Dodgers at Pirates, 4:05 PM PDT, TV: ATT SportsNetATT-PIT, SPNLA
The Dodgers send RHP Tony Gonsolin (0-0, 0.00 ERA) out to make his first start of the year after a two-month stay on the IL with a shoulder injury. He’ll face LHP Tyler Anderson (3-5, 4.67 ERA).
Today in Dodgers’ history:
- 1919 Dodger standout pitcher Rube Marquard breaks his leg running the bases, ending his season with a record of 3-3. The hard-throwing southpaw will finish his 18-year Hall of Fame career in 1925, after compiling a 201-177 record along with an ERA of 3.08.
- 1973 Rightfielder Rusty Staub becomes the pivot man in a very unusual double play during a 4-2 Mets victory against the Dodgers at Shea Stadium. Racing in from the outfield, ‘Le Grand Orange’ gets a throw near second base from first baseman John Milner and tags Davey Lopes, who was picked-off from first, and then throws home to nail Tom Paciorek trying to score from second during the P-1B-SS-1B-2B-1B-2B-RF-C rundown.
- 1990 Eddie Murray ties Mickey Mantle’s major league mark, hitting a homer from both sides of the plate for the tenth time in his career. The switch-hitting first baseman’s second home run of the game, batting left-handed against Eric Show, proves to be the eventual winning run in the Dodgers’ 5-4 victory over San Diego in the 11th inning at Jack Murphy Stadium.

Feels like it should be the bottom of the 9th already. Are we sure they didn’t add in extra inning at some point but just forgot to tally it up?
Had the same feeling. Seeing Victor so early may have thrown me off.
I know it technically wasn’t but tonight was basically a bullpen game. They always seem longer to me somehow. All the pitching changes in a game where only 1 run has scored so far.
And now to cap the feeling it should be the ninth – here comes Jansen.
Gnats have lost – blowing ninth- and tenth-inning leads – and Pads have also lost, so Dodgers are now in second place by percentage points, pending outcome of tonight’s game.
Tomorrow in DC, the Gnats have to face Scherzer. Pads have a travel day en route to deGrom.
I expect to see that Kenley catch on some highlight reels.
It was self-defense.
Rain forecast for tomorrow.
Starting around noon. We might squeak through.
Latest has rain starting at 3pm local time 40% chance, so at least the thing is likely to start.

Save number 326 for Jansen. He is now tied with Roberto Hernandez for 18th all time. And he makes it onto the 3 row of pictures on BR’s career save leaders page!
What a spear by KJ!!!
The worst thing coulda been that Kenley deflected it.
Chilling thought.
Woo-HOO!!!!
Phew!
Yippee, second place.
Dodgers win!
Another heartbreaking call by the ump.
That’s a strike on Mookie.
Every time.
Gotta get Willie Mays Hayes
Won’t be easy.
Not the way they did yesterday, ideally.
Probably their most talented player.
Strong mind Kenley.
Strong mitt!
DP time please.
Kenley’s not a DP kinda guy.
A girl can hope.
Argh.
Crap!!
Rats.
Bad future person.
Trying to soften the blow, that’s all.
My guess is you are a good person both now – and in the future!
Filthy breaking ball.
Nasty.
JT time?
Nice take, CT3!
Almost, Max. Almost.
Some insurance runs would sure be nice.
Ok Dodgers. Please score 4 runs and close this one out in style.
You don’t want a one run game?
Oh wow. I wasn’t even thinking about that! Great point.
Also – I do now!
Ay-yi-yi.
Lux was lazy on that one, but he should still be out.
Seemed out.
And so he was.
And replay shows such
Lux is a mess.
Belli 28 game streak is in grave danger.
Maybe the Dodgers will bat around in the 9th? (Wouldn’t that be nice…)
Belli is a mess.
CT3 is really something
RBIs’ best friend.
Wow!
That was a perfect time to pinch hit Muncy for Pujols.
Well – he is at first now. 😉
Doc is not the sharpest knife in the drawer..
Probably the best manager in the game.
I don’t see very many other guys for any length of time, but he is pretty good at his job
That’s what I would have done.
But can understand why he didn’t do it.
Pujols almost beat that out. Oh wait – no not really! 🙂
2 out rally time?
Even Nomar noticing the uneven calls by the ump.
Yes!
Fine future person!
You’re welcome!
Go Joe go!
Dang. Walked him with one ball.
The strike zone is increasingly arbitrary.
Three pitches he was calling strikes with the other pitcher.
Yep. Anderson was getting all the close ones.
Too bad. Lux got under that one.
Ouch. Hate to see that.
Mookie just aint barreling up fat pitches these days.
He’s gotta swing at everything because they’re all called strikes.
But not for Price.
Well, he’s not pitching to Mookie.
He hit that one hard. At least!
Ump! Be fair!
Hopefully Price can give us 4 innings tonight. At least 3.
Not at the plate. 😉
Ump not giving Price that high strike.
We’re not getting the calls Anderson is for sure. Total crap.
Lux really struggling. Especially against lefties. Hasn’t done squat in a week.
Sure hope Belli figures it out soon.
Same single. Same
pop up out.
Pujols is hitting like it is 2015 and he is a spry 35 year old!
I get the feeling he really likes being a Dodger!
Yup!
Turner two!
Holy Cow!!
JT!!!
JT SHOW!
Mookie can’t catch a break. Two balls called strikes in that AB.
One of them in his eyes.
Mookie appears to have the widest (and highest) strike zone in baseball.
Never in doubt…
Double Whew!!
The high wire act continues…
No bueno. Bases loaded by him with two out.
One more?
Nope. He is done.
Good Grief.
Ok. THIS could be his last batter.
It better be.
Go Goose Go.
This should be Gonsolin’s last hitter.
Yep needs to get him.
Making me nervous.
I fear Doc will stick with him.
Would be unusual
He gets ideas in his head. Like 75 pitches no matter what.
Confident about his offense, I guess.
That would be my thought as well.
He’s got no command whatsoever.
Either way.
Gonsolin has twice as many K’s as Buehler did last night.
A rare Joe Davis error: “Heading to bottom of 2nd and no score.”
Vin made occasional errors in his later years.
I imagine it would be hard speaking that volume of words and not having your mouth run ahead of your mind every once in a while.
Vin usually knew when to shut up, as on Gibson’s HR.
So true!
Whew!!
Doubt that we see the Goose for the meat of their order again.
Got him!
Whoa. That was a scary foul ball.
C’mon Tony. This guy is a .149 hitter.
Letting the weak hitters get away with stuff.
Meh throw, worse positioning by Smith.
E3 also.
Doubt that.
Your de facto official scorer has ruled.
Prime Pujols probably putout.
The throw was there.
Link – I assume you will set the coffee up tonight so you are primed and ready for tomorrow’s game?
Is it an early damned game? Wait. 6:35 am my time? Sheesh!
Well – it’s still going to be morning for me when it starts so…
Just wait til you get your peepers on the start time for the July 4th game vs Washington…
New Post for tomorrow’s game is ready and scheduled for 5:00.
It’s a free game on YouTube only, 9:35 a.m. PST.
Here’s hoping that the Pirates are soft landing spot for Gonsolin’s return.
I still wouldn’t expect him to go too deep into the game.
5 innings, 75 pitches. Those are the limits, I think.
Sounds about right.
Or… one?
But still 75 pitches.
Fair enough. I’d be fine with 4 solid. 5 would be wonderful.
Tony pitching well so far but Frazier is hitting everything.
Turner back man!
Joe Davis: JT owns this guy.
JT: HR.
JT!!!
Meanwhile, in the Midwest, https://twitter.com/jokeylocomotive/status/1402774929871753216?s=20
Imagine having Story and Pages on the same team…
Except that Pagés is a Spanish surname, pronounced “Pah-HESS.”
Game number reminds me of what a great movie 61 is.
Is it? Haven’t seen it.
It’s actually 61*. Barry Pepper is a fine actor.
Just ordered a used DVD.
Umpire jobbing Mookie early tonight.
Game on.
Hopefully today is moving day for the Dodgers: Moving from third to second (on their way back to first).
Door is wide open. Thank you Cubbies.
Dodgers have already moved into second (or the Pads have moved into third, if you prefer), but they must win tonight to remain there.
8:15 start at this point.
Thanks.
