. But tonight – life is good and they look unbeatable!
They are a bipolar bunch. They must have had their Lithium tonight.
That was an AJ at-bat!
Euchre!!
Un-AJ-like at bat.
As I was only able to watch one of these two games, glad it’s this one.
Same here.
27 pitches. Still one out.
Yahtzee!!
This makes me laugh.
Ha! Altuve off the bag!
Good pitch to get JT out there.
Woot! Mooookie!
Huh. Last I knew it was 7-2 in the 7th. How come the Dodgers gave up three more runs?

It wasn’t a laugher, but there were some laughs.
Woo-HOO!!!!!
Dodgers win!
Ballgame!!
Treinen almost deserves a save oppo.
Kenley you HAVE to get this out my friend.
I am tired of the Kenley show. It should be canceled next season.
Might be on at a different time (inning) at least.
Yep. Move him to a easier time slot.
Could also be on a different channel (team) possibly.
I really don’t think the Dodgers will bring him back. He still thinks he’s a top drawer closer and will want alot of money.
I think he’d be fine in the bullpen. 7th or even 8th inning.
Alright Kenley. That’s more like it.
On the same pitch that was called a ball.
Kenley robbed there.
Indeed he was.
Ball 2 appeared on gameday as right over the plate
Ball 2 apeared on gameday as right over the plate
And so it was in real life as well.
Only because it was.
Kenley got robbed there!
Jansen seems to struggle in non-save opportunities as I recall.
I would hazard to guess that it might be an issue generally for closers. First, being used in a non-save situation suggests that a closer has probably not been used in awhile, so rust issue. Secondly, closer probably isn’t bringing the normal intensity with them to the mound. Third, and relatedly, they may see it as an opportunity to work on pitches, sequences or delivery that they might not normally throw in a tighter situation.
alright, that’s enough
I thought Treinen was warmed up!
Trea Turner would’ve made that play.
This is why I said phew before, and why I was worried.
Seager has limited range, Turner great range.
Get somebody up in the bullpen Doc.
Finish it off Kenley. Even though it’s not a save opportunity.
He needs to clean the rust off, though.
C’mon Kenley. No drama.
Matón in Argentine Spanish means “bully.”
One of these days we are going to win a game and the gnats are going to lose theirs.
Serious question as to when that most recently happened. Maybe not as long ago as I recall but it feels like For.Ev.Er!
Answering my own question. July 28th when they beat San Fran 8-0. Before then, when they weren’t facing each other – July 24th.

Phew.
3 more outs.
Why Kenley and not Treinen?
Not that close.
Kelly was sweating though.
Hate that it was Correa who won that battle against Kelly. I can’t stand him.
Correa is a schmuck.
I knew it. Home run because the fan stole the out from Cody.
I think Cody would have caught that foul ball in the stands. Doc not happy.
Yep. Bad break.
Not interference, but very bad judgment.
If Belli had caught it, he would’ve flipped it to a fan.
4K Altuve!
So good.
Couldn’t happen to a more deserving player.
San Fran up 4-1and threatening to score more in the 7th.
Bullpen has blown it. Bigtime now.
Yep. Bigger lead than the Dodgers current if have.
Snakes chose to use their worst reliever.
Dumb.
I don’t think they have any good ones.
True.
7-1. Sigh.
Gnats scored another. 4-1.
Didn’t refresh fast enough!
Caught a break. He was out. Way to hustle Seegs.
Now bring on Trea Turner!
Curtain call to boot!
Thankfully kept him from the Gnats or Padres.
Whiff.
Huge smiles in the dugout. What a debut!
Yeah!!!!!!
One more, Max! You can do it!
Clap…Clap
Do you think Max knows about the jumbo jacks?
Oh he will.
There’s a word for that in Spanish – vomitivo.
Got him!
Of course San Fran is winning tonight.
The Snakes have something going, though.
Only got one.
They’ll have to go to work on the Gnatpen.
Should be soon.
C’mon Chris, join the hit parade.
He had a hit earlier.
What have you done for me lately though?
What have you done for me lately though?
Current hit parade. Geez.
Double double is really no struggle
Seager hits and Smith is trouble
SEEEGS!!
Seegs double!
Let’s go Corey, clap clap clapclapclap!
I think Max is officially welcome here
Max with the K!
Before the trade saying Max with the k was always a bad thing. Now context matters.
Muncie has cooled off somewhat. He hasn’t homered in a while.
We’re not in Indiana any more, Toto.
It was a bad inning in general. Houston scored and LA didn’t.
I blame old friend Yimi
Let’s go for number 3 Mookie!
Why throw home CT3?
he was robbed on ball 4
now all we need is a scherzer HR to top it off
Cody double! Pinch me!
he must now know he’s not pitching well
LOL. If Cody finally breaks out this team could be frightening.
AJ!!!!!
MOOK!!
Where is everyone tonight? Missing all the fireworks!
I was at my son’s flag football games. 3 games in one night is too much football! But at least they went 2-1.
Hi! I’m back from cooking dinner.
What was on the menu tonight?
We did a bunch of personal naan crust pizzas.
Sweet sweet swing.
Moooooookie!!!!!!!!!
Good start.
Will Smith!!!!!!!!
Yes! Safe, baby!
Max is safe, pretty sure.
Ka-Boom! MOOK
Ka-Boom! MOOK
I can’t get my spectrum game to boot up…
Apparently it’s working on the phone app.
I will try that. Thanks!
iPad delivers.
Jimmy Nelson, who’s been very effective, has been IL’d with elbow inflammation. Dodgers have signed Cole Hamels as a free agent, but he won’t be ready for a while.

Thoughts on Hamels? I’m not sure how I feel on this one – 50/50
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.
A Tale of the 2021 Dodgers.
