Game 61, 2021

Dodgers at Pirates, 4:05 PM PDT, TV: ATT SportsNetATT-PIT, SPNLA

The Dodgers send RHP Tony Gonsolin (0-0, 0.00 ERA) out to make his first start of the year after a two-month stay on the IL with a shoulder injury. He’ll face LHP Tyler Anderson (3-5, 4.67 ERA).

Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1919 Dodger standout pitcher Rube Marquard breaks his leg running the bases, ending his season with a record of 3-3. The hard-throwing southpaw will finish his 18-year Hall of Fame career in 1925, after compiling a 201-177 record along with an ERA of 3.08.
  • 1973 Rightfielder Rusty Staub becomes the pivot man in a very unusual double play during a 4-2 Mets victory against the Dodgers at Shea Stadium. Racing in from the outfield, ‘Le Grand Orange’ gets a throw near second base from first baseman John Milner and tags Davey Lopes, who was picked-off from first, and then throws home to nail Tom Paciorek trying to score from second during the P-1B-SS-1B-2B-1B-2B-RF-C rundown.
  • 1990 Eddie Murray ties Mickey Mantle’s major league mark, hitting a homer from both sides of the plate for the tenth time in his career. The switch-hitting first baseman’s second home run of the game, batting left-handed against Eric Show, proves to be the eventual winning run in the Dodgers’ 5-4 victory over San Diego in the 11th inning at Jack Murphy Stadium.

  1. Feels like it should be the bottom of the 9th already. Are we sure they didn’t add in extra inning at some point but just forgot to tally it up?

    • I know it technically wasn’t but tonight was basically a bullpen game. They always seem longer to me somehow. All the pitching changes in a game where only 1 run has scored so far.

      • And now to cap the feeling it should be the ninth – here comes Jansen.

  2. Gnats have lost – blowing ninth- and tenth-inning leads – and Pads have also lost, so Dodgers are now in second place by percentage points, pending outcome of tonight’s game.

Tomorrow in DC, the Gnats have to face Scherzer. Pads have a travel day en route to deGrom.

    • Latest has rain starting at 3pm local time 40% chance, so at least the thing is likely to start.

  3. Save number 326 for Jansen. He is now tied with Roberto Hernandez for 18th all time. And he makes it onto the 3 row of pictures on BR’s career save leaders page!

  4. Lux really struggling. Especially against lefties. Hasn’t done squat in a week.

  5. A rare Joe Davis error: “Heading to bottom of 2nd and no score.”

  6. Link – I assume you will set the coffee up tonight so you are primed and ready for tomorrow’s game?

  7. Here’s hoping that the Pirates are soft landing spot for Gonsolin’s return.

  8. Hopefully today is moving day for the Dodgers: Moving from third to second (on their way back to first).

    • Dodgers have already moved into second (or the Pads have moved into third, if you prefer), but they must win tonight to remain there.
