Game 87, 2021

Dodgers at Marlins, 4:10 PM PDT, TV: Bally Sports Florida, ESPN (out-of-market only), SPNLA

It’s a bullpen game for the Dodgers and RHP Jake Reed (0-0, 13.50 ERA) will start it. The Marlins counter with LHP Ross Detwiler (1-0, 3.23 ERA).

Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1953 The Dodgers set a major league mark for the most consecutive games with a home run by a team with at least one round-tripper in their 24 contests. Brooklyn starter Preacher Roe hits the record-breaking homer with a third-inning blast in the team’s 9-5 victory over Pittsburgh at Forbes Field. (Note: this record has been broken by seven teams since then, most recently in 2019 by the NY Yankees, who did it in 31 straight games ending July 1)
  • 1998 Jeff Shaw becomes the first player to participate in an All-Star Game wearing a uniform for a team he hasn’t yet played for when he works an inning, allowing three hits and a run pitching for the National League squad before appearing in a regular season game for the Dodgers. The 32 year-old closer, who posted a 1.81 ERA along with 23 saves in the first half of the season for the Reds, was traded three days ago by Cincinnati to Los Angeles for Paul Konerko and Dennys Reyes.
  • 2004 Kazuhisa Ishii tosses a one-hitter in the Dodgers’ 11-0 defeat of Arizona. The 30 year-old Japanese southpaw retires the first 12 batters he faces before issuing a leadoff walk to Luis Gonzalez, which is followed with a single by Shea Hillenbrand, but then the left-hander proceeds to mow down 15 consecutive D-Backs to finish his masterpiece.

  1. The Dodgers seem to strike out a lot, but they are eighth in the NL in strikeouts, right in the middle of the pack.

    • Strike outs are way up all over. Its not the game some of us oldsters grew up with.

      • They do demonstrate considerable patience at the plate, starting with Muncy, who leads the NL in walks. He also is a rare bird in that he has more bases on balls than Ks, 58-56.

    • And we need a good, long outing from Urias today. If this game turns into a rout, look for position players to start pitching for the Dodgers.

  2. One thing about this team. When the Dodgers are going bad, it is a Grand Funk (no Railroad).

  3. Good news to wake up to. I think this year the all star break is coming at just the right time

  4. Back to the future a 6-2 road trip would have been the dream, so 5-3 disappointing but…

  5. Urias really settled down nicely. Hope he figures out his 1st inning woes.

  6. Very nice of the Dodgers to give me 1 for the road . . . 2 . . . 3 . . . 4 . . . 5. It should make the drive more pleasant. I will listen to the rest of the game on SiriusXM.

  7. Julito needs to retake the lead as the Dodgers best hitting pitcher. Was at OPS+43 coming into the game, but Gonsolin in his short time back is at 125!

  8. Well, I am off to L.A. shortly, a 6 1/2-hour drive, to visit some old friends and take in Sunday’s game vs. Arizona. Perhaps we will be in first place at the conclusion of that contest.

    • Buen viaje! Still tired from taking in the 4 game series in DC, el Sweepo (better times)!

      • I hope that the Dodgers can match your sweep in DC, although this will be a three-game series, compared to your four.

      • I will take 101, which takes more time than the 5, but is more scenic. It reminds me of California while I was growing up. I used to drive it a lot when I went to school at Cal. Not sure if I will stop at Andersen’s Pea Soup in Buellton, which used to be a favorite of my late parents. The 1 along the coast is the best route, particularly this time of year, but I want to get to L.A. before it gets too late.

        • Always preferred Route 1, when hitching as a teenager, if only to avoid being stuck on some on-ramp in the middle of nowhere along the faster routes, but also the scenery and the possibilities for rolling out the sleeping bag along the way.

          • We are not looking forward to Sunday’s predicted high of 104° in Paso.

        • We’re driving down 101 to Paso Robles on Sunday, spending a few days there and in SLO, then up Hwy 1 to Monterey and Santa Cruz before returning home to Oakland.

  9. Good morning, fellow Dodgers folks! Last night was a good one for me to miss. I got a chuckle out of reading the thread this morning – everyone slowly getting testier and testier. I would NOT have helped that trend! So here we are, one top pitcher hurt, another (hopefully permanently ) banishèd, runners stealing willy-nilly against us, catchers interfering, outfielders booting balls, umpires blowing calls and batters whiffing. Baseball I love you, even when I hate you! Watching frustrating baseball is SO much better than no baseball at all.

  10. The Dodgers had 16 total bases in the third inning tonight. That is more than they had in the entire game Monday (9) or Tuesday (11).

  11. How many times this season have you seen Pollock strike out on that pitch, or on a reasonable facsimile?

  12. Ohtani has hit his 32nd home run today in Anaheim. The Angels are leading, 4-3, in the 7th.

  13. Here’s an option at OKC. Darien Nunez has pitched in 20 games, all in relief. He is 5-0 with an ERA of 2.79, 39 Ks in 29 innings, and a WHIP of 1.000.

      • That’s what I think. Here’s another option at OKC. Kevin Quackenbush, former big leaguer, has pitched in 20 games, all in relief, and has 11 saves. He has not allowed an earned run in 20.2 innings and has struck out 22. White and Uceta go back and forth. Why not give someone else a shot?

  14. Same as the last two nights. Poor defense and lack of clutch hitting. Another 13 strike outs tonight.

  15. Doc doesn’t seem to realize, despite repeated examples, that Kenley is not the same pitcher in a non-save situation or with runner(s) on base as he is in a save situation with the bases empty. Will Doc ever realize that?

        • I didn’t say he was the dimmest either. Hell, even you could succeed with the teams he has been given.

          • Any on the field decision can be disputed. Managing 25 massive egos is something else entirely.

          • Over the course of a season, yes, but tonight’s loss was not about managing egos.

          • Tonight’s loss was about many things, you are looking at bullpen usage, which goes beyond one game. The pen over the past few weeks has been a bright spot and Doc’s management of such doesn’t seem to be part of the problem. He is now dealing with having only three starters. Give him a break.

      • Alexander, Cleavinger, Treinen or Nelson could have been tried for two-thirds of an inning.

        • They all had multiple outings in previous several days. Kenley hadn’t pitched in a week.

    • Actually the best on the staff in terms of inherited runner scoring at only 8%.

        • Kenley is known not to have the same intensity when he comes in with the Dodgers up by more than 3 runs, what is typically known as a non-save situation. How you apply that to a tie game is beyond me.

  16. That’s Barnes’ third catcher’s interference on this road trip. That is incredibly bad.

  17. I was listening to the game on SiriusXM. It was the Marlins’ announcers. One is good, one not. Regarding Lux, I know we have very few options, possibly none until Seager returns. My feeling is that if you can’t hit, you have to be able to field. If you can’t field, you have to be able to hit. But, if you can’t do either, which is overall what we are seeing lately from Lux, it is time to say, OK C you later and pick up a journeyman infielder somewhere. He boots the first ball hit to him tonight and he has struck out in both his bats. And he failed to field a ball in the 6th inning last night that was a ruled a hit when it could have been ruled an error. That allowed the Marlins to score their first run.

    • Yep. Lux ain’t cutting it. I have serious doubts that he will live up to all of his prospect hype.

      • To WBB: So, overall, are you saying you’d rather have him than Seager? I am not saying to give up on him. I am saying he may need more seasoning at AAA.
To OhioDodger: I share you doubts.

    • Much too early to give up on Lux. Even while his offense has been dubious, he’s far superior to Seager on defense. When Seager returns, though, he should be an occasional starter and bench piece.

  18. I have my writers group in a little while. Sigh. Not looking too sharp so far. I shall peek in now and then but short of an offensive explosion I’m not holding out too much hope.

  19. DeGrom not going to All Star game. Perhaps Bueler will be named as his replacement.

  20. Pujols is batting second tonight. That made me curious, so I looked it up. In his prior 2922 big league games he never was in the starting lineup as the No. 2 hitter.

  21. It took nine years for Jake Reed to reach the majors. Now he will appear on back-to-back days. I hope that he doesn’t complain that he is being overworked as a big leaguer.
