Game 65, 2021

Rangers at Dodgers, 1:10 PM PDT, TV: Bally Sports Southwest, MLBN (out-of-market only), SPNLA

The Rangers send RHP Dane Dunning (2-4, 4.26 ERA) to the hill to face the Dodgers’ RHP Walker Buehler (5-0, 2.56 ERA). Dunning is a rookie who has made four scoreless starts. Buehler hasn’t lost in his last 21 starts.

Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1957 In a game which features the ejection of Johnny Logan and Don Drysdale, Clem Labine loses for the first time in ten months and 38 relief appearances when the Braves beat Brooklyn, 8-5. The Milwaukee shortstop charged the mound after getting drilled in the ribs by the Dodger right-hander, resulting in banishment for both players.
  • 1973 The Dodgers infield, a quartet which will be together eight and a half years, setting a major league record for longevity, plays together for the first time. First baseman Steve Garvey, second baseman Davey Lopes, third baseman Ron Cey, and shortstop Bill Russell are in the lineup in the 16-3 defeat to the Phillies.
  • 1998 The first triple play ever completed at Dodger Stadium is turned by Darren Dreifort (p), Eric Young (2b), Jose Vizcaino (ss), and Bobby Bonilla (3b). With Colorado runners on first and second base, the 1-6-4 double play becomes a triple killing when Jamey Wright is thrown out at third base by the LA second baseman, who covered first base for the second out.
  • 2010 The Angels, with their first sweep at Dodger Stadium, complete their 14-game road trip with 11 victories, the most for the team on a single trip since 1962. In the 6-5 decision over their crosstown rivals, Halo hurler Jered Weaver strikes out his older brother, Jeff, who came into the game as a long reliever in the third inning, for the first time since they were kids.

  1. RIP my first husband, Ned
Beatty. We were married from 1979-1998. (I was very young, wife #3, and sure we would make it. But not bad, by Hollywood standards.) So many memories… I spent the day today with kids and grandkids, his other prolific legacy.

  2. All three of the Dodgers-Phillies games — Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights — are on MLBTV, unless you are blacked out.

  3. Three righties scheduled to go for the Phils. Gonsolin, Urias, and Kersh for the good guys.

  4. Giants go home to open a four-game series with Arizona, which has lost 19 in a row on the road.

  5. Save number 327 for Jansen. He passes Roberto Hernandez and is now tied with Fernando Rodney for 17th all time.

  6. Wow. Where would we be right now without Taylor. He is my MVP to this point.

  7. Ranger catcher smiles at his dugout over Joe West’s strike zone for Pujols.

  8. Bad situational hitting and worse base-running (Lux shoulda had a double on that popup).

  9. Giants drop to 6-5 in June with their loss. Padres improved to 4-8 this month with their win. The Dodgers are 6-4 in June.

    • Thanks. I didn’t know what that meant so I looked it up: acronym for Thrown Out On The Basepaths Like A Nincompoop. Great term.

  10. Padres beat the Mets, 7-3. Tatis hit a grand slam in the 7th, followed immediately by a HR by Machado.

    • Ball was hit very hard, almost got through. Doubt anybody would’ve beaten that one out.

      • You are not incorrect, but he wasn’t even in the picture when the throw came to first

  11. When the Rangers’ starter goes grocery shopping, is there a Dunning Kroger effect?

  12. The Nats just blanked the Glants, 5-0. In their four-game series in D.C., the Giants scored a total of three runs — two of them in extra innings — yet won two of the games. Washington scored eight runs in the series.

    • Clearly, the Gnats are regressing to the mean. But for the ghost runner in extra innings, they probably wouldn’t have scored at all after the Poseur’s homer on Friday.

      • I was taken aback by how weak their lineup was for the second game. Their “B” team highlights how they aren’t built for sustained success over 162 games. The Dodgers have thrown out some relatively weak lineups, but those were usually due to injuries and was mostly in the bottom 3-4.
